  • This investigation highlights rationale of electrically conductive nano adhesives for its essential application for Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding in satellites and Lightning Strike Protection in aircrafts. Carbon Nano Fibres (CNF) were functionalized by electroless process using Tollen's reagent and by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) process by depositing silver on CNF. Different weight percentage of CNF and silver coated CNF were reinforced into the epoxy resin hardener system. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs clearly show the presence of CNF in the epoxy matrix, thus giving enough evidence to show that dispersion is uniform. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) studies reveal that there is uniform deposition of silver on CNF resulting in significant improvement in interfacial adhesion with epoxy matrix. There is a considerable increase in thermal stability of the conductive nano adhesive demonstrated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Four probe conductivity meters clearly shows a substantial increase in the electrical conductivity of silver coated CNF-epoxy composite compared to non-coated CNF-epoxy composite. Tensile test results clearly show that there is a significant increase in the tensile strength of silver coated CNF-composites compared to non-coated CNF-epoxy composites. Consequently, this technology is highly desirable for satellites and EMI Shielding and will open a new dimension in space research.

  • Blends of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared by the coprecipitation from a common solvent. The blends were processed through a capillary die at $287^{\circ}C$ to produce a monofilament. Morphology and mechanical, thermal properties of blends and composites were examined by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), tensile test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Crystallization kinetics of the blends were investigated by the isothermal DSC method. The Avrami analyses were applied to obtain the information on the crystal growth geometry and factors controlling the rate of crystallization. In the blends, liquid crystalline phase did not reveal any significant macrophase separation and thermal degradation at the processing temperature. From scanning electron micrographs of cryogenic fracture surfaces of extruded fibers, the TLCP domains were found to be more or less finely dispersed with $0.1{\mu}m$ to $0.2{\mu}m$ in size. Interfacial adhesion between the TLCP and matrix polymer was excellent. Tensile strength and modulus of TLCP/PET in-situ fiber composites were enhanced with increasing draw ratio and LCP content.

  • In order to substitute and recycle the existing automobile parts for GMT-sheet, researches on the effects of GMT-sheet on the establishment of precise joining strength, joining condition that are lap length of joining part, compression ratio, and closure speed must be carried out but until now. Besides, many researches on adhesion joint had been conducted until now but no systematic research on press lap joint of GMT-sheet has been implemented until recently and the reliability of joining strength is not yet established. In press lap joining molding of GMT-sheet, tensile stress and lap joining connection efficiency was increased according to the increase of lap length L. However, as the increase of compression ratio and fiber content ratio per unit area was higher in tensile test, it has caused the deterioration of lap joining efficiency after joining molding of GMT-sheet. Clarify joining strength and lap joining efficiency during high temperature compression press lap joining molding of GMT-sheet and research data regarding to the lap length of joining part was presented. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the substitution of existing products as well as usage development in non-automobile field and also to find out precise dynamic characteristics as designing data of structures.

  • Interfacial evaluation of glass fiber reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy nanocomposite was investigated by micromechanical technique in combination with wettability test. The contact resistance of the CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was measured using a gradient specimen, containing electrical contacts with gradually-increasing spacing. The contact resistance of CNT-epoxy nanocomposites was evaluated by using the two-point method rather than the four-point method. Due to the presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was about $120^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. For surface treated-glass fibers, the tensile strength decreased dramatically, whereas the tensile modulus exhibited little change despite the presence of flaws on the etched fiber surface. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the etched glass fiber and the CNT-epoxy nanocomposites increased due to the enhanced surface energy and roughness. As the thermodynamic work of adhesion, $W_a$ increased, both the mechanical IFSS and the apparent modulus increased, which indicated the consistency with each other.

  • Woven sisal textile reinforced composites were manufactured to evaluate fracture toughness, and tensile test. All specimens were immersed in water five times. All specimens are immersed in pure water during 9 days at room temperature, and dried in 1 day at $50^{\circ}C$. Two kinds of polymer matrices such as epoxy and vinyl-ester were used. Fractured surface were investigated to study the failure mechanism and fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. It is shows that it can be enhanced to improve their mechanical performance to reveal the relationship between fracture toughness and water absorption fatigue according to different polymer matrices. Water uptake of the epoxy composites was found to increase with cycle times. Mechanical properties are dramatically affected by the water absorption cycles. Water-absorbed samples observed poor mechanical properties such as lower values of maximum strength and extreme elongation. The $K_{IC}$ values demonstrate a decrease in inclination with increasing cyclic times of wetting and drying fur the epoxy and vinyl-ester.

  • A novel electrospun nanofiber membrane was fabricated using combined poly (vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) intended for bone tissue engineering applications. PVPA is a proton-conducting polymer used as primer for bone implants and dental cements to prevent corrosion and brush abrasion. The phosphonate groups of PVPA have the ability to crosslink and attach itself to the hydroxyapatite surface facilitating faster integration of the biomaterial to the bone matrix. PVA was combined with PVPA to provide hydrophilicity, biocompatibility and improve its spinnability. To improve its mechanical strength, PVPA/PVA and neat PVA mixtures were combined to produce a multilayer scaffold. The physical and chemical properties of the of the fabricated matrix was investigated by SEM and TEM morphological analyses, tensile strength test, XRD, FT-IR spectra, swelling behavior and biodegradation rates, porosity and contact angle measurements. Biocompatibility was also examined in vitro by cytotoxicity and cell proliferation studies with MTT assay and cell adhesion behavior by SEM and confocal microscopy.

  • This paper presents the analysis result of load-transfer mechanism and pile movements associated with the development of frictional resistance to understand the engineering characteristics of micropile behavior. An field load tests were performed for two different types of micropiles and they are (i) thread bar reinforcement with D=50mm and (ii) hollow steel pipe reinforcement with $D_{out}$=82.5mm and $D_{in}$=60.5mm and wrapped with woven geotextile for post-grouting. The load test results indicated that micropiling with pressured grouting provided better load-transfer characteristics than micropiling with gravity grouting under both compressive and tensile loading conditions in that unit skin frictional resistance is well distributed along installation depth. The unit weight and unconfined compressive strength of cured grout were obtained for each piling method. The strength and unit weight of micropile with pressured grouting was higher than those with gravity grouting. The fact that load bearing quality with pressured grouting is better than that of gravity grouting could be attributed to the dense mutual adhesion between surrounding ground and pile due to pressurized grouting method and better grout quality.

  • In this study, the effect of the reinforcement on the wear behaviour and mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was investigated. The Gas atomized hypereutectic Al-20Si alloy powders were mixed with 1, 3, and 5 wt.% AlN and TiC ceramic particles and consolidated by hotpress. The Al-20Si powder has both finely dispersed primary Si phases and eutectic structures. The Al-20Si-AlN, TiC composites showed that the reinforcements were distributed along the boundary of the Al-20Si alloy. The UTS increased with increasing the AlN, TiC contents. At a lower load, with an increasing weight fraction of reinforcements, the wear rate decreased in both composites and the wear mechanism was adhesive wear. At a higher load, the shape of the debris changes the mechanism of the AlN composites to abrasive-adhesion wear and this resulted in an increase of the wear rate.

  • In this study, a polydioxanone (PDO) and poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) sheath-core biphasic monofilament was designed to develop an esophageal stent with improved mechanical properties and controlled biodegradability. The radial force of PDO/PLLA sheath-core stent was 10.24 N, while that of PDO stent was 5.64 N. Deteriorations of tensile strength, elastic modulus and elongation during degradation test were also delayed on PDO/PLLA group. Hyaluronic acid-dopamine conjugate and $BaSO_4/PDO$ conjugate coating layers provided improved tissue adhesion strength and reasonable X-ray contrast, respectively. Taken all together, the sheath-core filaments with tissue adhesive and radiopaque properties will be useful in designing esophageal stents.
