The permafrost active layer plays an important role in permafrost dynamics. Ecological patterns, processes, and water and ice contents in the active layer are spatially and temporally complex depending on landscape heterogeneity and local-scale variations in hydrological processes. Although there has been emerging interest in the application of optical remote sensing techniques to permafrost environments, optical sensors are significantly limited in accessing information on near surface geo-cryological conditions. The primary objective of this study was to investigate capability of L-band SAR data for monitoring spatio-temporal variability of permafrost ecosystems and underlying soil conditions. This study exploits information from different polarimetric SAR observables in relation to permafrost environmental conditions. Experimental results show that each polarimetric radar observable conveys different information on permafrost environments. In the case of the dual-pol mode, the radar observables consist of two backscattering powers and one correlation coefficient between polarimetric channels. Among them, the dual-pol scattering powers are highly sensitive to freeze/thaw transition and can discriminate grasslands or ponds in thermokarst area from other permafrost ecosystems. However, it is difficult to identify the ground conditions with dual-pol observables. Additional backscattering powers and correlation coefficients obtained from quad-pol mode help understanding seasonal variations ofradar scattering and assessing geo-cryological information on soil layers. In particular, co-pol coherences atHV-basis and circular-basis were found to be very usefultools for mapping and monitoring near surface soil properties.
Precipitation is a crucial component of water cycle and play a key role in hydrological processes. Traditionally, gauge-based precipitation is the main method to achieve high accuracy of rainfall estimation, but its distribution is sparsely in mountainous areas. Recently, satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) provide grid-based precipitation with spatio-temporal variability, but SPPs contain a lot of uncertainty in estimated precipitation, and the spatial resolution quite coarse. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to generate new grid-based daily precipitation using Automatic weather system (AWS) in Korea and multiple SPPs(i.e. CHIRPSv2, CMORPH, GSMaP, TRMMv7) during the period of 2003-2017. And this study used a machine learning based Random Forest (RF) model for generating new merging precipitation. In addition, several statistical linear merging methods are used to compare with the results of the RF model. In order to investigate the efficiency of RF, observed data from 64 observed Automated Synoptic Observation System (ASOS) were collected to evaluate the accuracy of the products through Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE), probability of detection (POD), false alarm rate (FAR), and critical success index (CSI). As a result, the new precipitation generated through the random forest model showed higher accuracy than each satellite rainfall product and spatio-temporal variability was better reflected than other statistical merging methods. Therefore, a random forest-based ensemble satellite precipitation product can be efficiently used for hydrological simulations in ungauged basins such as the Mekong River.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the stride-to-stride variability between two treadmill conditions; traditional treadmill and special treadmill whose speed can be adjusted automatically by subject's walking speed. Eight male subjects (25.1 years, 172.7 cm, 66.6 kg) were participated in treadmill walking experiment. First, preferred walking speed (PWS) of each subject was determined. Second, each subject performed walking experiment with fixed PWS condition and with free PWS condition for 10 minutes. 3D motion capture system (Motion analysis Corp., USA) with 6 cameras was used to collect motion data with sampling frequency of 120Hz. Temporal and spatial variables for stride-to-stride variability were calculated. Coefficient of variance (CV) which quantifies the amount of variability and Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) which explains the structure (self-similarity) of the variability were used for analysis. Results showed that the amount of variability during free PWS condition was greater than that of fixed PWS condition. DFA results showed that there was a statistical difference between two treadmill conditions for the variables of step length, stance time, and double support time. From these results, it is possible that traditional treadmill study might give incorrect conclusion about gait variability study. Further study is necessary to clarify these matters by considering the number of subjects, experimental time, and gait variables for the study of stride-to-stride variability.
The objectives of this study were to evaluate spatial and temporal variability of water quality in 10 reservoirs and identify the key nutrients (N, P) influencing chlorophyll-a (CHL) along with analysis of empirical models and zonal patterns of total phosphorus (TP) and CHL. We analyzed total nitrogen (TN), TP, CHL, water clarity (Secchi depth, SD), and evaluated potential limiting nutrient using ambient N:P ratios and previous criteria of ambient nutrients. Water clarity and CHL varied largely depending on the seasonal monsoon and type of reservoir, but trophic state was diagnosed as eutrophy, base on mean CHL in most reservoirs. The peak of TP did not match the contents of CHL due to rapid flushing during the high run-off period. In the reservoir of DR, regression coefficient in the $P_r$ was 0.510 but was 0.159 in the $M_o$, while the TP-CHL relation in the YR increased during the monsoon compared to the premonsoon. The regression coefficient in the $P_r$ was not statistically significant but the value of $M_o$ was 0.250. TP showed similar longitudinal zonal gradients among the reservoirs of DR, YR and JR. Empirical models of TP-CHL, based on overall data, showed that CHL was determined by phosphorus($R^2=0.244$, p=0.0019). Regression analysis of CHL-SD showed a stronger linear fit ($R^2=0.638$, p<0.001) than the TP-CHL model.
We investigated the spatial and temporal variations of phytoplankton in Youngil Bay as well as the effect of water physico-chemical parameters. Water samples at three stations were collected and measured monthly from May to November in 2010. The taxa of phytoplankton observed in this study were classified as 33 Bacillariophyceae, 23 Dinophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 2 Crysophyceae and 1 Cryptophyceae. The highest biomass of phytoplankton was observed at inner station in September, which was characterized high concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphate(DIP) in surface water after rainfall. Nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a and phytoplankton biomass values showed the marked trend to decrease from the inner bay to the outer bay. Pearson's correlation co-efficient between salinity and other water parameters including chlorophyll-a, pH and DIP showed the strong negative relationship r=-0.82, r=-0.78 and r=-0.75 (p<0.01), respectively. These results indicate that the water quality of Youngil Bay could be stimulated by nutrient enriched input from Hyeogsan River discharge, and the spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton biomass principally limited to DIP concentration from Hyeogsan river.
We investigated the community structure and performed detailed characterization of fish larvae assemblages collected from the southern coast of Korea in the spring and summer of 2021. The total abundance of fish larvae varied from 193.6 to 1,915.6 ind. 10 m-3. The species were distributed across 10 orders with 23 families, and 41 taxa. The dominant taxa were Gobiidae spp., Engraulis japonicus, Nibea albiflora, Sebastiscus spp., Callionymus valenciennei, Pennahia argentata, Sebastes thompsoni, Parablennius yatabei, and Platycephalus indicus. Engraulis japonicus individuals were collected from April to August and their presence contributed greatly to the total abundance of fish larvae. The total number and abundance of species peaked in early summer and the Shannon-Weaver index was in the range 0.11-1.49. Redundancy analyses revealed that the major environmental factors affecting the fish larvae assemblage differed according to the dominant taxa. Water temperature, zooplankton density, and Paracalanus parvus s. l. density were the key factors affecting the spatial and temporal distribution of fish larvae in the southern coast of Korea in spring and summer.
The comparison between the spatial and temporal variability of aridity index, precipitation effectiveness and runoff during El-Nino and La-Nina periods and that of the normal period was conducted to evaluate the regional impacts of El-Nino, La-Nina in hydrologic variables. Aridity index and precipitation effectiveness were estimated using 59 nationwide weather stations data and runoff data of WAMIS were used. The ratio of the difference between El-Nino, La-Nina year value and that of normal year was analyzed. Temporal variation demonstrated that aridity index, precipitation effectiveness and run-off discharge increase in March, April, August, November, December and decrease in February, June, September, October according to El-Nino effect. Aridity index, precipitation effectiveness and run-off discharge increase in March, May, September and decrease in June, August, November, December according to La-Nina effect. The spatial variation of those variables analyzed for different basins showed that impacts in the Han river basin relatively higher than that of other basins.
Temperature, salinity, COD, DIN (Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen), DIP (Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus), and Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ obtained from the southern coastal waters during the period of 2003 to 2005 were analyzed. Variability in temperature was not found between groups in southern coastal waters, but significantly different depending on sampling sites (p<0.05). The average temperature in 2003 estimated at $18.33^{\circ}C$ that was annually increased by 2005 and significantly different based on statistics (p<0.05). Unlikely to temperature, salinity was significantly different depending on sampling sites, as well as monthly variations (p<0.05). Likewise to temperature, the value of salinity was annually increased. COD estimated at the average of $>1.7\;mg\;l^{-1}$ for three years, indicating optimal water quality. The fluctuations of nutrients were extremely shown in different sampling sites and monthly variations. Chlorophyll a recorded above $2.0{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$ which was associated with high primary phytoplankton, whereas it showed much fluctuations in temporal and spatial, In particular, Tongyong, Jaranman, Jinjuman, and Samcheonpo located in the southeast were the highest fluctuations in water quality than any other regions. The correlation between salinity/COD and nutrients/chlorophyll a was strongly negative or positive, which was possibly associated with much the introduction of run-off water as well as rainfall in summer.
