  • This study reflects on the subjects of tile papers published by Journal of Automation in Construction, which has focused on such fusion-technology research areas in civil engineering as robotics and automation and observed a growing number of papers and extensiveness of participation during the 2000-2006 periods. This paper provides a current perspective on technology-fusion research in civil engineering, as reflected in the journal of Automation in Construction. Journal of Automation in Construction (AIC) is intended to be of interest of industry personnel, government personnel and researcher in Information Technology (IT) and Automation research in civil engineering. This paper is intended to show a cross country comparison of technology-fusion research through analysis of papers. The research results show that there is a need to increase research collaboration between industry and academia, government and academia, and industry and government to advance the construction industry.

  • The KSTAR device succeeded in first plasma generation on $13^{th}$ June of 2008 through comprehensive system test and commissioning. Among various kinds of the key factors that decisively affected the project, success in the construction and assembly of the major tokamak structure was most important one. Every engineering aspects of each structure were finally confirmed in the integrated commissioning period, and there were no severe troubles and failures prevented the KSTAR device from operating during the commissioning and the first plasma experiments. As a result, all of the experiences and technologies achieved through the KSTAR construction process are expected to be important fundamentals for future construction projects of superconducting fusion devices. This paper summarizes key engineering features of the major structures and of the machine assembly.

  • A novel deoC gene was identified from Paenibacillus sp. EA001 isolated from soil. The gene had an open reading frame (ORF) of 663 base pairs encoding a protein of 220 amino acids with a molecular mass of 24.5 kDa. The amino acid sequence was 79% identical to that of deoxyribose 5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) from Geobacillus sp. Y412MC10. The deoC gene encoding DERA was cloned into an expression vector and the protein was expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant DERA was purified using Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and then characterized. The optimum temperature and pH of the enzyme were $50^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. The specific activity for the substrate deoxyribose 5-phosphate (DR5P) was $62\;{\mu}mol/min/mg$. The $K_m$ value for DR5P was determined to be 145 mM with the $k_{cat}$ value of $3.2{\times}10^2/s$ from Lineweaver-Burk plots. The EA001 DERA showed stability toward a high concentration of acetaldehyde (100 mM).

  • Pigments with minute particle sizes, such as carbon black (CB) and pigment red 48:2 (P.R.48:2), are the most important types of pigment and have been widely used in many industrial applications. However, minute particles have large surface areas, high oil absorption and low surface energy. They therefore tend to be repellent to the vehicle and lose stability, resulting in significant increases in viscosity or reaggregation in the vehicle. Therefore, finding the best way to improve the dispersion properties of minute particle size pigments presents a major technical challenge. In this study, minute particle types of CB and P.R.48:2 were treated with nitrogen gas plasma generated via radio frequency-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) to increase the dispersion properties of minute particles in deionized (DI) water. The morphologies and particle sizes of untreated and plasma treated particles were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The average distributions of particle size were measured using a laser particle sizer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was carried out on the samples to identify changes in molecular interactions during plasma processing. The results of our analysis indicate that N2 plasma treatment is an effective method for improving the dispersibility of minute particles of pigment in DI water.
