  • Recently, the blockchain technology, which can decentralize business ecosystems using secure transactions without trusted intermediaries, has been spotlighted. Full nodes play an important role in maintaining decentralization in that they independently verify transactions using their full historical transaction data. However, the storage requirement of a full node for storing historical data is continuously increasing, and thus, has become harder for users to run a full node due to the heavy price for storage costs. In this paper, we investigate research trends on reducing the costs of storing blockchain transaction data so that nodes with low storage requirements can be used in the blockchain network.

  • Recently, with the trend of information technology convergence and electrification, batteries are being widely used in fields such as industry, transportation, and specific applications. By 2030, the secondary battery market is expected to grow explosively by more than eight times compared with 2020 to $351.7 billion owing to the expanding adoption of electric vehicles. Depending on the electrochemical reactions in the electrode, a primary battery can only discharge through an irreversible reaction, while a secondary battery can be repeatedly charged and discharged using reversible reactions. According to the type of charge carrier ions, secondary batteries may be classified into those made of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and aluminum ions. We analyze the current status and technological issues of lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and solid-state batteries, which are representative examples of lithium secondary batteries. In addition, research trends in lithium secondary batteries are discussed.

  • With the widespread demand from data-intensive tasks such as machine learning and large-scale databases, the amount of data processed in modern computing systems is increasing exponentially. Such data-intensive tasks require large amounts of memory to rapidly process and analyze massive data. However, existing computing system architectures face challenges when building large-scale memory owing to various structural issues such as CPU specifications. Moreover, large-scale memory may cause problems including memory overprovisioning. The Compute Express Link (CXL) allows computing nodes to use large amounts of memory while mitigating related problems. Hence, CXL is attracting great attention in industry and academia. We describe the overarching concepts underlying CXL and explore recent research trends in this technology.

  • We investigated technological trends in an electrocardiogram (ECG)-based biometric cryptosystem that uses physiological features of ECG signals to provide personally identifiable cryptographic key generation and authentication services. The following technical details of the cryptosystem were investigated and analyzed: preprocessing of ECG signals, extraction of personally identifiable features, generation of quantified encryption keys from ECG signals, reproduction of ECG encryption keys under time-varying noise, and new security applications based on ECG signals. The cryptosystem can be used as a security technology to protect users from hacking, information leakage, and malfunctioning attacks in wearable/implantable medical devices, wireless body area networks, and mobile healthcare services.

  • This paper presents concepts, policies, industry trends, and related issues in urban air mobility (UAM). UAM will contribute to transportation by mitigating traffic congestion and environmental problems in the future. Accordingly, governments of major countries are promoting UAM policies and demonstration projects as well as preparing laws and certification standards. In UAM, overseas startups lead airframe developments, and major companies from the aircraft, automotive, and information technology industries are also participating. In addition, startups and major companies are building the corresponding infrastructure. For the development of UAM, issues related to technology, regulation systems, and infrastructure still need to be resolved.

  • The competition for technological supremacy is unfolding in the high-tech field, and quantum computing can be determinant for economic and security ripple effects. The United States and China, leaders in quantum computing, have developed this field through adequate policies. The United States has fostered quantum computing through government policies and competition among private companies, while China has secured world-class technology through large-scale government investment and attracting foreign talent. In quantum computing, securing talented people is essential to guarantee independent technology development regarding academic attributes and security. We analyze quantum computing policies in the United States and China on a timeline and determine their policy trends. In addition, the policies for securing talent in these countries are reviewed, and the policy effects are compared based on literature analysis. Through the analysis of policy cases between the United States and China, bilateral policy implications for Korea are delineated.

  • As the widespread adoption and proliferation of electric vehicles continue, the secondary battery market is experiencing rapid growth. However, lithium-ion batteries, which constitute a majority of secondary batteries, present high risks of fire and explosion. Solid-state batteries are thus garnering attention as the next-generation batteries since they eliminate fire hazards and significantly reduce the risk of explosions. Against this background, the study aimed to analyze research trends and provide insights by examining 2,927 domestic papers related to solid-state batteries over the past decade (2013-2022). Specifically, we used topic modeling to extract major keywords associated with solid-state batteries research and to explore the network characteristics across major topics. The changes in research on solid-state batteries were analyzed in-depth by calculating topic dominance by year. The findings provide an overview of the emerging trends in domestic solid-state battery research, and might serve as a valuable reference in shaping long-term research directions.
