  • IoT(Internet of Things) based underground risk assessment system surrounding water pipeline enables an advanced monitoring and prediction for unexpected underground hazards such as abrupt road-side subsidence and urban sinkholes due to a leak in water pipeline. For the development of successful assessment technology, the PSU(Water Pipeline Safety Unit) which detects the leakage and movement of water pipes. Then, the IoT-based underground risk assessment system surrounding water pipeline will be proposed. The system consists of early detection tools for underground events and correspondence services, by analyzing leakage and movement data collected from PSU. These methods must be continuous and reliable, and cover certain block area ranging a few kilometers, for properly applying to regional water supply changes.

  • In this study, observations of oil leakage samples taken from the actual site were performed to identify the causes of the oil leakage phenomenon. As a result, the separation of the material components was determined as the main cause of the oil leakage phenomenon based on the changes in the surface conditions, and verification of this was conducted. The evaluation results confirmed that the filler component of the asphalt mastic subsided with the lapse of the settling time, and that the difference ratio of the filler contents of the upper and lower specimens was up to 23.8% after day 28. Based on these results, a hypothesis on the oil leakage mechanism of asphalt mastic was established, and then modeling of the entire process of oil leakage was performed.

  • In the Francis turbine, the leakage flow through the runner gaps which are between the runner and the stator structure influences the internal flow and hydraulic performance. Thus, the investigation for the flow characteristics induced by the runner gaps is important. However, the runner gaps are often disregarded by considering the time and cost of the numerical analysis. Therefore, in this study, the flow characteristics according to runner gaps of the Francis turbine model were investigated including the leakage flow of the runner cone. The three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analyses were conducted using a scale-adaptive simulation shear stress transport as a turbulence model for observing the influence of the leakage flow on the internal flow and hydraulic performance. The efficiencies were decreased slightly with runner gaps; and the complicated flows were captured in the gaps.

  • When the characteristics of a linear induction motor (LIM) are analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA), it is desirable to set the voltage source as an input. If the voltage source is set as an input in FEA, the leakage inductance and primary resistance of the equivalent circuit must be entered by direct calculation, and the magnetizing inductance and secondary reaction effects are directly considered in FEA. Exact calculation is necessary because the primary winding resistance and leakage inductance directly entered will have a significant effect on the LIM output. Therefore, in this study, we accurately calculated the primary leakage inductance and analyzed the resulting LIM characteristics. We calculated the leakage inductance using an analytical equation and FEA, and we confirmed the accuracy by comparing the results with the value experimentally calculated using a manufactured model. We also analyzed the instrument performance and thrust of the LIM as a function of the difference in the leakage inductance. Finally, we present the conclusions on the precise analysis based on the calculation of the leakage inductance.

  • Damaged liners may be detected by using leakage detection systems. For the reason, many types of leakage detection systems are applied to analyze or detect damages of lining system such as electrical detection method for the landfill sites. However, most of them can be applied in the new landfill construction sites because sensors should be installed in the bottom of liner systems. This paper shows a case study reviewing the development of a fence type leakage detection method, monitoring system and pilot plant test results, so that they can be economically and efficiently applied to actual used or in-use sites without a leakage detection system.

  • Hydrogen will be a future eco-friendly energy source that can replace current fossil fuels However when hydrogen gas leaks and people inhale a lot of hydrogen gases, they can have fatal effects fell into comas. Therefore, we need to develop a safety technology and related guidelines for reducing risks of hydrogen leakage. In this regard, we carried out demonstration tests assuming a situation of hydrogen leakage. Before the experiments, we analyze the standards for governor facilities to check vent positions and sensor positions. Then, we select four types of ventilation structures and proceeds with the experiments of hydrogen leakage at 1 LPM and 1.5 LPM. Based on the experimental results, we propose the direction on optimization of vent positions and sensor positions in the hydrogen leakage situation.

  • Nonflammable mixtures of flammable and nonflammable refrigerants are possible as substitute refrigerants for use in domestic heat pumps and refrigerators. Refrigerant leakage from such a system is of paramount concern since it is possible that the resulting mixture composition remaining in system will reside in the flammable range. This paper presents a simulation of a leakage process of refrigerant mixtures. Idealized cases of isothermal leakage process are considered in this study representing a slow leak. Simulation is performed for selected composition of binary and ternary refrigerant mixture; R-32/134a and R-32/125/134a. Mixture compositions with respect to percentage leak of original charge are presented. In isothermal leakage process, both vapor and liquid compositions of more volatile refrigerant decrease during vapor and liquid leak, but the total composition of this component decreases during vapor leak and increases during liquid leak. Vapor and liquid compositions are determined depending on the vapor-liquid equilibrium relation of the refrigerant mixture. The refrigerant mixture left in the system can go to a nonflammable direction relying on which component in the mixture is flammable.

  • Thermal stratification has continuously caused several piping failures in nuclear power plants since the early 1980s. However, this critical thermal effect was not considered when the old nuclear power plants were designed. Therefore, it is urgent to evaluate this unexpected thermal effect on the structural integrity of piping systems. In this paper, the thermal effects of stratified flow in two different safety injection piping systems were investigated by using a coupled CFD-FE method. Since stratified flow is generally generated by turbulent penetration and/or valve leakage, thermal stress analyses as well as CFD analyses were carried out considering these two primary causes. Numerical results show that the most critical factor governing thermal stratification is valve leakage and that temperature distribution significantly changes according to the leakage path. In particular, in-leakage has a high possibility of causing considerable structural problems in RCS piping.
