Analysis was conducted for the units related to clothing contained in 10 different technology & home economics textbooks of 2nd grade middle school students approved by the Ministry of Education under the 7th national curriculum. Types of student activities were categorized based on "size of groups", "type of problems" and "methods of carrying out tasks" and the this study sought to explore future directions for action plans especially in terms of composition of contents, the methods of performance and suggestions. As a result, the volume of each part in clothing & textiles section was investigated. Among them 'dressing' part was found to make up the largest percentage of the clothing unit. And among the six of the detailed contents, "How to Wear Traditional Korean Clothes" and "Functions of Clothes", took up the largest space. In additions, the types of students activities and methods of implementing and how to performing tasks vary depending on publishing companies and detailed contents of areas. As a result, 'individual activities', 'structured problem', and 'problems that require prior home-based experience' were most common types of activities. Based on this study, it is suggested to increase the number of small group activities and the activities that require diverse problem-solving methods.

  • This study aimed at analyzing the food safety units of technology and home economics textbooks, as 'safety' emerged as a key concept in the 2015 revised curriculum. From each textbook, the main text, auxiliary elements(including tables, figures, etc.), and related activities were analyzed. According to the results, first, the main texts emphasized the importance of food selection(3.08 pages), food safety hazards(2.93 pages), safe storage and management of food(2.63 pages), and meal preparation with safety and hygiene(0.98 pages). Secondly, when the auxiliary elements were examined, the food safety content was most often presented in the form of tables/illustrations/pictures, followed by supplementary learning materials, activities, captions, end-of-chapter summaries, the chapter introduction and review quiz, and unit introduction. Thirdly, most activities were individual activities rather than small group or collective activities and were focused on investigation, evaluation, craft, application, implementation, inference and judgment, utilization, and proposition. In conclusion, it is recommended for textbooks to evenly distribute the content in the main texts and auxiliary elements, and include more group activities when developing textbooks in the future.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the development of a teaching and learning curriculum contributing to the development of self-identity, one of the most important developmental tasks during adolescence, and its effectiveness. This research analyzed the contents concerning self-identity and its subordinate concepts in 12 different technology and home economics textbooks for 7th graders. Based on the analysis, a teaching and learning curriculum contributing to the development of adolescents’' self-identity was developed and applied to classes through discretional creative activities. The effectiveness of the curriculum was analyzed by conducting a survey on the students before and after its application. Assessments were also conducted on the lessons applied. As a result, the lessons designed to help the development of self-identity increased the scores of self-identity, as well as all subordinate concepts, including subjectivity, self-acceptance, future planning, intimacy, stability and uniqueness. An ANCOVA analysis was conducted in order to determine whether the enhanced results of the survey after the classes were due to the application of the curriculum. It was found that the classes proved helpful to the students as the application of the curriculum remained effective even after the other influencing factors affecting selfidentity were controlled.

  • This study analyzed the images of father and mother featured in the illustrations of the middle and high school textbooks, paying attention to the roles of the school education for the effective gender equality. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the middle and high school textbooks would serve for a balanced gender role through their illustrations. To this end, this study sampled a total of 36 middle and high school textbooks: for the middle schoolers, and for high schoolers, and thereby, selected their illustrations of parents, and then, analyzed them in terms of their external aspects and contents. Summing up, it could be confirmed through the middle and high school textbooks that most of their illustrations show gender-equal roles, while some of them reflect a fixed conception of the gender roles. Since the homes are the bases for socialization of the children about the gender roles, it is required of our middle and high schools to implement a gender-equal education. As seen in the results of this study, some illustrations of our middle and high school 'technology and home Education' textbooks feature the mothers as housekeeper and the fathers as family heads creating the goods and services. Hence, it is urgent to correct such conception of the patriarchal gender roles.

  • The following experiment was designed to test the students' involvement in the interactive activities and objectives of the relevant chapters in the newly revised curriculum of 2007. The experiment was carried out with the purpose of understanding the level of participation of the Grade 9 students who have successfully completed the Grade 8 "Choice of Food and Diet" and "Table Manners and Dining Etiquette" courses with classified materials such as tables/diagrams/pictures, reading, and activity resources from Technology Home Economics textbooks. The chapters "Choice of Food and Diet" and "Food Preparation and Etiquette" generally emphasize the practical and experiential part of domestic life through using various activity resources; while the tables/diagrams/pictures and reading materials do not provide the students with first-hand experience, they support the students' learning by explaining the basic knowledge required for doing the activities and solving various problems. Within the main training courses, the objectives which the students achieved the highest marks were(in a descending order) "Table Manners and Dining Etiquette" (3.24), "Checking Nutrition Labels, Food Expiration Date, Country of Origin When Buying Food" (3.18), Additionally "Making Food" and "Planning a Healthy, Balanced Diet" hardly met the goals, the result of which shows clear relations to the well achieved objectives from the list of in-class activities that students directly participated in. Therefore, in order to increase the students' interest in the Food and Diet section of Technology Home Economics textbooks, it is recommended to encourage the students to actively engage in the class activities by developing various learning resources and teacher education/pedagogical materials, rather than following the conventional lecture-based teaching methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to look at families as presented on the technology-home economics subject of middle school. To do this, I analyzed the 2007 revised curriculum of the technology-home economics subject, 'Changing Families,' in 11 technology-home economics textbooks (8th grade). The findings are as follows. First, family-related chapters are expanded compared with the previous curriculum in the 2007 revised curriculum. In addition, the new version emphasizes understanding and acceptance of change in families to improve the family life of adolescents. Second, in the 11 types of technology-home economics textbooks, the focusing was on the meaning of the family, the family structure, the function of the family, family roles and family values. There were also no major differences in the aspect of development. Third, in the technology-home economics textbooks, the family was defined as the 'basic group of society', 'a group composed by blood relationships, marriage and adoption', 'an affective group' and 'cohabiting group'. At the same time, there were many cases in which the description of the family was overly romanticized. Such a description of the family does not match the individual family experience of an adolescent. Fourth, all of textbooks dealt with the diversity of the family structure, such as single-parent families, remarriages families, and multi-cultural families. However, the structural characteristics and problems with these types of families are excessively emphasized, which can result in students having stereotypical images of specific family types. Fifth, the explanation of the function of the family was similar among textbooks. The importance of intergenerational cooperation and gender equality was also emphasized. However, such a concept is not considered as proper in a modern society. Thus, the description of a family based on the nuclear family should be sublated. In addition, the explanation of families overall should be developed in such a way that adolescents can interpret their own family experience rather than as an enlightening declaration of the family which disregards the dynamic relationships individual families actually experience.

  • The contents of 'Nutrition and Diet for Adolescents' in the 12 technology and home economics middle school 1st grade textbooks are analyzed based on the elaboration theory. The elaboration theory is the lecture strategy with 7 essential elements, proposed by Reigeluth. The elaboration strategies shown in 'Nutrition of Adolescents' and 'Diet for Adolescents' are all the same in 12 books, the conceptual elaboration, and the process elaboration, respectively. On the other hand, the elaboration strategies shown in 'Diet and Dietary Habit for Adolescents Nutrition Issues' and 'Proper Eating Habit and Nutrition Issues' are different depend upon the textbooks, all 3 conceptual, theoretical, and process elaborations strategies are shown. The element of pro study is presented by study objective, opening the thinking, and looking back. The summarizer is presented in all 11 but 1 textbooks by various activities and data. On the other hand, the element of analogy has the lowest implementation rate, only 3 among the 12 textbooks implement the analogy. The cognitive-strategy activator and learner control are shown in all 12 textbooks, mostly by data. Implementation of more activities and more analogies might be helpful to the students' participation and understanding the contents of 'Nutrition and Diet for Adolescents'.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify learning topics linked to Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) in the dietary life unit of middle school technology and home economics textbooks and to develop teaching-learning plans and learning materials to verify the feasibility and field suitability. This study was carried out through analysis, design, development, and evaluation stages, and the results are as follows. First, in the analysis stage, the dietary life contents of the five home economics textbooks written based on the 2015 revised curriculum were analyzed, and dietary life-related goals were extracted from the 169 SDG targets to reorganize the learning topics linked to the contents of the textbooks. Second, in the design stage, the overall goal of the entire class was set and each session was designed by selecting the learning goals, learning topics, and learning contents, reflecting the SDGs related to the session to be developed. Based on the analyses of textbooks and the SDGs related to dietary life, the themes of 'desirable eating habits of adolescents', 'food production', 'food distribution', and 'food consumption and disposal' were extracted. Third, in the development stage, a total of 11 teaching-learning plans and student worksheets were developed, and an evaluation sheet was developed for expert verification. Fourth, in the evaluation stage, the feasibility and field suitability of the teaching-learning plans were verified by 5 home economics teachers. Learning goals, learning contents, connectivity to related SDGs, and feasibility of teaching-learning plan were evaluated, and based on the assessment results, teaching-learning plans were revised.
