  • The CubeSat, which was first launched to verify new technologies and for educational purposes, is now widely used as an educational tool since it makes possible development of manpower through practical training to produce the satellite at low development costs. At present, research and development on the CubSat is rapidly expanding in domestic and foreign universities. As one of the final 3 teams selected in the 2013 CUBE SATELLITE CONTEST organized by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Chosun University is also currently conducting R & D of STEP Cube Lab, which is a CubeSat scheduled to be launched in 2015 and whose main task is to verify space-based technologies in orbit. The present paper tries to present an overview of the CubeSat of Chosun University whose development is being led by its undergraduate students, and further, introduce the strengths of the present development program for developing space experts, based on the educational achievements from the R & D.

  • Aerospace and geospatial technologies have become more accessible by researchers and agricultural practitioners, and these technologies can play a pivotal role in transforming current pest management practices in agriculture and forestry. During the past 20 years, technologies including satellites, manned and unmanned aircraft, spectral sensors, information systems, and autonomous field equipment, have been used to detect pests and apply control measures site-specifically. Despite the availability of aerospace and geospatial technologies, along with big-data-driven artificial intelligence, applications of such technologies to apple IPM have not been realized yet. Using a case study conducted at the Korea Apple Research Institute, this article discusses the advances and limitations of current aerospace and geospatial technologies that can be used for improving apple IPM.

  • This paper describes the development and verification of control algorithms for V2X and environmental sensor integrated intersection support and safety systems. The objective of the research is to develop core technologies for effective fusion of V2X and environmental sensors and to develop new safety function for intersection safety. One of core technologies is to achieve the improvement of GPS accuracy, and the other is to develop the algorithm of a vehicle identification which matches all data from V2X, vehicle sensors and environmental sensors to specific vehicles. A intersection optimal pass (IOP) algorithm is designed based on these core technologies. IOP recommends appropriate speed to pass the intersection in the consideration of traffic light signal and preceeding vehicle existence. Another function is developed to prevent a collision avoidance when car crash caused by traffic violation of surrounding vehicles is expected. Finally all functions are implemented and tested in three test vehicles. It is shown that IOP can support convenient and comfortable driving with recommending optimal pass speed and collision avoidance algorithm can effectively prevent collision caused by traffic sign violation of surrounding vehicles.

  • The comparative evaluation/analysis of the initiation technologies currently being used, and the advanced initiation technologies currently being developed lot the aerospace and defense applications was performed. The evaluation criteria used were the compliance, performance, reliability, safety, and cost. The results clearly indicate that there is no one single initiation technology that will satisfy entire spectrum of initiation system requirements. Each initiation system architecture would require different initiation technologies that will satisfy the overall system performance requirements. However, laser initiation, particularly, the laser diode initiation has been getting more attention in recent years. The laser diode initiation, for most part, eliminates EMI and ESD concerns. In addition, laser diode initiation system can also be designed into relatively small packages, are optically connected systems by very light weight cables, are relatively easily designed to meet variety of initiation system requirements. Due to the these compelling factors, laser diode initiation has potential of becoming common initiation systems for many different aerospace and defense application.

  • In this paper are described recent studies about variable nozzles, that are a rectangular type nozzle and an axisymmetric type nozzle, of the precooled turbojet engine(S-engine) which are developed for the demonstration of the key technologies for the propulsion system of the hypersonic airplane and the first stage propulsion of the TSTO space plane. For the rectangular nozzle, three types of C-shaped carbon/carbon composite cowls which includes subscale model of the precooled turbojet engine are fabricated and the fine attachment to the ramp is confirmed. For the firing of the S-engine, stainless steel cowl with concrete heat insulator are fabricated and tested for 20 sec. Axisymmetric variable plug nozzle which is made of C/C material is fabricated and pressurized by the cold flow test. The axisymmetric plug nozzle can be operative up to 0.57 MPa of nozzle inlet pressure.

  • Planetary exploration rovers are likely to make a trip on a winding and sloping road of irregular surfaces to the destination in order to accomplish scientific missions. One of the key technologies for rovers is a suspension for traveling and performing exploration missions; the suspension is an essential area of technology for a stable movement of a rover. In this study, an 8-wheel suspension is designed to enable efficient climbing of slopes on a passage to the destination. For the two front wheels among the eight wheels, the moment at the pivot connecting two wheels is derived when the distance between the wheels and the torque of wheels are same. A test experiment was performed to compare the magnitude of moment according to the change in tilt angle and the position of the pivot. Finally, a suspension design considering the position of the pivot was proposed to enhance the hill-climbing performance.

  • Terrorists always threats the global security with the possibility of using prohibited warfare, NBCs(Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare). Compared to other prohibited warfares, most of biological warfare agents (BWAs) have no physical properties and time delays from spread to affect. Therefore the early detection is important to protect and decontaminate from BWAs. On the preliminary detection stage for suspicious material, most of detection kits only serve to know weather the BWAs exists or not. Due to this reason, simple field confirmation testing for suspicious substances have been used to identify materials which show negative result on detection kits. Considering the current Lab on a Chip(LOC) technologies, we suggest simple identification platform for unknown suspicious substances based on paper fluidics. We hope that our research will envision the future direction for the specific point-of-view for LOC technologies on detection strategy of BWAs.

  • Since 1960s, cryogenic cooling technologies has been adopted in the development of spacecraft with components that must be cooled to cryogenic temperatures of 2 to 150 K. In recent years this technology has been a substantial growth in the emerging number of programs that include such spacecraft to service scientific, military, and weather observation missions. The cooling of optics and detectors to reduce signal noise in infrared (IR) telescopes is the principal applications of cryogenic cooling technologies. The choice of cooling technologies depends on the desired temperature level, the amount of heat to be removed, and the required operating life. This paper will present the status of modern cryogenic cooling technologies especially for space application.

  • 'Multi-scale mass-deployable cooperative robots' is a next generation robotics paradigm where a large number of robots that vary in size cooperate in a hierarchical fashion to collect information in various environments. While this paradigm can exhibit the effective solution for exploration of the wide area consisting of various types of terrain, its technical maturity is still in its infant state and many technical hurdles should be resolved to realize this paradigm. In this paper, we propose to develop new design and manufacturing methodologies for the multi-scale mass-deployable cooperative robots. In doing so, we present various fundamental technologies in four different research fields. (1) Adaptable design methods consist of compliant mechanisms and hierarchical structures which provide robots with a unified way to overcome various and irregular terrains. (2) Soft composite materials realize the compliancy in these structures. (3) Multi-scale integrative manufacturing techniques are convergence of traditional methods for producing various sized robots assembled by such materials. Finally, (4) the control and communication techniques for the massive swarm robot systems enable multiple functionally simple robots to accomplish the complex job by effective job distribution.
