The determination of the fundamental period of vibration of a structure is essential to earthquake design. Current codes provide formulas for the approximate estimation of the fundamental period of earthquake-resistant building systems. These formulas are dependent only on the height of the structure or number of storeys without taking into account the presence of infill walls into the structure, despite the fact that infill walls increase the stiffness and mass of the structure leading to significant changes in the fundamental period. Furthermore, such a formulation is overly conservative and unable to account for structures with geometric irregularities. In this study, which comprises the companion paper of previous published research by the authors, the effect of the vertical geometric irregularities on the fundamental periods of masonry infilled structures has been investigated, through a large set of infilled frame structure cases. Based on these results, an attempt to quantify the reduction of the fundamental period due to the vertical geometric irregularities has been made through a proposal of properly reduction factor.
A survey of risk perception in South Korea was conducted in 2007 to evaluate relative riskiness of typical industrial and technological risks. This article summarizes the characteristics of risk perception using psychometric analyses. The survey with a sample size of 1,194 reviews the perceived level of 25 risk items in the areas of transportation, chemicals, environment, industry, nuclear power generation, and newly-introduced risks. Six categories of risk identified by a factor analysis show that the level of perceived risk does not correspond to the statistical level. Psychometric analyses including voluntariness, severity, effect manifestation, exposure pattern, controllability, familiarity, benefit and necessity demonstrate that voluntary, familiar and immediate risks are perceived as less risky than involuntary, unfamiliar and delayed ones. Risk communication is critical in reducing the discrepance between objective and subjective level of risk. However, the amount of risk information does not always justify a successful risk communication. A safety policy, risk communication strategy in particular, should take into account diverse dimensions of risk reviewed by psychometric analyses in the study. Social policy toward safety can be improved by integrating policy, human, and social factors as well as technological advances.
This paper empirically investigates the rates of embodied technological change and their relative contributions to total factor productivity growth for manufacturing, using the Korean plant-level manufacturing data for the period of 1985-2003. We adopt a production-based estimation method proposed by Sakellaris and Wilson (2004) in order to examine the marginal productivity increase of each vintage of equipment over time. We find that the rate of embodied technological progress of Korea's manufacturing sector maintains the annual average level of 13.7 percent from 1985 to 2003, slightly lower than 16.9 percent of the U.S., estimated by Sakellaris & Wilson (2004). While the rate recorded a remarkable increase after the 1997 financial crisis, IT-producing and IT-using industries achieved higher rates of embodied technological progress than non-IT counterparts.
Technological competitiveness of SMEs is an important factor of the country's industrial competitiveness. And technological competitiveness of SMEs in South Korea has been a long-term congestion. Through the study, we analyzed the correlation between SMEs technical support policy and technological competitiveness. As a result, the technological competitiveness of SMEs is positively related to R&D policy of funding, taxation and infrastructure. And on the other hand, R&D support policy positively effected the technological competitiveness of subcontractors, 5~49 people of small enterprises and innovation SMEs. We suggest that technology fund should be increased by expanding policy funds, investments and loans. Also, allocation of strategic R&D resources and supportive researching staffs are needed to strengthen high-growth innovative SMEs.
This paper analyzes how the concept of 'technological innovation' has changed in South Korea. We conducted keyword co-occurrence network analysis on articles in Science and Technology, a magazine published by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies since 1968. With writers and readership from professional science and technology communities, government officers, as well as citizens, Science and Technology is a suitable archival source to represent discourses relating to South Korean use of the term 'technological innovation'. We used all the articles from 1968 to 2017 that include the term 'technological innovation' in their title. Also, we analyzed the keywords that co-occur with 'technological innovation' by the frame divided into three periods. The following conclusions were elicited: The term 'technological innovation' has been understood as a leading factor for government-driven industrial development since the 1960s. Nevertheless, the meaning of the term evolved over time. In the 1960s and 70s, 'technological innovation' referred to the introduction, assimilation, and transfer of technology. However, since the 1980s it has acquired a more multilateral meaning, connecting various industrial sectors and interest groups. This conclusion reveals that the meaning of 'technological innovation' is not static, but rather it is constructed over time. This study is expected to contribute to research on the direction of the technological innovation policy of Korea.
The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the relationships between market environments and technology strategy using the data gathered from Korean manufacturing firms. As the significant environmental factors influencing company's technology strategy, two sorts of market aspects are considered; market competition factor and technological dynamics factor. And companies are categorized with respect to the characteristics of market environments they are facing with. Then we seek to find the differences in the contents of technology strategy among the companies in different types of environments through statistical analysis. As a result, it is found that there exist significant relationships between the companies' technology strategy and the environments facing firms.
Recently, there has been an increase in government-wide demand for technological cooperation between government funded research institutes (GFRIs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), while there remain a tension between positive and negative views regarding the support given by GFRIs to encourage the technological innovation of SMEs. Although preceding studies have found that the support given by GFRIs to SMEs tends to have the effect of enhancing the technological innovation outcomes of SMEs, this study examines the question of why the agent that provides technological cooperation to SMEs should be limited to GFRIs. To answer this question, in this study, we first examined the qualitative changes in the external technological cooperation behavior of SMEs over time, from 2007 to 2014. Next, we performed cluster analysis to examine whether there were distinctive characteristics of SMEs that engage in technological cooperation with GFRIs, compared to the various other alternatives available as technological cooperation partners for SMEs. Lastly, to help us identify the characteristics of the companies that technologically cooperate with GFRIs and to facilitate the administrative or practical effort to find companies that would be strong candidates for technological cooperation with GFRIs, we used discriminant analysis to define a discriminant formula for such companies likely to engage in technological cooperation. The results of this study were as follows. First, GFRIs were the most competitive -- as demonstrated by the highest level of satisfaction, etc. - compared to the other alternatives for external technological cooperation available to SMEs. This confirmed the necessity for GFRIs to provide technological cooperation to SMEs. Secondly, the issue of whether the small and medium-sized enterprise had engaged in technological cooperation specifically with GFRIs was found not to be a very significant factor in distinguishing these companies. It was found, however, that SMEs engaged in technological cooperation were distinctive, regardless of the type of institution involved in the technological cooperation. Thirdly, SMEs that were in technological cooperation with GFRIs had the characteristics of being already active in joint research and already familiar with utilizing the systems available for governmental support. The findings of this study offers various insights relevant to establishing national R&D strategies using GFRIs and improving the efficiency of policies and administrative practices intended to help GFRIs assist SMEs.
Previous researches on technological innovation have several limitations such as lack of general mechanism for technological innovation(inputs, throughputs and outputs of technological innovation), large company oriented studies, and ignoring importance of technology management capabilities. So, this study suggested a new model using resource-based theory and system theory, and empirically applied that to SMEs. Structural equation model analysis by using 223 SMEs in Daegu region provided a support for most of hypotheses. Research results showed that all of factors on technological innovation were significantly and positively related with each other: inputs(R&D leadership, innovation strategy, R&D investment, R&D human resource management, external network), throughputs(portfolio management, project management, technology commercialization) and output(technological innovation). In case of technological innovation inputs, R&D leadership influenced on innovation strategy positively and significantly. And R&D leadership and innovation strategy had positive and significant effects on R&D investment, R&D human resource management and external network. R&D human resource management and external network exerted positive and significant influences on technological innovation throughputs such as portfolio management and project management. But R&D investment did not significant impacts on technological innovation throughputs. Among technological innovation throughputs, both portfolio management and project management had positive and significant effect on technology commercialization. In addition, technology commercialization acted positively and significantly technological innovation output. This study suggests necessary of efforts to implement innovation strategy and manage R&D human resource effectively based on CEO's innovativeness and entrepreneurship. Also, if SMEs want to develop technology and commercialize it, they have to cooperate with external technology resources and informations. Research results revealed that proper level of R&D investment, internal and external communication, information sharing, and learning and cooperative culture were very important for improvement of technological innovation performance in SMEs. Especially, this research suggested that if SMEs manage technological innovation process effectively based on resource-based and system approaches, then they can overcome their resource limitations and gain high technological innovation performance. Also, useful policy support for technological innovation of central or regional government by this research model is important factor for SMEs' technological innovation performance.
What is the national competitive power\ulcorner What are the determinants of national competitive advantage\ulcorner In order to find these problems, this study was initiated theoretically through the international trade theory and international managerial strategic theory. The flow of studies, in connection with these competitive advantage, come into industries competitive advantage from national competitive advantage. It is understood that the flow of studies is based on the change of paradigm about the international industry environment. Today, the international industry environment has been changed into vigorous situation with the new trade system such as globalization, UR negotiation, WTO system instead of GATT. Among these environments, all enterprises in any industries should try to enhance their benefit, income profits and develop their management strategy, because it is essential for them to keep and make a profit in order to be competitive against all other rivaling enterprises. According to researchers and the ages of history, the concept and determinants of competitive advantage have been dissimiliar as followings. 1) Theory of absolute advantage : Absolute Product Cost. 2) Theory of comparative advantage : Comparative Product Cost. 3) Theory of reciprocal demand : the Reciprocal Demand Structure. 4) Theory of Hechsher-Ohlin : Factor Endowment. 5) Paradox of Leontief : the Quality of Factor Endowment. 6) Theory of technological gap : R & D. 7) Technological gap model : The Technological Gap. 8) Theory of the product life cycle : Product Life Cycle. 9) Christensen's study : Firm's character & manager's character. 10) Monopolistic Advantage Theories : Monopolistic Advantage 11) Electic theory : Ownership, location and internalization specific advantages. 12) Theory of value chain : Cost advantage, Differentiation, Focus. However all these theories have the limit of illustration regarding today's competitive situation, the Porter's theory shows well the determinants of competitive advantage with competitive strategy. Therefore, the analysis of the competitive advantage for maritime industry should be studied by the determinants of competitive advantage of nations

Objective: Cold stress induces oxidative damage and impairs energy status of broilers. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) exhibits antioxidant properties and modulates energy metabolism of animals. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of NAC on energy status and antioxidant capacity of heart and liver in the cold-stressed broilers. Methods: The experiment consisted of 4 treatments in a 2×2 factorial arrangement with two diets (basal diet or plus 0.1% NAC) and two ambient temperatures (thermoneutral [conventional ambient temperature] or cold stress [10℃±1℃ during days 15 to 42]). Results: No ascites were seen in cold-stressed broilers. NAC did not attenuate the impaired growth performance of stressed birds. However, NAC decreased plasma asparagine but increased aspartate levels in cold-stressed birds (p<0.05). NAC reduced hepatic adenosine triphosphate (ATP) but elevated adenosine diphosphate contents in unstressed birds (p<0.05). The hepatic ratio of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) to ATP was increased in birds fed NAC (p<0.05). NAC decreased plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level and cardiac total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity in unstressed birds, but increased hepatic activities of T-SOD, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in stressed birds (p<0.05). NAC down-regulated hepatic AMP-activated protein kinase but up-regulated cardiac heme-oxigenase mRNA expression in stressed birds, and decreased expression of hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor coactivator-1α as well as hypoxia-inducible factor-1α in liver and heart of birds. Conclusion: Dietary NAC did not affect energy status but enhanced the hepatic antioxidant capacity by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes in cold-stressed broilers.
