메주 유래 Enterococcus faecium 균주의 기능적 특성 및 안전성 (Technological Characteristics and Safety of Enterococcus faecium Isolates from Meju, a Traditional Korean Fermented Soybean Food)

  • γ-Aminobutyric acid 생성에 관여하는 glutamate decarboxylase 유전자 gadA/B를 보유한 메주 유래 Enterococcus faecium 88균주를 대상으로 기능적 특성 및 안전성 평가를 진행하여 메주 유래 E. faecium의 발효식품용 종균으로써의 활용 가능성을 검토하였다. 6% NaCl 농도(w/v)에서 모든 균주의 생장 및 산 생성이 확인되었다. 7% NaCl 농도에서는 21균주(24%)가 낮은 생장을 나타냈으며, 72균주(82%)가 약한 산 생성 활성을 나타냈고, 16균주(18%)는 산생성을 나타내지 않았다. 4% NaCl 농도에서는 모든 균주가 단백질 분해 활성을 나타냈지만, 5% NaCl 농도에서 86균주(98%)가 약한 활성을 나타냈고, 1균주(1%)는 활성을 나타내지 않았다. 지방 분해 활성은 모든 균주에서 나타나지 않았다. 모든 균주가 7종의 항생제(ampicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, penicillin G, tetracycline, vancomycin)에 대해 획득형 항생제 내성을 나타내지 않았다. Enterococcus 심내막염 항원 유전자 efaA 및 tyramine 생성에 관여하는 tyrosine decarboxylase 유전자 tdc가 메주 유래 88균주에서 발견되었지만, 사람 기원 E. faecium 균주가 특이적으로 보유하고 있는 Enterococcus surface protein 유전자 esp는 발견되지 않았다.

Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities of Cleome rutidosperma

  • The study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities of ethanolic extract and its fractions of Cleome rutidosperma. The antioxidant activity, reducing power, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, superoxide anion scavenging activity, nitric oxide anion scavenging activity, in vitro antilipid peroxidation activity and in vitro non-enzymatic hemoglobin glycosylation were studied. The results obtained in the study indicate that Cleome rutidosperma is a potential source of natural antioxidant. All the parameters were found to be concentration dependent and increased with increasing amounts of sample. Flavonoids, phenolic compound like tannins, terpenoids may be responsible for the antioxidant activity of the plant. Variation of solubility parameters in various models may be attributed to non-linearity of activity of ethanol extract fractions models. Further investigation on the isolation and identification of antioxidant component(s) in the plant may lead to chemical entities with potential for clinical use.

비모수 검정을 활용한 자동차 기업의 상대적 경영 효율성 평가 (The Evaluation of Relative Management Efficiency of Automobile Companies Using Non-parametric Approach)

  • This paper investigated the efficiency of automobile firms by using several non-parametric approaches. First, using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), the paper has investigated the critical factors that determine the relative efficiency of management performance in automobile companies. Second, we examined how the firm size impact on the difference of this efficiency by using Kruskl-Wallis Test. Third, by using Mann-whitney test, we also investigated the difference of the efficiency accoss existence of technological innovation activity. Finally, the paper explored the relationship between technological innovation and management efficiency by using logistic regression model. The findings of this study provided practical information for inefficient automobile firms to find benchmarking firms and strategic position to improve their efficiency. The result also provided theoretical and methodological implications for those who explore factors affecting management efficiencies. Future research directions with the limitation of the study are discussed.

Characteristics of ICT-Based Converging Technologies

  • The rising pace of technological change in information and communications technology (ICT) has provoked technological convergence by providing a new mode of diversification. This paper investigates the nature of ICT-based converging technologies by examining comparative empirical evidence on converging versus nonconverging technologies in relation to the following issues: patent application trends, concentration across technologies, the concentration of patenting activity across firms, R&D efforts, and a technology impact index. For this study, a new operational definition of ICT-based converging technology is derived, and a massive quantity of patents, up to around 600,000, is analyzed. This study follows the International Patent Classification as well as the modified European Commission's industry classification system for the classification of technologies and industries, respectively.

Protective effect of Indigofera aspalathoides in chemical induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats

  • The plant Indigofera aspalathoides is used by a large number of tribes in India for the treatment of various hepatic disorders and abscesses. The methanol extract of Indigofera aspalathoides (MEIA) was evaluated for its protective effects on gastric mucosal lesion in Wister albino rats against indomethacin, histamine and ethanol induced gastric mucosal damage. The response to MEIA was assessed using the ulcer index, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), and glutahione level. MEIA pretreatment showed protection against chemical induced gastric mucosal damage, a significant reduction in the ulcer index and TBARS activity and increase glutathione level as compared with that of standard drugs.

  • The plant Indigofera aspalathoides are used by a large number of tribes in India for the treatment of various hepatic disorder. The methanol extract of Indigofera aspalathoides (MEIA) was evaluated for its effect on carbontetrachloride $(CCl_{4})$ induced liver damage. Biochemical parameters such as serum glutamine oxaloacetate trasaminase (SGOT), serum glutamine pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total serum protein (TP), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBRS) and glutathione content of the liver were estimated to assess liver function and metabolism. Biochemical observations suggest that methanol extract of Indigofera aspalathoides (MEIA) significantly restored the liver function and metabolism towards normal condition in $CCl_{4}$-induced hepatic damage.

A Global-Local Approach for Estimating the Internet's Threat Level

  • The Internet is a highly distributed and complex system consisting of billion devices and has become the field of various kinds of conflicts during the last two decades. As a matter of fact, various actors utilise the Internet for illicit purposes, such as for performing distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) and for spreading various types of aggressive malware. Despite the fact that numerous services provide information regarding the threat level of the Internet, they are mostly based on information acquired by their sensors or on offline statistical sampling of various security applications (antivirus software, intrusion detection systems, etc.). This paper introduces proactive threat observatory system (PROTOS), an open-source early warning system that does not require a commercial license and is capable of estimating the threat level across the Internet. The proposed system utilises both a global and a local approach, and is thus able to determine whether a specific host is under an imminent threat, as well as to provide an estimation of the malicious activity across the Internet. Apart from these obvious advantages, PROTOS supports a large-scale installation and can be extended even further to improve the effectiveness by incorporating prediction and forecasting techniques.

충남 북부지역의 지역혁신역량과 기업의 기술혁신활동 (Regional Innovation Capabilities and Firms' Technological Innovation Activities in Chungnam Province of South Korea)

  • 지난 참여 정부에서 지역균형발전정책의 하나로 지역혁신정책을 본격적으로 추진하면서 지역혁신체제에 대한 관심이 높아져 왔다. 그러나 우리나라 지방자치단체들은 아직까지 지역혁신체제와 지역혁신역량에 대한 개념 파악이 미흡한 실정이다. 또한 지역혁신체제에 관한 논의는 많이 있었지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 개념 정립이 부족한 상태이며 학자들 사이에서도 많은 이견이 존재한다. 그리고 지금까지 혁신역량에 관한 논의 및 연구는 대부분 국가 차원에서 이루어져 왔고, 지역 차원에서의 혁신역량 분석은 매우 부족한 실정이다. 이러한 맥락 하에서 본 연구는 지역혁신역량과 기업의 기술혁신활동에 대한 분석을 통해 지역 산업발전을 위한 토대 구축에 기여하고자 한다. 이를 위해 대한민국의 중심부이며 첨단산업의 메카인 충남북부지역을 분석대상으로 선정하여 혁신 주체들이 인지하는 지역혁신역량의 구성 내용, 기업의 혁신활동과 혁신활동의 지역화 간의 관계 등에 대한 설문조사를 수행하고, 학술적 및 정책적 함의를 제시하고자 한다.

시장구조와 표준화 - 우리나라 산업의 단체표준에 대한 실증적 연구- (Market Structure and Standardization -An Empirical Study on Collective Standards in the Korean Industry-)

  • 본 연구는 시장구조에 초점을 맞추어 산업의 표준화 활동 결정요인을 우리나라 제조업에 대해서 계량적으로 검증한다. 단체표준 제정 및 개정 여부를 산업 차원에서 표준화 활동의 대리변수로 삼았고, 그 결정요인으로 시장구조 이외에도 기술적 기회, 자본집약도, 수출비율, 산업특성(조립산업 여부) 등을 고려하였다. 분석대상은 식료, 섬유, 화학, 비금속광물, 금속, 전기전자, 기계, 자동차, 조선 등 9개 업종이며, 2006-2009년 기간 동안 혼용자료(pooling data)를 사용하였다. 추정방법으로는 로지스틱 회귀분석(logistic regression analysis)을 활용하였다. 연구결과, 시장집중도는 산업의 단체표준화 활동에 아무런 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 분석되었다. 이는 독점적 시장일수록 소수의 대기업들이 공적 표준(de jure standards)인 단체표준보다는 '사실상의 표준(de facto standards)'에 더 관심을 가지고 있을 가능성을 보여준다. 시장구조 이외의 변수의 경우에는 기술적 기회와 조립산업 여부는 단체표준화 활동에 대해서 정(+)의 유의한 효과를 보인 반면, 자본집약도와 수출비율은 단체표준화와는 연관이 없는 것으로 분석되었다.

Hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of Leea asiatica leaves against acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

  • Leea asiatica (L.) Ridsdale, a folk medicinal plant is used by the ethnic people of North East India for the treatment of hepatic disorder. In this study, we have investigated the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of L. asiatica leaves against acetaminophen induced hepatotoxicity. Methanol extract of L. asiatica (150 and 300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) were administered to rats for three consecutive days followed by single acetaminophen (3000 mg/kg, p.o.) administration on $3^{rd}$ day. After 48 h of acetaminophen administration animals were sacrificed and biochemical estimation of serum, in vivo antioxidant activity using liver tissue were carried out. High levels of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, serum alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, total cholesterol and triglycerides were observed in disease control group, which found near to normal in extract treated groups. Higher dose exhibited significant hepatoprotective activity against acetaminophen induced toxicity. Level of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase in liver tissue, and reduced glutathione in liver and blood were also significantly increased in extract (300 mg/kg) treated animals compare to disease control group. In this study we found that leaves of L. asiatica exhibited potent hepatoprotective activity against acetaminophen induced hepatic damage in experimental animals which justify the folklore claim, and the possible mechanism of this activity may be due to strong antioxidant activities of extract.
