  • Paper tube industry for synthetic fiber packaging has approximately 200 billion won of market size in Korea, while any significant research has not done yet about physical characteristics of paper tubes. This study was conducted to find out a adequate structure of paper tubes by changing compositions of paperboards, size of tubes, and makers. Parallel compression strength was not only rely on compositions of paperboards, but also largely impacted by structural design of paper tubes.

  • The delignification, and optical and strength properties were determined to compare the ozone treatment effect in hardwood and softwood CTMPs. During ozone treatment, the delignificantion was much higher in hardwood pulp than in softwood pulp . The optical and strength properties which were very dependent upon the lignin content in pulp were significantly improved in the case of hardwood pulp . The ozone treatment of high yield pulp was more effective in hardwood pulp than that of softwood pulp.

  • Effects of the process variable in Condebelt press drying including drying temperature, pressure , drying time, and moisture content of the sheets on the paper properties were examined. The experiment was performed with a static rig and Korean OCC was used as raw material. Significant improvement in sheet density, compression strength, tensile strength, surface smoothness ,etc. was obtained when condebelt drying was applied. Control of pressure and inlet dryness was found to be two most critical variables in improving sheet properties.

  • KOCC pulp was fractionated by air froth flotation and the resultant accept was further treated with kneading. The study on the effect of this combination process revealed that the flotation and the successive kneading were found to be effective in improving strength and drainage properties as well optical cleanliness of testliner based on 100% KOCC.

  • Various properties of cotton handsheet were measured to solve the problem of deformation while storing guar gum(natural polymer) and to improve strength and retention by synthetic polymers(A-PAM, C-PAM, CMC). The results of this study were summarized as follow. The cotton handsheet with 0.2% of A-PAM showed the best tensile index and folding endurance. Retention of fines and fillers in pulp slurry with 0.2% and 0.3% of A-PAM were more excellent than that with guar gum.

  • The effect of several inorganic flame-retardants such as ammonium phosphate, ammonium sulfate, aluminum hydroxide and antimony trioxide on the flame-retardant property and tensile strength of paper has been investigated. Flame-retardants were used preferably as a dry powdered mixture and added to the furnish. Both dipping and coating treatments were employed to apply flame-retardants to paper Flame-retardant paper was manufactured by treatment of $5{\sim}30%$ flame-retardants by weight of the paper on a dry weight. Paper's flame-retardant property and tensile strength were examined by comparison of char length and tensile index. As dosages of flame-retardant chemicals increased, flame-retardant property was improved but tensile index was decreased.

  • Reducing the energy consumption while maintaining pulp quality is an important objective of today's paper industry. Enzymatic treatment of fibers and the application of dry strength agent were investigated as methods to reduce energy consumption during refining and to upgrade fiber characteristics. Modification of recycled fibers with an enzyme was effective in improving relining efficiency and reducing refining energy. Optimization of dry strength agent application conditions including stock pH, cationic demand, zeta potential, etc. were found to be very important for improving its effectiveness.

  • The surfaces of sheets added with N-chloro-polyacrylamide (N-Cl-PAM) are analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to clarify the chemical bonding involved in the paper strength development induced by N-Cl-PAM. The comparison of the observed N1s chemical shift of the sheet with those of the paper strength additives and the model compound, 1-butyryl-3-propyl urea, illustrated the presence of covalent bonds of alkyl acyl urea and urethane on the fiber surfaces. Thus the formation of the covalent bonds by N-Cl-PAM themselves and by N-Cl-PAM with cellulose and hemicellulose may be an explanation for much higher effectiveness of N-Cl-PAM on the improvement of wet strength of paper than A-PAM.

  • The stability and performance (peel strength) of the acrylic copolymer and various modified rosin systems were investigated. The peel strength was measured over a wide range of scaling rates, and the influence of the viscoelasticity of the PSA(pressure sensitive adhesive) was considered. In the case of miscible systems, the peak of peel strength (PSA performance) over wide peel rates was changed and modified systematically with increasing glass transition temperature of the blends. The peak of the peel strength for blended systems shifts toward the lower rate side as glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the blend increased. The influence of esterification of the rosin on performance and stability against deterioration was greatly modified by blending with rosin of glycerol ester and rosin pentaerythritol ester. The failure mode of the blend varies with the combination with acrylic copolymer and modified rosin, and cohesive failure was found at a lower peel rate while interfacial failure was found at a high peel rate. A few systems where a single Tg could be measured, despite the fact that two phases were observed microscopically, were detected.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm paper strengthening properties with recently commercialized polyvinylamine. Because of its high cationic charge density, polyvinylamine has been investigated as a size retention and surface coating aids. In this study, we tried to confirm polyvinylamine as wet-end additives to improve dry and wet strength using LBKP and BCTMP pulps. As a result, we found improvement of dry and wet tensile properties of polyvinylamine with BCTMP were much better than LBKP condition. This phenomena could be explained that ionic bonding of cationic charge of polyvinylamine with abundant anionic substances of BCTMP was a very important factor to improve dry and wet strength of paper.
