  • The genus Blacus Nees is cosmopolitan genus of the subfamily Blacinae. The members of genus Blacus endoparasites of colepterous larvae: Staphylinidae, Nitidulidae, Cryptophagidae, Scolytidae, Anobiidae, Curculionidae and Melyridae. Previously, 13 Korean species of the genus have been investigated by several researchers. In this study, eight species of the genus Blacus are reported for the first time from Korea: Blacus apaches Achterberg, B. chabarovi Belokobylskij, B. compressus Belokobylskij, B. fischeri Haeselbarth, B. interstitialis Ruthe, B. mamillanus Ruthe, B. robustus Haeselbarth, and B. ussuriensis Belokobylskij. Diagnosis and host records are given for each species.

  • Doryctinae is a large and heterogeneous group with more than 1,000 described. It is idiobiont ectoparasitoids on the larvae of wood-boring and xylophagous beetles. Some species attack larvae of wood boring lepidoptera. In the present study, fifteen species belonging to eight genera of the subfamily Doryctinae are recorded for the first time from Korea: Doryctes Haliday (2 species), Eodendrus Belokobylskij (1 species), Heterospilus Haliday (4 species), Monolexis Förster (1 species), Neurocrassus Snoflak (2 species), Rhoptrocentrus Marshall (1 species), Sonanus Belokobylskij et Konishi (1 species), Spathius Nees (3 speices). The genera Eodendrus Belokobylskij, Monolexis Förster, Rhoptrocentrus Marshall, Sonanus Belokobylskij et Konishi and fifteen species are reported for the first times from Korea. Diagnosis and host information are provided.

  • Upon studying the diversity of fungal endophytes associated with pine trees in Korea, many species of Penicillium were encountered. In this study, we report two species of Penicillium isolated from the needles of Pinus rigida. Based on ID region analysis, cultural and morphological characteristics, the two species were identified as Penicillium fellutanum and P. toxicarium, both of which are new to Korea.

  • Outwardly, the people in the shipping industry are aware that multicultural working environments and conditions could have a strong influence on the operation of ships. With a lack of cultural awareness and foreign language skill of crew members on ships, there are lots of misunderstandings and miscommunications among (cross-cultural) crews. More and more maritime accidents are caused by human error in the world's oceans. Nevertheless the research on cultural diversity and human interaction on ships is still in its infancy. Due to the rapid change of the demographic make-up of crews, not only teaching and training technical skills for the crews, but also education in nontechnical skills such as cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, intercultural competence is urgently needed. This study will deal with intercultural issues on ships. It aims to emphasize the necessity of intercultural training in MET.

  • The first zoeas of Chinese ditch prawn Palaemon gravieri (Yu, 1930) and carpenter shrimp Palaemon serrifer (Stimpson, 1860) are described and illustrated in detail based on laboratory-hatched material. They are distinguished from those of Palaemon ortmanni (Rathbun, 1902) and Palaemon pacificus (Stimpson, 1860), previously known larvae from Korean waters by the length of the rostrum and endopod of antenna, the shape of the third abdominal somite, and ornamentation of the fifth abdominal somite. Larval characters of the genus Palaemon are revised. A. provisional key to the known first zoeas of Palaemon from Korean waters is given.

  • Pelagic tunicate, Thetys vagina Tilesius, 1802, is newly reported from Korean waters. The genus Thetys Tilesius, 1802 is also first recorded as Korean fauna. Thetys vagina is the only valid species in the genus Thetys. It is distinct from other genera by having at least 16 body muscles widely interrupted, no anterior proboscis, bent alimentary canal in the solitary oozooid, and five narrow body muscles, no ventral peduncle, an almost compact loop alimentary canal in the aggregate blastozooids. The specimens of T. vagina examined in this study were collected at the subtidal zone of Ulleung-do Island by scuba diving. In this paper, the detailed descriptions and photographs of both the solitary and aggregate living forms of T. vagina are provided.

  • The seven unrecorded ciliates were collected from soil samples in Korea. The morphological study of these ciliates was performed based on observation of both living and stained cells: Rigidocortex quadrinucleatus Bharti, Kumar and La Terza, 2017, Rigidohymena tetracirrata (Gellért, 1942) Berger, 2011, Urosoma salmastra (Dragesco and Dragesco-Kernéis, 1986) Berger, 1999, Urosomoida agilis (Engelmann, 1862) Foissner, 1982, Rigidosticha italiensis Bharti, Kumar and La Terza, 2016, Eschaneustyla terricola Foissner, 1982 and Pseudokeronopsis similis (Stokes, 1886) Borror and Wicklow, 1983. Among the seven genera in this study, the genus Rigidosticha Bharti, Kumar and La Terza, 2016 is firstly reported in Korea. In this study, we provide brief descriptions and remarks for the ciliates with photographs.

  • The common rough woodlouse Porcellio scaber Latreille, 1804 is newly reported from South Korea with following diagnostic characteristics: the presence of distinct tubercles on body; the strongly developed lateral lobes of head; the presence of notch on tracheal field of pleopod 1 exopod; and distinctly short exopod of uropod. This species is reported to be cosmopolitan, but there were no taxonomic records of it in South Korea. All voucher specimens were collected from humid shaded areas adjacent to the eastern coast of South Korea. Organismal ecology and scanning electron microscope photographs are provided. In addition, the results of CO1 analysis of individuals representing the different color and morphological variations are provided.

  • In many urban cities, mixed-use development is becoming increasingly essential for the creation of an attractive and sustainable environment that promotes economic vitality, social equity and environmental quality. Due to the differences in scale, scope and intent, certain aspects within the project delivery process of mixed-use are not the same as "conventional" single-use projects. The objective of this paper is to highlight these aspects. Two cases in Southeast Asia serve to illustrate the uniqueness and challenges of mixed-use. In conclusion, the differences between mixed-use and single-use are evident in terms of the diversity of team members, the necessity of multiple market analyses, and a multi-layer (versus single-source) financing structure. Finally, issues concerning ownership tangles, land assembly, planning and application procedures, investment criteria of institutions have been identified as major pitfalls.
