  • In this study we analyzed the teaching units for the area of geometrical figures by the same method in the previous research of Kang, Wan and Kim, Nam Jun in 2010, where they extracted the teaching units based on the mathematics curriculum based on the theory of Wittmann (1984). Teaching units are a systematic organization of the essential contents for mathematics education according to 4 elements, objectives, data, functions, and backgrounds. In this study, the features and titles of the teaching units, extracted from the area of geometrical figures in revised mathematics curriculums in 2007, are analyzed and categorized as accepting of concept type, application of concept type, and acquiring of relation type. Their meanings for education are investigated, in addition, the way of their practical application to research of education for the area of geometrical figures. The teaching units are a model consistently compensated and evolved rather than fixed. It will be an important material for establishing new educational courses if the teaching units are more systematically studied by mathematics researchers and teachers in educational fields.

  • This research analyzes the elementary school mathematics curriculum in Korea in accordance with the teaching units devised by the German mathematics pedagogue, Wittmann(1984). Teaching units, a systematic teaching content organized according to the 4 elements of objectives, data, functions, and backgrounds, helps educators and professors plot for the systematic organization and structural understanding of the materials necessary in teaching. This research presents the extracting process of teaching units step by step based on the 2007 revised mathematics curriculum and also demonstrates the new alternative method to analyze and review the entire education courses through it. Teaching units is not immutable, but rather pursuing and developing a model that consistently through the constant complementary efforts by the research experts. On that account, many researchers and field professors continuously devote their efforts to develop and innovate it so that it can be practically used as an essential tool to establish a new mathematics curriculum.

  • The consistency and balance of objectives by objective domains in units, sub-units and instructional units were investigated. The 6th elementary biology curricular teaching guidebooks were analysed. Domains of objectives are cognitive, inquiry process, instrumental skill, creative, affective and STS. Cognitive objectives were most dominant in all units, sub-units and instructional units. But no objective for creative domain were suggested. In unit and sub-unit, proportions of objectives were cognitive, inquiry process, affective, instrumental skill and STS domains in order. Objectives for cognitive and inquiry process domains were more than others in instructional units, Except cognitive and inquiry process domains, objectives for the others were not consistent in all units, sub-units and instructional units. Especially, the percentages of objectives for affective domain decreased in units, sub-units and instructional units orderly. These resulted from teaching objective domains categorized formally, Thus, it is necessary to develope curriculum and textbook to be consistent and balanced with objective domains and reflect upon the characteristics of them.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of teaching strategies for scientific conceptions in the units of oxygen and combustion in elementary school science textbook. 70 elementary school 6th grade students in Seoul participated. They were divided into experimental group and controlled group. Five scientific concepts were adopted from the units of oxygen and combustion in the 6th grade science textbook. Subjects' preconceptions were investigated by pre-questionnaires. A series of 6 instructional sessions based on the teaching strategy of cognitive confliction theory were given to the experimental group. By the end of the instructional session, a post-test was administered to both experimental and controlled groups. There was a statistically significant difference between post-test gains of the experimental and controlled groups. These results support the notion that the teaching strategy was effective for changing from preconceptions to scientific concerts.

  • In this paper, we develop a logarithm units' teaching learning materials using genetic modeling which is designed for students to construct by themselves and figure out mathematical knowledge conceptually, and we analyze the process of students' comprehension of logarithm concepts through genetic modeling activities. For this purpose, we divide logarithm units into three subunits and develop teaching learning materials which include genetic original contexts and are framed by the four pedagogic phases of genetic modeling, application, extraction, comprehension, and construction so that students themselves are capable of construct the concepts of logarithm units. The developed teaching learning materials are applied into lessons for two intermediate-basic students and two intermediate-advanced students. Through this, we examine students' conceptual construction process about logarithms units with the four pedagogical stages of genetic modeling applied, and analyze the depth of their comprehension about the logarithm units based on the general phases of mathematics-learning introduced by van Hiele, and then we suggest several pedagogical implications.

  • In this study, a teaching units for teaching and learning of secondary preservice teachers' mathematising is designed, focusing on reinvention of Bretschneider's formula. preservice teachers can obtain the following through this teaching units. First, preservice teachers can experience mathematising which invent a noumenon which organize a phenomenon, They can make an experience to invent Bretscheider's formula as if they invent mathematics really. Second, preservice teachers can understand one of the mechanisms of mathematics knowledge invention. As they reinvent Brahmagupta's formula and Bretschneider's formula, they understand a mechanism that new knowledge is invented Iron already known knowledge by analogy. Third, preservice teachers can understand connection between school mathematics and academic mathematics. They can understand how the school mathematics can connect academic mathematics, through the relation between the school mathematics like formulas for calculating areas of rectangle, square, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid and Heron's formula, and academic mathematics like Brahmagupta's formula and Bretschneider's formula.

  • The objective of this paper is to design teaching units to foster secondary pre-service teachers' mathematising abilities. In these teaching units we focus on generalizing area of a 2-dimensional triangle and volume of a 3-dimensional tetrahedron to n-volume of n-simplex In this process of generalizing, principle of the permanence of equivalent forms and Cavalieri's principle are applied. To find n-volume of n-simplex, we define n-orthogonal triangular prism, and inquire into n-volume of it. And we find n-volume of n-simplex by using vectors and determinants. Through these teaching units, secondary pre-service teachers can understand and inquire into n-simplex which is generalized from a triangle and a tetrahedron, and n-volume of n-simplex which is generalized from area of a triangle and volume of a tetrahedron. They can also promote natural connection between school mathematics and academic mathematics.
