Problem-Based Learning(PBL) is at the forefront of educational reform. The acceptance of PBL as an educational approach with wide application represents a major change in thinking about educational processes and their relationships to the wider community. In 1969, PBL as a method was introduced at the Medical School of McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. The most important advantages in PBL are acquiring knowledge that can be retrieved and applied, learning to learn(self-directed learning) and learning to analyze and solve Problems. PBL is widely used within the sector where it had its origin, namely health profession education. A generally accepted starting point in the development of a problem-based curriculum is the set of professional competencies of future graduates, which describe the typical problems professionals have to deal with. Formulating learning objectives highly depends on the format and content of the presented problems. Contrary to that, in a classic course in higher education, it is customary that teachers express objectives in a compulsory subject matter. Curricula which advocate problem-based learning generally use case studies in the form of paper cases, simulations and real patients with the intention of stimulating classroom discussion of clinical and basic science concepts within a problem-solving framework. One goal of using paper cases is to stimulate the learning of basic science within a clinical situation. Through self-directed study the students solve problems and explore the psycho-social dimensions within the cases. The general outcome based on the program evaluation research of PBL is that PBL students respond positively about the learning experience. In summary, PBL is a curriculum design and a teaching/learning strategy which simultaneously develops higher order thinking and disciplinary knowledge bases and skills by placing students in the active role of practitioners(or problem solvers) confronted with a situation(ill-structured problem) which reflects the real world.
This study has explored the trajectory of the development and diffusion of the CTLs in the Korean universities by using isomorphism theory of neo-institutionalism. Neo-institutional theorists believe that organizational structure and behavior reflects the norms and values recognized in the society rather than the organization's autonomous and rational choices. Based on the isomorphism framework, the introduction and diffusion of the CTLs in the Korean universities have been led by the government. In addition, the CTLS(Korean Association of Center for Teaching & Learning) has served as a direct basis for the normative pressures. In other words, the CTLs have been securing devices for the universities to acquire external justification by the environment, and they have been able to confirm that the system was isomorphed, in particular by meeting and agreeing with the government-set university evaluation criteria. Efforts should be made to develop unique values and strategies that enable CTLs to become engines of the development of university education in response to rapid changes in the academic environment.
This study was conducted with the aim to develop and improve the assessment literacy of teachers which enables it to develop and utilize the assessment items using a wide range of contexts on the basis of an understanding of math contents and mathematical process specified in the math curriculum and to analyze the results in an effective way. To analyze the changes in the development and improvement of the assessment literacy of preservice math teachers, the author of this study, using PISA items and assessment framework, analyzed the changes through the 1st and 2nd development of assessment items. The results showed the assessment literacy of preservice math teachers and their ability have been improved, implying that there is the necessity to develop a wide range of programs to improve the assessment literacy of preservice math teachers and provide such programs on a regular basis, which will facilitate effective math teaching and learning.
The purpose of this study was to examine UK students' use of multimodal representations in science. Students were asked to explain their understandings of the scientific concept and presentation of the multimodal representations in a science Assessing Pupils' Progress (APP) task. Participants of this study were fifty-four Year 7 students taught by the same teacher. Students from one class (27 students) were assigned to the experimental group, and then they received instruction encouraging the using of multimodal representations as evidences to support students' claims. One class (27 students) was assigned to the control group and they received instruction with traditional teaching methods. Both groups performed an APP task for assessment. The samples of APP assessments produced by students both from the experimental and control groups were analyzed using an analysis framework of multimodal representations, embeddedness in evidence and understanding of scientific concepts. Data analysis indicated that the students in the experimental group performed better than that of the control group on embeddedness of multimodal representations in the APP task. In addition, there was a significant difference between the two groups in the evaluation of understand of the scientific concepts.
Using computer technology in teaching school mathematics creates new instructional environments. The emphases on the use of computer technology in the classrooms and in particular the use of computer-based exploration as a context of mathematics instruction have been reflected in the recommendation of the NCTM (Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, 1989). Although the power of using computer technology in the exploration of mathematical problems has been recognized and stressed by many educators, we do not have many research studies on mathematics in computer-based explorations. Especially research has failed to clarify how computer technology can contribute to the construction of procedural and conceptual knowledge of mathematics. Up to now most researches on procedural and conceptual knowledge in computer environments have only focused on classifying programming languages which program language has more random access and rich interrelationship characteristic in relation to conceptual knowledge in humans, and which computer language has more characteristic flavor of procedural knowledge. How computer-based explorations affect the knowledge construction of mathematics, therefore, emerges as an issue of research on teacher education program for theoretical framework. This situation leads to do research on the effectiveness of using computer explorations in pre-service teacher education in terms of procedural and conceptual knowledge construction.

Big ideas are overarching principles that help students to build a holistic understanding of domain-specific knowledge and assimilate individual facts and theories. This study aims to design a standard-based integrated science curriculum framework based on Big Ideas. The core contents were extracted by analysing the 2009 National Science Standards curriculum of primary and middle schools. Four Big Ideas, 'diversity,' 'structure,' 'interaction,' and 'change,' were generated after the process of examination and categorization of core contents. The scientific facts, disciplinary concepts, and interdisciplinary concepts of every scientific domains included in each Big Idea are represented as a knowledge pyramid. Essential questions guiding the direction of curriculum design were proposed on each Big idea. Based on the framework, teaching modules for 'structure' were developed for grades 5~6.
This study aimed to investigate the current status of faculty development (FD) programs operated by medical colleges and institutions in Korea, and to suggest future-oriented directions for FD. A survey was conducted targeting medical colleges and medical education institutions that operate FD programs. We investigated the reasons for selecting topics, program themes, program operation methods, longitudinal program status, program improvement and quality control methods, the evaluation of the program effects, the outcomes and problems of the programs, and opinions on the latest trends. Twenty-nine out of 40 medical colleges and three out of six institutions responded. Topics were selected based on an analysis of medical education trends and the educational environment in both groups. The most common program themes were assessments in medical colleges, and teaching/learning and curriculum themes in institutions. FD was perceived to induce professors' and administrators' interest in medical education and improve the quality of medical education. The most common program method was workshops. Three medical colleges and one institution had longitudinal programs. Participant surveys constituted the most common method of evaluating programs' effects. Difficulties in publicizing programs and inducing voluntary participation were the most common problems in both groups. New attempts for FD were perceived as the role of external institutions. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop a framework and quality improvement indications for FD programs in the future, and FD programs are expected to be developed through new initiatives, such as longitudinal programs and those focusing on the community of practice.

The purpose of this study was to point out the problems of the competency exam for college education, a new college entrance exam, and to suggest the improvement ideas for it For this purpose, the test items of science inquiry were taken from the first, the second and the third pilot studies of the competency exam for college education which National Institute of Educational Evaluation had done. These tests were administered to 1,223 students of the general high school(422 for the 1st 400 for the 2nd, and 401 for the 3rd test). Also, those students' and the high school science teacher's opinions about the tests and the new college entrance exam were surveyed. The evaluation objectives of those test items were analyzed and the test item analyses were done. The results were as follows; (1) The evaluation objective analysis showed that most of the test The purpose of this study was to point out the problems of the competency exam for college education, a new college entrance exam, and to suggest the improvement ideas for it For this purpose, the test items of science inquiry were taken from the first, the second and the third pilot studies of the competency exam for college education which National Institute of Educational Evaluation had done. The evaluation objectives of those test items were analyzed and the test item analyses were done. The results were as follows; (1) The evaluation objective analysis showed that most of the test items were constructed based on the evaluation framework which was composed of scientific inquiry thinking ability, science concept, and scientific inquiry context dimensions. But, those items were unevenly distributed into a few areas of the evaluation framework. (2) The boys had higher mean scores than the girls in all of the tests, but these differences were not statistically significant. The natural science course students had significantly higher mean than the humanities course students in all of the test:(1st, F=12.643, p=0.0004 ; 2nd, F=45.757, p=0.0001 ; 3rd, F=36.162, p=0.0001). A significant interaction of sex and course was found in only 1st test( F=11.352. p=0.0008). (3) Most students answered the test was difficult and they needed more time to finish it Also, they added they had to study in a different way from the traditional one in order to prepare the new college entrance exam. Science teachers answered that those evaluation objectives of the tests corresponded well with the educational objectives of high school science and that the tests were suitable as measuring instruments of the scientific thinking abilities. But they pointed out it would be very difficult for them to teach students for preparing the exam under the exsting educational conditions. To carry out successfully the competency exam for college education, the following improvements were suggested. (1) Good evaluation methodology should be developed. (2) In-service science teacher training models on evaluation should be put in force. (3) Effective teaching models and strategies should be developed.(4) The high school science curriculum should be revised.

This study analyzed cases of teaching consulting in the cyber university field and activated it in a remote university in the right direction to contribute to the development of high quality contents. This study analyzed the instructional consulting data of the Center for Content Quality Management at A Cyber University in Chungnam area and interviewed researchers working at the center using the phenomenological approach based on the data. This study showed that the professors participating in instructional consulting had many problems, but they were relatively active in improving the quality of the lectures. They wanted to know the teaching methods in the unfamiliar environment of remote universities. In addition, the researchers had difficulty in delivering feedback to the instructor through the process of exploring images taken several times with the objective framework of lecture evaluation. To allow better communication, it was necessary to form rapport between the instructor and researcher. Unlike general universities, cyber universities have features and limitations in that they only take cameras in the classroom without learners and proceed with class consulting. Therefore, the teachers have a feeling of burden about shooting and recording, but they are less than general university teachers, and are more willing to engage in class consultation more actively. In this study, the results of the research was discussed and the proposal of cyber universities' instruction consulting and the effective plan is proposed.
Along with concerns about deteriorating social and economic status of teachers around the world, Master Teacher System(MTS) has been considered as one of the alternatives to transform teaching profession into a more attractive job. In this study, the conditions and problems associated with the MTS in China is analyzed to draw implications for South Korea, which recently legalized the MTS. Research framework including four research questions is developed based on the controversies surrounding MTS of South Korea. The main findings show that the MTS in China was introduced to improve teachers' social and economic status along with the quality of prospective teachers. A very small number of master teachers are selected through rigorous standards including longer service period. They are given additional monetary and non-monetary compensations in return for their teaching-learning leadership and responsibilities. As highly respected educators, they enjoy the lifelong benefits, although they are annually evaluated. It is evident that the MTS has contributed to improving the attractiveness of teaching profession in China. Nevertheless, there are many problems associated with selection standards and methods of master teachers, their roles, compensation, evaluation and terms of service. Recent criticism due to changing circumstances surrounding education in China makes the MTS more questionable. Based on the findings, major implications for future directions of MTS of South Korea are drawn and suggested.
