Background: Endophytic fungi play an important role in balancing the ecosystem and boosting host growth. In the present study, we investigated the endophytic fungal diversity of healthy Panax notoginseng and evaluated its potential antimicrobial activity against five major phytopathogens causing root-rot of P. notoginseng. Methods: A culture-dependent technique, combining morphological and molecular methods, was used to analyze endophytic fungal diversity. A double-layer agar technique was used to challenge the phytopathogens of P. notoginseng. Results: A total of 89 fungi were obtained from the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of P. notoginseng, and 41 isolates representing different morphotypes were selected for taxonomic characterization. The fungal isolates belonged to Ascomycota (96.6%) and Zygomycota (3.4%). All isolates were classified to 23 genera and an unknown taxon belonging to Sordariomycetes. The number of isolates obtained from different tissues ranged from 12 to 42 for leaves and roots, respectively. The selected endophytic fungal isolates were challenged by the root-rot pathogens Alternaria panax, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Phoma herbarum, and Mycocentrospora acerina. Twenty-six of the 41 isolates (63.4%) exhibited activity against at least one of the pathogens tested. Conclusion: Our results suggested that P. notoginseng harbors diversified endophytic fungi that would provide a basis for the identification of new bioactive compounds, and for effective biocontrol of notoginseng root rot.
Large patch, caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 IV, is a soil-born disease that is the most important of warm season turfgrass such as zoysia and Bermuda grass. This study was conducted to analysis of the soil microbial community structure on large patch. Center of the large patch (CLC), edge (CLE) and healthy (CLH) part of microbial communities were examined using metagenomics in Phylum level. Distribution trends of the rhizosphere microorganisms were similar to the order Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospira, Cyanobactria and Verrucomicrobia in soil collections. Contrastively Actinobacteria was more 56% abundant in healthy part soil (16%) than in the center (9.28%) or edge (10.84%) parts. Taxonomic distributions were compared among the CLC, CLE and CLH, total 6,948 OTUs were detected in the CLC, 6,505 OTUs for the CLE and 5,537 OTUs were detected in the CLE. Distributions of Actinobacteria OTUs were appeared 615 OTUs in the CLC, 709 OTUs in the CLE and 891 OTUs in the CLH. Among Actinobacteria, 382 OTUs were overlapped in the all soils. Not matched OTUs of CLH (286 OTUs) was detected 23 times higher than CLC (91 OTUs) and CLE (126 OTUs).
In this study, we analyzed the densities and taxonomic characteristics of various microorganisms that play important roles in Agaricus bisporus culture medium composting, and examined changes in the levels of decomposition-related enzymes secreted by these microorganisms. Various microorganisms such as thermophilic bacteria, actinomycetes, fluorescent Pseudomonas spp., and filamentous bacteria are closely associated with culture medium composts of Agaricus bisporus. The population densities of microorganisms change, and harmful bacteria disappear during thermophilic composting. Psychrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp., and Pseudoxanthomonas sp. accounted for the highest proportion of bacteria in the culture media during outdoor composting, whereas Bacillus sp. and Psychrobacillus sp. were dominant after pasteurization. Cellulose and hemicellulose enzymes of the microorganisms were important at an early stage of rice straw composting and after decomposition of carbon sources, respectively. Microorganisms that secreted these enzymes were present in the second and third turning stage of composting.
This study was made as a part of the benethic fauna of Geojedo Island. The material was obtained from 17 localities (Fig. 1) along the coastal sea of Geojedo Island and it's adjacent waters during the years 1995-1998. This paper includes 38 species from a limited area of the southern part of Korea and includes 13 previously known species by Rho(1975-1991). Of these Didemnum (D.) pardum, Symplegma oceania, and Styela coriacea, are new to the Korean fauna, and 22 species are newly added to the fauna of Geojedo Island. We provided taxonomic notes and brief notes on the ascidian fauna, and the biogeographical distribution of Geojedo island. Its ascidian fauna are characterized by a high percentage of 18(47.4%) warm-water species and the extreme scarcity of eight(21.1%) boreal-water forms. This result may be attributable to the fact that Geojedo island and its adajacent waters are located under the influence of the warm Kuroshio Current.

The purpose of this study is to describe and compare the morphological characteristics of seeds of 12 taxa of Araliaceae, and to evaluate their possible use for taxonomic considerations. For light microscope observations and measurements, the seeds were observed using Image Analyzing System. The observations were made on twenty randomly selected seeds of each species. Obtained data were statistically processed using analysis of variance. Principal Components Analysis indicated four groups of characters, the genera Aralia, Eleutherococcus, Panax and the others, which explained 65.47% of the total variation. As a results of Cluster Analysis using the eleven variables, 12 species of Araliaceae were also discriminated into four groups. Eleutherococcus senticosus and E. gracilistylus were closely related, which is well supported by the results from recent molecular studies. Also, the genera Dendropanax and Eleutherococcus were closely related in terms of seed characters.
According to the character states of nostrils in the Barbatula species comprising 1,366 specimens collected from the major river system in Korea, distribution pattern of the two Korean Barbatula species was reviewed. The taxonomic character related to nostrils in Barbatula was very stable and two character states (widely separated and closely set) were observed in the present materials. B. toni (Dybowski, 1869) with widely separated nostrils distributes in the streams flowing into the East Sea north of Sokcho, Gangwon-do Province; Eogokcheon Stream, a tributary of Namhangang River; and Anseongcheon Stream, Gyeonggi-do Province, whereas B. nuda (Bleeker, 1864) with closely set occurs in most rivers flowing into the Yellow Sea including Nakdonggang River as well as in the Yangyangnamdaecheon Stream, Gangwon-do Province south to Bangyulcheon Stream, Gyeongbukdo Province, flowing into the East Sea as previously reported with some exception. Especially, both Barbatula species were co-occurred in the Yeongokcheon Stream, Gangwon-do Province and Eogokcheon Stream. The present results will provide a useful guide to study the regional fish fauna or fish community analysis as well as to clarify the taxonomical status of the Korean Barbatula species.

Hanon made in the largest maar crater in Korea, is the only paddy field ecosystem in Jeju Island that has been conducting rice farming, for the past 500 years. Flora surveys were conducted eight times, 2015-2018, to understand floristic characteristics and a restoration plan of the study area. As a result, vascular plants of Hanon paddy fields were listed 225 taxa that consist of 55 families, 151 genera, 194 species, 1 subspecies, 25 varieties, and 4 forms. The taxonomic group including the most species, was Gramineae (36 taxa). The next families were Compositae (29 taxa), Cyperaceae (20), Leguminosae (13), and Polygonaceae (11). Biological type of the Hanon was $Th-R_5-D_4-t$ type. The rare plants revealed 3 taxa; Ottelia alismoides(L.) Pers., Acorus calamus L., Pseudoraphis ukishiba Ohwi. Endemic plant revealed 1 taxon; Saururus chinensis(Lour.) Baill. Forty three taxa were naturalized plants composed of 15 families, 24 genera, 41 species, and 2 varieties. The urbanization index and naturalized index were 13.3% and 16.9%, respectively. The Hanon has high plant diversity, including endemic plant and rare plants, and is the only rice paddy in Jeju Island. So, the Hanon has sufficient values in ecological and socio-cultural aspects, so it should be maintained continuously in the future.
This study is to observe species identification and early life history of Gnathopogon strigatus and to use it as a basis for taxonomic studies and conservation of species. For the experiments, the mature adults were collected at the Wang-suk Stream located in Namyang-ju city, Gyeong-gi Province and eggs were artificially fertilized by the wet method in the laboratory. The shape of the fertilized egg was globular, adhesive, opaque white in color and had no oil globules. The fertilized egg was 1.66~1.88 mm (average 1.76 mm, n=30) in diameter. The blastular stage occurred at 3 hours 05 minutes after fertilization and the gastrular stage was detected at 8 hours 30 minutes after fertilization. The embryo began to hatch about 54 hrs after fertilization under water temperature of $23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and the newly hatched larva (yolksac larva) were 4.1~4.7 mm (mean 4.4 mm, n=20) in total length (TL). The fourth day after hatching, the postlarva were 5.4~5.9 mm (mean 5.6 mm, n=20) in total length, their york sacs were completely absorbed and Start eating Artemia sp. Ten days after hatching, flexion larva were begins Notochord flexion were 7.5~8.6 mm (mean 8.1 mm, n=20) in total length. Sixteenth day after hatching, postflexion larva were complete Notochord flexion were 8.2~9.7 mm (mean 9.1 mm, n=20) in total length. At thirty-eight days after hatching, Juvenile were arrive integer all fin rays and similar to those of adults were 11.3~15.5 mm (mean 13.3 mm, n=20) in total length.

The study was conducted to compare the chemical properties and microbial activity of soil and the crop productivity by applying homemade liquid fertilizers (LF) used in leading cucumber farms as well as to evaluate the eco-friendly LFs to substitute for a chemical fertilizer. Three homemade LFs, EM, starfish, and native microbes, and a chemical LF were regularly fertigated per three days during the growing season. Chemical LF contained the highest pH, EC (electrical conductivity), and concentrations of T-N, $P_2O_5$, K, Ca, and Mg, while the lowest EC level was observed for EM LF. Soil EC was the highest to the 3.0 dS/m for chemical LF-plots, with lowering soil pH, OM (organic matter), and Mg concentration. Soil chemical properties mostly increased in native microbes LF-plots. However, soil microbial properties were not significantly different among the LF treatment plots. OTU (operational taxonomic units), richness estimator, and diversity index of bacteria and fungi increased in the chemical LF and EM LF based on the pyrosequencing analysis. SPAD and PS II values on the treated-cucumber leaves were seasonally decreased from 32 to 60 days after transplanting, with the rapid decline observed at 45 days after transplanting. Number of leaves and crop height increased in the treatments with EM and native microbes LF. LF treated-cucumber crops were not significantly different for total fresh weight and fruit yield.

We analyzed food sources of 45 fish species in 28 genera of 12 families based on literature data in freshwater ecosystems of South Korea. The food sources of 45 fish species included in a total of 26 phyla, 42 classes, 94 orders, 189 families and 294 genera. Among them, animal food sources were 16 phyla, 24 classes, 54 orders, 126 families and 212 genera, whereas plant food sources were relatively small with 10 phyla, 18 classes, 42 orders, 63 families and 82 genera. The animal food sources were classified into Arthropod, Insecta, Diptera and Chironomidae according to taxa. Meanwhile, Bacillariophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Cymbellales and Cymbellaceae were the most abundant among the plant sources. Self-Organized Map (SOM) and network analysis were conducted the food sources were classified into taxonomic groups and the feeding types of fish : 45 fish species were divided into five groups, characterizing 1) fishvores, 2) invertebratevores, planktivores including 3) zooplankton and 4) phytoplankton, and 5) omnivores. The network analysis presented link association between fishes and food sources. Macroinvertebrate including diptera and ephemeroptera were revealed as hub food sources based on network analysis. This literature study would expect that the application model with the food source of fish could be utilized for the evaluation of the food network or chain in freshwater ecosystems.
