  • The diversity of the genus Megacollybia in Korea was examined based on morphological observation and analysis of molecular data. Currently, the genus is consisted of nine species with a global distribution. However, only M. platyphylla has been reported in the floral survey of Korea. During our re-evaluation of the taxonomic diversity of Megacollybia in Korea, six Megacollybia specimens collected in 2012 were identified based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and morphology. Here, we report two Megacollybia species, M. clitocyboidea and M. marginata, as newly recorded species from Korea. The microscopic features of the two species are provided in this study. To our knowledge, this is the first phylogenetic analysis of Korean Megacollybia species.

  • A taxonomic study of Korean Berosus Leach is presented. Four species [Berosus (Berosus) japonicus Sharp, Berosus (Berosus) punctipennis Harold, Berosus (Enoplurus) lewisius Sharp, and Berosus (Enoplurus) spinosus (Steven)] in two subgenera are recognized, one of which [B. (E.) spinosus] is reported for the first time in Korea. We also found that B. (B.) puchellus MacLeay previously recorded in Korea was an incorrect identification of B. (E.) lewisius Sharp. Habitus and SEM photographs, key and diagnoses of the known species are provided.

  • The psocids of Korea are reviewed based on museum collections and recently collected material. To date, only 14 species of 7 families in 3 suborders (Trogiomorpha, Troctomorpha and Psocomorpha) of Psocoptera have been recorded. In the present study, 10 additional species belonging to 2 suborders [Troctomorpha] Amphientomidae: Ancylentomus macrourus (Li, 1997); [Psocomorpha] Amphipsocidae: Amphipsocus japonicus (Enderlein, 1906), Caeciliusidae: Valenzuela oyamai (Enderlein, 1906), Paracaecilius japonicus (Enderlein, 1906), Stenopsocidae: Cubipilis aphidiformis (Enderlein, 1906), Stenopsocus immaculatus (Stephens, 1836), Peripsocidae: Peripsocus didymus Roesler, 1939, Psocidae: Amphigerontia anchorae Li, 2002, Psococerastis tokyoensis (Enderlein, 1906) and Trichadenopsocus alternatus Li, 2002, were found to occur in Korea for the first time. Adult morphology, taxonomic diagnosis and photographs of diagnostic characters of the newly recorded species in Korea are provided.

  • The molecular taxonomic relationship of nine species in the genus Moniliella Stolk & Dakin and Trichosporonoides Haskins & Spencer and six species of other yea나-like fungi was examined by sequencing analysis of large subunit rDNA D1/D2 variable domain. The fifteeen species fell into two major groups corresponding with their genetic relationships. The nine species of the genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides were placed at the same cluster. similarity values based on the D1/D2 domain sequences were 45.4-100% among species of genus Moniliella, 45.2-84.4% among genus Trichosporonoides species, and 45.6-90.1% among species of genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides. Identical sequence similarity was observed between M. suaveolens var. nigra and M. suaveolens. A colse relationship of M. mellis. and M. acetoabutens is observed. The result of this study provided and insight into the genetic origins of genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides species as well as their genetic relationships. Genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides are closely related to each other based on sequence analysis of the large subunit rDNA D1/D2 region and we suggest combination of the genus Moniliella and Trichosporonoides to single genus.

  • The general morphological characters of Lysimchia sect. Spicatae were reviewed. From the results, numerical analyses were conducted based on 34 morphological characters from 14 populations of three species in Korea in order to investigate the key characters among the treated taxa and taxonomic delimitation and to discuss the systematic relationship. Habitat, leaf apices, presence or absent of hair on leaves, stipules, stems and bracts, branch of stems, kind of hair on floral axis and pedicels, shape of florescens were important diagnostic characters to identify the species. The relationship between Lysimachia clethoides and L. barystachys was more close than that of L. fortunei based on the quantitative characters. Also, a new key was made up from the result.

  • This study was carried out to reveal the taxonomic status of the two mullets, Chelon affinis and Chelon haematocheilus from Korea by comparison of their morphological characteristics. Chelan affinis, occurred in the southern coastal area, is a distinct species characterized by having a keel on the middorsal line in front of the spinous dorsal fin. However, Chelon haematocheilus, found in the all coastal areas of Korea excluding Cheju island is easily distinguished from the former in having the deep flat head. By comparison of five groups of Chelan haematocheilus, Kunsan group is slightly differed from others in the height of anal fin and caudal peduncle length. Although Chelon affinis is similar with Chelan haematocheilus in the view of meristic characters, they are distinguished from each other in the number of pyloric caeca and lateral line scales.

  • Hevea brasiliensis is a natural source of rubber and an important plantation tree species in Malaysia. Leaf blight disease caused by Fusicoccum substantially reduces the growth and performance of H. brasiliensis. The aim of this study was to use a combination of both morphological characteristics and molecular data to clarify the taxonomic position of the fungus associated with leaf blight disease. Fusicoccum species were isolated from infected leaves collected from plantations at 3 widely separated locations - Selangor, Perak, and Johor states - in Peninsular Malaysia in 2010. All the isolates were identified according to their conidial patterns and DNA sequences generated from internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2), the 5.8S rRNA, and an unknown locus (BotF15) containing microsatellite repeats. Based on taxonomic and sequence data, Neofusicoccum ribis was identified as the main cause of leaf blight disease in H. brasiliensis in commercial plantations in Malaysia. A pathogenicity trial on detached leaves further confirmed that N. ribis causes leaf blight disease. N. ribis is an important leaf pathogen, and its detection in Malaysia has important implications for future planting of H. brasiliensis.
