  • This is to report of a case of bilateral taurodontism of mandibular right & left 1st deciduous molars of 4 year-old female. Taurodontism is a morphologic condition of tooth, it seems to be caused by delayed or incomplete union of horizontal epithelial flaps of the epithelial diaphragm. This union is necessary in order to initiate dentinogenesis in the bifurcation area.

  • The incidence and associated dental abnormalities of taurodontism were studied radiographically (panoramic view) in 1895 patients of deciduous dentition and 2167 patients of permanent dentition who had visited to the Department of Oral Radiology, Kyung Hee University in Korea. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of taurodontism was 3.59% in the deciduous dentition group, and 1.8% in the permanent dentition group. 2. There was no definite sex difference in the deciduous dentition, and the permanent dentition group. The type of mesotaurodontism was predominent in the deciduous dentition group, and hypotaurodontism in the permanent dentition group. 4. The vast majority of this abnormalities had occurred in the mandibular 1st deciduous molar in the deciduous dentition group, and mandibular 2nd permanent molar in the permanent dentition group. 5. Of the cases with taurodontism, the deciduous dentition group revealed 95.6% bilaterally, and 82% bilaterally in the permanent dentition group. 6. Multiple teeth occurance, not single tooth only, were involved in 98.5% of the cases in the deciduous dentition group, and 82% in the permanent dentition group.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and distribution according to the types of tooth shape anomalies in permanent teeth of 6,082 persons by means of analysis of the full mouth periapical radiographs. And the following results were obtained ; 1. Among tooth shape anomalies, the highest incidence was observed on dilaceration (20.14%), foll owed by dens invaginatus(3.02%), peg lateralis(1.48%), taurodontism (0.34%), dens evaginatus (0.33%), talon cusp(0.20%), fusion(0.07%) and gemination(0%) in descending order of frequency. 2. Peg lateralis, dens invaginatus and dilaceration occurred more prevalent in females, and other types of tooth shape anomalies occurred more prevalent in males. 3. Dens evaginatus and taurodontism occurred with bilateral tendency, but other anomalies occur- ed with unilateral tendency. 4. As to the involved teeth, maxillary lateral incisors were the most frequently involved teeth on peg lateralis, dens invaginatus and talon cusp. And the mandibular premolars were the most frequently involved teeth on dens evaginatus, the maxillary first molars were on taurodontism, the maxillary second premolars were on dilaceration, and the mandibular incisors and canines were on fusion.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of all types and subtypes of dental anomalies among 7- to 35-year-old patients by using panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1649 people in Hamadan City, in 2012-2013. The prevalence of four types and 12 subtypes of dental anomalies was evaluated by two observers separately by using panoramic radiography. Dental anomalies were divided into four types: (a) shape (including fusion, taurodontism, and dens invagination); (b) number (including hypodontia, oligodontia, and hyperdontia); (c) structure (including amelogenesis imperfecta, dentinogenesis imperfecta, and dentin dysplasia); and (d) position (including displacement, impaction, and dilacerations). Results: The reliability between the two observers was 79.56% according to the Kappa statistics. The prevalence of dental anomalies diagnosed by panoramic radiographs was 29%. Anomalies of position and number were the most common types of abnormalities, and anomalies of shape and structure were the least in both genders. Anomalies of impaction (44.76%), dilacerations (21.11%), hypodontia (15.88%), taurodontism (9.29%), and hyperdontia (6.76%) were the most common subtypes of dental anomalies. The anomalies of shape and number were more common in the age groups of 7-12 years and 13-15 years, respectively, while the anomalies of structure and position were more common among the other age groups. Conclusion: Anomalies of tooth position were the most common type of dental anomalies, and structure anomalies were the least in this Iranian population. The frequency and type of dental anomalies vary within and between populations, confirming the role of racial factors in the prevalence of dental anomalies.

  • Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome is a non-inherited rare condition that presents during childhood and is characterized by seizures, hemiplegia, mental retardation, cerebral hemiatrophy, calvarial thickening, and hyperpneumatization of the frontal sinuses. The present article highlights a case of a 12-year-old male child with additional clinical findings of $caf{\acute{e}}$-au-late pigmentation and ocular lipodermoid. This is the first case report of DykeDavidoff-Masson syndrome to describe oral manifestations, such as unilateral delayed eruption of teeth, hypoplasia, and taurodontism, which could be unique and characteristic of this condition. Oral health care providers and physicians should be aware of these oral observations as dental referrals could warrant early dental prophylactic care and can be useful in diagnosing the possible time of injury and type of Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome.

  • The author detected rare taurodontisms shown in full mouth standard films of a 21-years-old male patient for the chief complaint of hypersensitivity caused by cervical area to cold and came to the folloeing conclusions through an asthropolpgical and geographic study. 1. Anomaly of this kind was also found ina korean, a mongoloid descent. 2. This study shaw that two cases of hypertaurodont molars and nine cases of hypotaurodont molars were found in one single patient. 3. No particular relationship was found between the occurrence of dental caries and the anomaly of this kind. 4. The genetical study on the case was out of the question because the family of the patient did not offer co-operation.
