  • This paper is concerned with flow shop scheduling problems having the common due date. V-shape property is used for algorithms with early and tardy penalty cost. The objective of this paper is developing efficient heuristic scheduling algorithms for minimizing total penalty cost function and determining the optimal common due date. The between job delay and the work in process are considered for developing algorithms as penalty cost. Algorithms is simulated to analyze interrelated factors. A numerical example is given for illustrating the proposed algorithms.

  • This paper considers a two-stage hybrid flow shop scheduling problem for the objective of minimizing the number of tardy jobs. Each job is processed through the two production stages in stages, each of which has multiple identical parallel machines. The problem is to determine the allocation and sequence of jobs at each stage. A branch and bound algorithm that gives the optimal solutions is suggested that incorporates the methods to obtain the lower and upper bounds. Dominance properties are also suggested to reduce the search space. To show the performance of the algorithm, computational experiments are done on randomly generated problems, and the results are reported.

  • In this research, emergency vehicle dispatching problems faced with in the wake of massive natural disasters are considered. Here, the emergency vehicle dispatching problems can be regarded as a single machine stochastic scheduling problems, where the processing times are independently and identically distributed random variables, are considered. The objective of minimizing the expected number of tardy jobs, with distinct job due dates that are independently and arbitrarily distributed random variables, is dealt with. For these problems, optimal static-list policies can be found by solving corresponding assignment problems. However, for the special cases where due dates are exponentially distributed random variables, using a proposed dynamic programming approach is found to be relatively faster than solving the corresponding assignment problems. This so-called Pivot Dynamic Programming approach exploits necessary optimality conditions derived for ordering the jobs partially.

  • This paper considers the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem for the objective of minimizing the number of tardy jobs. In hybrid flow shops, each job is processed through multiple production stages in series, each of which has multiple identical parallel machines. The problem is to determine the allocation of jobs to the parallel machines at each stage as well as the sequence of the jobs assigned to each machine. Due to the complexity of the problem, we suggest search heuristics, tabu search and simulated annealing algorithms with a new method to generate neighborhood solutions. In particular, to evaluate and select neighborhood solutions, three surrogate objectives are additionally suggested because not much difference in the number of tardy jobs can be found among the neighborhoods. To test the performances of the surrogate objective based search heuristics, computational experiments were performed on a number of test instances and the results show that the surrogate objective based search heuristics were better than the original ones. Also, they gave the optimal solutions for most small-size test instances.

  • In order to solve scheduling, many techniques including optimization and heuristics methods have been proposed. However, these conventional approaches are usually inadequate to obtain a satisfactory solution because of a NP-Complete which requires extensive computation effort. The aim of this paper is to develop an expert system for job shop scheduling using an AI technique. Through this system, the user can choose one of several performances. If one performance is chosen, then the system solves a scheduling in order to satisfy that performance. Then, this system decides urgent job. This system can utilize production resources efficiently and minimize work-in-process inventories and tardy jobs.

  • This paper presents an efficient heuristic technique for minimizing the objectives related to tardiness such as total tardiness, maximum tardiness and root mean of tardiness in the job shop scheduling. The heuristic technique iteratively improves an active schedule through exploring the schedule's neighborrhood, using operation move methods. The move operatio is defined on an active chain of tardy jobs in the active schedule. To find the move operations which have a high probability of reducing tardiness, we develop move methods by exploiting the properties of active chains. Our technique is compared with the two existing heuristic techniques, that is, MEHA(Modified Exchange Heuristic Algorithm) and GSP(Global Scheduling Procedure) under the various environmental with the three levels of due date tightness and several sized problems. The experimental results show that the proposed technique outperforms the two exissting techiques in terms of solution quality and computation time.

  • Flowshop scheduling problem is known to be NP-complete. Since the optimization apporach like branch-and-bound is limited by exponentially growing computation time, many heuristic methods have been developed. Total tardiness is one of the criteria that the researchers have recently considered in flowshop scheduling. There, however, are few literatures which studied the general (m machine)-flowshop scheduling under the total tardiness criterion. In this paper, a heuristic scheduling method to minimize total tardiness at the (m machine, n job)-flowshop is presented. A heuristic value function is proposed to be used as a dispatching criterion in initial schedule generation. And the schedule improving procedure, by pairwise interchange of tardy job with the job right ahead of it, is introduced. Illustrative examles and simulated results are presented.

  • In this paper we research the problem in which the objective is to minimize the sum of squared deviations of job expected completion times from the due date, and the job processing times are stochastic. In the problem the machine is subject to stochastic breakdowns and all jobs are preempt-repeat. In order to show that the replacing ESSD by SSDE is reasonable, we discuss difference between ESSD function and SSDE function. We first give an express of the expected completion times for both cases without resampling and with resampling. Then we show that the optimal sequence of the problem V-shaped with respect to expected occupying time. A dynamic programming algorithm based on the V-shape property of the optimal sequence is suggested. The time complexity of the algorithm is pseudopolynomial.

  • This study is concerned with the scheduling problems in flexible manufacturing systems(FMSs). The scheduling problem in FMSs is a complex one when the number of machines and jobs are increased. Thus, a heuristic method is recommended in order to gain near-optimal solutions in a practically acceptable time. The purpose of this study is to develope a machine and AGV dispatching algorithm. The proposed dispatching algorithm is a on-line scheduling algorithm considering the due date of parts and the status of the system in the scheduling process. In the new machine and AGV dispatching algorithm, a job priority is determined by LPT/LQS rules considering job tardiness. The proposed heuristic dispatching algorithm is evaluated by comparison with the existing dispatching rules such as LPT/LQS, SPT/LQS, EDD/LQS and MOD/LQS. The new dispatching algorithm is predominant to existing dispatching rules in 100 cases out of 100 for the mean tardiness and 89 cases out of 100 for the number of tardy jobs.

  • This paper considers a parallel-machine scheduling problem with job release times and sequence-dependent setup times. The objective of this problem is to determine the allocation policy of jobs and the scheduling policy of machines so as to minimize the weighted sum of setup times, delay times, and tardy times. A mathematical model for optimal solution is derived and a meta heuristic algorithm based on the improved ant colony system is proposed in this paper. The performance of the meta heuristic algorithm is evaluated through compare with optimal solutions using randomly generated several examples.
