  • The low-cost REID system is expected to be widely used in the ubiquitous computing environment as an intelligent device. Although REID systems have several advantages, they may create new threats to users' privacy. In this paper, a traceable and unlinkable REID system called 'Fair EPC system' is proposed for low-cost RFID tags. The proposed system enables the protection of users' privacy from unwanted scanning, and it is traceable to the tag by authorized administrators when necessary. The proposed system has some advantages; (1) eliminating any danger of exposing users' information via tag tracking through the cooperation between readers or back-end databases, (2) enabling the tracking of real serial number of the tag only through the cooperation of authorized administrators using a cryptographic secret sharing scheme, and (3) providing the efficiency of the proposed system reduce the computational workloads of back-end databases.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient tag sleep method utilizing empty time slots for improving the tag collection performance in active RFID systems. In the proposed tag sleep method, the reader detects the occurrence of empty time slots by carrier sensing and utilizes the wasted empty time slots to transmit sleep commands to the collected tags throughout the framed slotted aloha-based tag collection process, resulting in reducing the time required for tag collection. Via the simulation experiments, we evaluated the performance of the tag collection applied with the proposed tag sleep method, compared with that of the basic tag collection. The simulation results showed that the tag collection applied with the proposed tag sleep method could reduce the average tag collection time by 12.28%, 12.30%, and 13.31 %, for the framed slotted aloha with the fixed 128 time slots and 256 time slots, and the dynamic framed slotted aloha anticollision protocols, respectively.

  • A fixed 900 MHz near field RFID system is developed to provide information; market efficiency, jewelry information and the circulation history information in real time, to the customers. The developed RFID system for the jewelry management consists of a reader, antenna and a CPU in a integrated type. The system size is $38\;{\times}\;25\;{\times}\;19\;cm^3$, the operated frequency band of the reader antenna is 905 ~ 926 MHz. The maximum gain of the embedded reader antenna is 5.1 dBii(@ 910 MHz). Honeycomb tag manufactured by RSI Co. is suitable for the jewelry management than another other commercial near field tags. The tagging method and the tagging location of Honeycomb tag are suggested. In the suggested system, the maximum reading range is about 16 cm, and the zone with 100 % recognition rate is 10 cm from the radom of the reader antenna.

  • RFID technology is applied to port logistics applications since it monitors objects wirelessly without line of sight and constructs ubiquitous system with low cost. Changes of stock status in the warehouse environment make the technology more important for managing such frequent storing and un-storing. Although the RFID has beneficial characteristics of low cost and low complexity, simultaneous responses of RFID tags cause tag identification collision due to absence of elaborate medium access control scheme. Several algorithms have been proposed to overcome the tag collision problem. However, it is difficult to adopt the methods to the logistics systems that has varying loads since there was no consideration on RFID tag's mobility. Therefore, we propose an efficient RFID tag anti-collision protocol, and simulation results demonstrate performance improvement by using the proposed scheme.

  • The fat content, fatty acid composition, trans fatty acid content and triacylglycerol (TAG) composition of 22 chocolates (domestics 8, foreigns 14) collected from the Korea distribution markets were investigated. The crude fat was extracted by acid hydrolysis method and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and reversed-phase HPLC for fatty acid and TAG compositions, respectively. The crude fat content of all chocolates varied between 30.11% and 49.59%. The major fatty acids in most of the chocolates were palmitic acid (19.36~31.15 wt%), stearic acid (5.11~36.32 wt%) and oleic acid (18.77~36.68 wt%). Whereas lauric acid (approximately 35.43 wt%) was detected in chocolate fat of sample No. 18. High oleic acid content was observed for the sn-2 position fatty acid with a range from 64.91% to 86.93%. Trans fatty acid contents in domestic chocolates (sample No. 1~8) and foreign chocolates (sample No. 9~22) were 0.03~0.59 wt% (0.01~0.19 g/100g chocolate) and 0.05~6.32 wt% (0.02~1.99 g/100g chocolate), respectively. In TAG composition, TAGs such as POP/PPO(1,3(2)-palmitoyl-2(3)-oleoyl glycerol, PN=48), POS/PSO(palmitoyl-oleoyl-stearoyl glycerol or palmitoyl-stearoyl-oleoyl glycerol, PN=50), SOS/SSO(1,3(2)-stearoyl-2(3)-oleoyl glycerol, PN=50) were mainly detected in most of the chocolates. The peaks of TAG with low PN (ex, 32-34, 36-38, and 40-42) were detected in No. 18 chocolate fat because of containing short chain fatty acid such as lauric acid.

  • Kinesins, as a kind of microtubule-based motor proteins, have a conserved microtubule-binding site in their motor domain. Here we report that two homologous kinesins in Arabidopsis thaliana, KatB and KatC, contain a second microtubule-binding site in their tail domains. The prokaryotic-expressed N-terminal tail domain of the KatC heavy chain can bind to microtubules in an ATP-insensitive manner. To identify the precise region responsible for the binding, a serious of truncated KatC cDNAs encoding KatC N-terminal regions in different lengths, KatC1-128, KatC1-86, KatC1-73 and KatC1-63, fused to Histidine-tags, were expressed in E. coli and affinity-purified. Microtubule cosedimentation assays show that the site at amino acid residues 74-86 in KatC is important for microtubule-binding. By similarity, we obtained three different lengths of KatB N-terminal regions, KatB1-384, KatB1-77, and KatB1-63, and analyzed their microtubule-binding ability. Cosedimentation assays indicate that the KatB tail domain can also bind to microtubules at the same site as and in a similar manner to KatC. Fluorescence microscopic observations show that the microtubule-binding site at the tail domain of KatB or KatC can induce microtubules bundling only when the stalk domain is present. Through pull-down assays, we show that KatB1-385 and KatC1-394 are able to interact specifically with themselves and with each other in vitro. These findings are significant for identifying a previously uncharacterized microtubule-binding site in the two kinesin proteins, KatB and KatC, and the functional relations between them.

  • The $Ca^{2+}-activated$ chloride channel (CLCA) was activated by ginseng total saponin (GTS) in Xenopus oocytes. The reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) method was performed with gene specific primers on oocytes. The gene specific primers were deduced from spleen cDNA in expressed sequence tags (EST) database showing high homology to the mouse CLCA. Full length of cDNA sequence was completed by linkage of several 5' and 3'-half cDNA fragments have been sequenced. We named the full cDNA to oCLCA transiently. The oCLCA gene encodes a protein of 911 amino acids with $48.9\%$ identity overall to that of mouse CLCA (mCLCA4). A predicted oCLCA amino acids sequence shows the molecular weight of 108 kDa and has four or more transmembrane domains, and also the one hydrophobic Cterminal domain. oCLCA gene was expressed ubiquitously in various tissues included oocytes, also interfered in oocytes by siRNA for oCLCA. Here, we suggest that oCLCA is a endogenous chloride channel gene in oocytes. We are studying for the identification of oCLCA gene and further physiological research.

  • Reader-to-reader interference in RFID system is occurred due to the use of limited number of frequencies, and this is the main cause of read rate reduction in the passive RFID tags. Therefore, in order to maximize the read rate under the circumstances of limited frequency resources, it is necessary to minimize the frequency interference among RFID readers. This paper presents a hybrid FDM/TDM constraint satisfaction problem models for frequency interference minimization problems of the RFID readers, and assigns optimal channels to each readers using conventional backtracking search algorithms. A depth first search based on backtracking are accomplished to find solutions of constraint satisfaction problems. At this moment, a variable ordering algorithm is very important to find a solution quickly. Variable ordering algorithms applied in the experiment are known as efficient in the graph coloring. To justify the performance of the proposed constraint satisfaction problem model, optimal channels for each readers in the passive UHF RFID system are allocated by using computer simulation satisfying various interference constraints.

  • In railway systems, the exchange of information between running trains and wayside equipment is a very important role in various applications such as position detection and train control. Track circuits have been used as the medium for information transmission between trains and wayside. However, track circuits must be installed continuously along the track on the ground, resulting in an inevitable increase in installation and maintenance costs. One of the most promising solutions to reduce these costs is to mix continuous information transmission (via wireless communication) and discontinuous information transmission (via transponder). In this study, we designed antennas of railway high-speed transponder readers and tags for wireless power transmission, which can be used to transmit information from ground to high-speed trains with a maximum speed of 400km/h. We also verified system performance through computational simulation and prototyping.
