  • Steady-state anodic and cathodic polarization curves were developed for the Al electrode in 60 mole %$AlCl_3$-40 mole % NaCl at $180^{\circ}C$$453^{\circ}K$). Ohmic resistance contributed substantially to the anodic polarization at current densities greater than 50 mA/$CM^2$ even with capillary tip placed close to the electrode. This could not be rationalized from the resistivity of the melt, which would lead to a much smaller polarization. It was therefore concluded that a layer of high resistance $AlCl_3$ (or $AlCl_3$-rich melt) formed close to the anode surface. From the IR-corrected anodic Tafel and Allen-Hickling plots an apparent anodic charge-transfer coefficient of ${\alpha}_a$ = (2.3 RT/F)(d log i/d${\eta}$) = $1.5{\pm}0.25$ was obtained. At cathodic current densities greater than approximately 30 mA/$cm^2$, slow ion diffusion and dendrite growth both interfered with the measurement of kinetic parameters.

  • In the study, it was carried out dissimilar metal welding on materials for Al ship. The electrochemical and mechanical characteristics evaluated for specimen welded by ROBOT. The hardness of welding zone is lower than those of heat affected zone and base metal. At the result of tensile test, the specimen welded with ER5183 welding material presented excellent property compared with ER5556. The polarization trend for the base metal and welding metal showed the effects of concentration polarization due to oxygen reduction and activation polarization due to hydrogen generation. At the Tafel experiments result, the corrosion density in welded with ER5183 welding material presented the lowest value.

  • This investigation is to make comparative evaluation of the corrosion inhibiting effects of quinoline, oxine and 7-nitroso 8-hydroxy quinoline (7NHQ). In case of quinoline, and oxine, since the N atom in them functions as cation, the process involved is assumed to be cathode control. On the other hand 7-NHQ was found to form a stable chelate compound with $Fe^{++}$ ion in acidic solution and shows as anode control predominantly. After plotting polarization curves, Tafel parameters were calculated in each solution involving the inhibitors, at the same time corrosion inhibiting effects were separately measured and compared from data of both corrosion current and analytical method.

  • An electrochemical evaluation on the corrosion resistance for heavy anticorrosive paint(DFT:25um) was carried out for 5 kinds of heavy anticorrosive paints such as high solid epoxy(HE), solvent free epoxy(SE). tar epoxy(TE), phenol epoxy(PE). and ceramic epoxy(CE). Corrosion current densities obtained by Tafel extrapolation method from anodic and cathodic polarization curves didn't correspond with the values obtained by AC impedance measurement, however, the values of polarization resistance obtained from the cyclic voltammogram showed a good tendency corresponding well with the values of AC impedance measurement. Futhermore there was a good correlation against the corrosion resistance evaluation between passivity current density of the anodic polarization curve and diffusion limiting current density of the cathodic polarization curve. And corrosion resistance increased with corrosion potential shifting to noble direction. From the results discussed above. HE and CE had a relatively good corrosion resistance than other heavy anticorrosive paints.

  • Corrosion behavior of welded SWS400 steel used for bridges was studied in a range of the acid-rain environment using immersion, potentiodynamic polartization, polarization resistance, and galvanic corrosion tests. The SWS400 steel exhibited active corrosion behavior in the range of acid-rain environment, i.e. no passivation. As the results of immersion corrosion test, Tafel extrapolation method, and polarization resistance measurement, the average corrosion rats of the steels were 0.31-0.72 mm/year in the pH of 4-5, and 0.17 mm/yera in the pH 6, respectively. The steel showed a resistance to corrosion in the pH 6. The observed active behavior of SWS400 steel in chloride-containing environment indicated that the chloride ions exerts a detrimental influence on the formation of passive films. Galvanic corrosion was observed between the weld and the base metals because the weld is anodic to the base metal.

  • Mechanism of cobalt deposition was investigated using the potentiodynamic potentiostatic methods in solution of pH 4 and pH6.4 In all experimental conditions, polarization curves showed two regions with different Tafel slopes and the reaction order of cobalt ion was varied with the pH. It is belived that the deposition mechanism depends not only on the portential but also on the ph.

  • In this study, experiments were carried out to measure the variations in the corrosion potential and current density of polarization curves with amorphous $Fe_{70}Cr_5Si_{10}B_{15}$ and $Co_{70}Cr_5Si_{10}B_{15}$ alloy ribbon. The results were particularly examined to identify the influences of corrosion potential including various conditions such as hydrochloric acid, temperature, salt, pH, and oxygen. The optimum conditions were established with variations including temperature, salt, pH, oxygen, corrosion rate, and resistance of corrosion potential. The mass tranfer coefficient(${\alpha}$) value was determined with the Tafel's slope for the anodic dissolution based on the polarization effect with optimum conditions. The second anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density were designated as the critical corrosion sensitivity($I_{r}/I_{f}$).

  • Corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives, N-Cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (CBTS), N,N'-Dicyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (DCBS), N-tert-Butylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TBBS), N-tert-Amylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TABS), and N-Oxydiethylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (OBTS) was investigated by potentiostatic anodic and cathodic polarization (Tafel plot), DC polarization resistance, and AC impedance measurements. The corrosion current densities and rates are 1.236 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 0.655 MPY for CBTS; 1.881 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 0.988 MPY for DCBS; 2.367 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 1.257 MPY for TBBS; 3.398 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 1.809 MPY for TABS, respectively. OBTS among derivatives under study shows the lowest corrosion density (0.546 ${\mu}A /cm^2$) and the slowest corrosion rate (0.288 MPY). Also, the charge transfer resistances and the double layer capacitances are 275.21 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 7.0 ${\mu}F{cdot}cm^{-2}$ for CBTS; 14.24 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for DCBS; 54.15 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TBBS; 0.96$k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 83 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TABS, respectively. The weaker the electron donating inductive effect of derivatives is and the smaller the effect of steric hindrance is, the more the corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives is prevented. The above results agree with that observed in the field of tire industry.

  • Stainless steel has poor corrosion resistance in marine environment due to the breakdown of a passive film caused by chloride. It suffers electrochemical corrosion like pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion crack (SCC) in marine environment. In general, it indicates that the passive film of $Al_2O_3$ has better corrosion resistance than that of $Cr_2O_3$ in seawater. This paper investigated the damage behavior 304 stainless steel and hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Various electrochemical experiments were carried out including potential measurement, potentiodynaimic experiment, Tafel analysis and galvanostatic experiment. As a result of anodic polarization experiment, higher pitting damage depth was indicated at 304 stainless steel than hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel. In addition, relatively higher corrosion current density was shown at hot-dip aluminized stainless steel as a result of Tafel analysis.

  • Small FRP(fiber-reinforced polymer) fishing ships have numerous problems with the point of the environmental and recycling perspectives. In light of these aspects, aluminum can be used as a material for ship building. It is environmental friendly, easy to recycle, and provides a high added value to fishing boats. In this paper, we report on mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of welding parts for friction stir welded 5456-H116 Al alloy. In friction stir welded at various traveling speeds under the rotation speed of 500 RPM, the best characteristics presented in traveling speed of 15mm/min. The anodic polarizations of base metal and welding metal were observed tendency which current density from the open circuit potential suddenly increase. The cathodic polarization presented concentrated polarization caused by the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction and activation polarization caused by hydrogen generation. From result of Tafel analysis, the corrosion potential of 5456 alloy(Base metal) was lower than that of friction stir welded part, as were its corrosion current densities.
