  • Perilla (Perilla frutescens Britton var. Crispa Decasne) cultivated in three geographical areas of Korea, Gwangju, Taegu and Jeju, was analyzed for carbohydrate, lipid, protein, inorganic components and fatty acid composition. Carbohydrate, lipid and protein content of perilla seed ranged from 40 (Taegu) to 44% (Jelu), from 28 (Jeju) to 34% (Taegu) and from 15 (Gwangju) to 16% (Jeju), respectively. The overage contents of potassium, silicate, calcium, phosphate, iron, zinc, magnesium and mangane in the perilla seed varied between $426{\sim}446$, $197{\sim}229$. $124{\sim}136$, $46{\sim}56$, $30{\sim}49$, $42{\sim}45$, $40{\sim}45$, and $30{\sim}36mg%$, respectively and those variations different cultivation areas were not significant except iron. Saponification number, iodine value and acid value of the perilla oil were between $194{\sim}198$, $196{\sim}200$ and $4{\sim}5$, respectively. Those variations among the cultivation areas were not significant. The composition of the perilla oil was observed to be composed of $92{\sim}95%$ of triglyceride, $1.2{\sim}1.3%$ of phospholipid, $1.7{\sim}1.9%$ of unsaponifiables, $0.7{\sim}0.9%$ of free fatty acid, and $1.1{\sim}1.4$ linolenic, linoleic and oleic acid as $55{\sim}56$, $16{\sim}18$ and $16{\sim}20%$ of total fatty acids, but in phospholipid, the content of saturated fatty acids, $12{\sim}24$ of total fatty acid, was higher than that in triglyceride, $8{\sim}19%$ of total fatty acids. The content of saturated fatty acids in sterylester $(14{\sim}19%)$ was higher than that in sterylglycoside ($6{\sim}7%$ of total fatty acids). The variation in fatty acid composition was not significant in the composition of total fatty acid but a significant difference was observed in the composition of phospholipid, in which the content of palmitate ranged from 11.8%(Taegu) to 24%(Gwangju) of total fatty acids. No significant variation was found in the fatty acid composition among the cultivation areas, while a significant difference was observed in phospholipid.

  • The water environmental characters of the Nakdong River, Geumho River and Sin Stream, both before-flood (Aug. 24) and after-flood (Sept. 8), have been compared, and their effects on the growth of Spirodela polyrhiza Shleiden have been examined. Before the flood, the concentrations of most of the chemical components of the Geumho River were similar to those of the Sin Stream; (COD, 19.6~21.4; alkalinity, 177~183; $NH_4\;^+$, 20.7~24.4; $NO_3\;^-$, 3.9~4.3; $PO_\;4^{3-}$, 3.4~3.7; $Mg^{2+}$, 42; $Ca^{2+}$, 68.5~69.7; $Cl^-$, 90~92; $SiO_2$, 10.4~11.2; , 11~32; LAS, 3.0~3.8; , 0.007~0.010ppm) but much higher than those of the Nakdong River (30~40 fold for $NH_4\;^+$, , $PO_\;4^{3-}$ and LAS, and 2~5 fold for COD, alkalinity, $NO_3\;^-$, $Mg^{2+}$, Cl- and ). Especially in the Geumho River, Secchi disk transparency was very low (17cm) and DO was not detected. The flood caused significant increases in some chemical components: $NH_4\;^+$, 1.0;$NO_3\;^-$, 9.6; , 12.8 and , 5.4 ppm in the Nakdong River; DO, 1.0; $NO_2\;^-$, 0.92; $NO_3\;^-$, 22.2 and $SiO_2$, 17.6ppm in the Geumho River; DO, 3.0; $NO_2\;^-$, 1.4; $NO_3\;^-$, 22.2; SiO2$SiO_2$, 19.2 and , 25.0ppm in the Sin Stream. General species diversity index (H) of phytoplankton community in the Nakdong River, Geumho River and Sin Stream before flood was 3.1, 2.7 and 1.6, respectively. After the flood, the phytoplankton growth was highly sparse in each river water, hence indices have no significance. The growth of S. polyrhiza was enhanced in Geumho River water (max. RGR=26%/day), while it ceased within 7days in Nakdong River water.

  • The overall objective of this research was to show a NIR soil analyzer assessing soil fertility by measuring soil properties rapidly. A total of 140 soil samples were used to obtain calibrations and validation estimating soil properties. The soil samples were ground to pass 0.2mm sieve openings. Partial least square regression analysis was used to develop a calibration for soil analysis. The results indicated that NIR soil analyzer could be used as a routine method for quantitatively determining pH, OM, total nitrogen, CEC, extractable Ca, Mg, K, available $SiO_2$ and soil moisture simultaneously within one minute. Therefore, the NIR soil analyzer may be suitable for quick estimation of soil fertility estimation in fertilizer assessments.

  • Traditional methods of chemical analysis for the soil properties take time and produce harmful waste. The purpose of this research was to evaluate an NIR technique for measuring some soil properties that are rapid and accurate in soil fertility assessments. The NIR instrument (InfraAlyzer 500, Bran & Luebbe Co.) was used for obtaining spectral data from 140 finely ground soil for calibrations and validation estimating pH, CEC, extractable Ca, Mg, K, $SiO_2$, humic acid and EC. Partial least square regression analysis was used to develop a calibration of NIR spectroscopy method. The results indicated that NIR spectroscopy could be used as a routine nondestructive method quantitatively determining soil chemical properties quickly. However the NIR technique may require sample preparation to obtain even diffuse reflection spectra from the soil and data manipulations to obtain optimal predictions.

  • This study examines the establishment of Sea-po (서포) in the opening period of Korea at the end of the 19th century. The role they played, the particular situations and their geographical characteristics are researched, The earliest sea-po was Koh-je-hong sea-po, which was established in Taekwang-kyo at the end of 1880s. Around 1905, a specialised book distribution system was set up with establishement of Chu-han-yung book store, Kim-sang-man book store, Jesuit book store, Tae-dong su-si, Kae-myung sea-kwan, Tong-wha seo-kwan. The owners of the seo-pos were pioneers in introducing modern culture with nationalistic consciousness, although they were primarily businessmen and their social origins varied. The primary role of seo-pos was selling a variety of books but some combined printing and publication of books as well. It seems that publication business took roots around 1908, though it is difficult to know the accurate dates of first attempts. Some sea-pas offered book rental services for poor people who could not easily afford to purchase books. A certain amount of deposit had to be paid to benefit from the services. Jesuit Bookstore in Pyungyang had a library facility with a large stock or books in the same building open to public for free. These sea-pas started mainly in Seoul and Pyungyang, which were traditional centers for economic and cultural affairs. Early introduction of foreign cultures and commercial developments in these areas contributed to the establishment of sea-pos. The sea-po which took charge of book distribution in the provinces was set up around 1906. One of the important findings of this study is that the geographical distribution of sea-po shows the following three characteristics. First is that the area such as Seoul, Taegu and Chunju were the traditional centers of publishing culture from which Panggak-bon(방각본) emerged. Second characteristic is Pyungyang and the surrounding Pyungbuk province, and harbors like Inchon and Pusan, which had the benefits of early spread of modem cultures. Third characteristic is Kaesung and the surrounding Hwanghae province which bridged Pyungyang and Seoul. The reception of foreign cultures stimulated the commercial spirits traditionally attributed to Kaesung to establish sea-pas most actively.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate any influence of environmental factors associated with feeding on infants' growth. One hundred infants(62 males and 38 females) aged 4-9 months were measured for length and were weighed. Their mothers were interviewed using questionnaires including general and environmental characteristics and maternal feeding attitude, ideal body habitus, infant's food behavior, and infant's food behavior, and infant's temperament. A further study was conducted on 29 infants at the time their ages reached 12 months. Their dietary intakes were assessed, and blood hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations were measured. Z-scores of weight-for-age(WAZ) and Z-scores of height-for-age(HAZ) of 4-9 month- old infants were not correlated with age, education level, income, weight, and height of their parents. Formula-fed infants had significantly lower WAZ and body mass index (BMI) than those of breast fed infants. WAZ was significantly correlated with maternal feeding attitude, but not with ideal body habitus, infant's food behavior or infant's temperament. WAZ of 12-months after birth because of supplementary foods introduced from 6 months of age. WAZ and BMI were positively correlated with blood hemoglobin concentration. Therefore, to ensure proper growth of infants, efforts should be given to postental factors such as breast-feeding, maternal feeding attitude, adequate iron status as well as prenatal factors. • The Jurassic granitoids in the study area are divided into the "Gneissose granodiorite" and the "Daebo granodiorite" (1 : 250,000 Jeonju Geological map, 1973). The term of Geochang granodiorite was used in this study instead of "Daebo granodiorite". These granitoids were studied in terms of microscopic observation, petrochemistry, and zircon morphology. The granitoids are mostly granodiorite. Two kinds of progressive variation can also be recognized in the modal quartz~alkali feldspar~plagioclase triangular diagram; the Gneissose granodiorite is in accordance with the trondhjemitic (low k) trend, and the Geochang granodiorite with the granodioritic trend (medium k). The granitoids belong to the calc-alkaline series, and are classified into the I-type (magnetite series). Plagioclase ($An_{25.1}{\sim}An_{30.9}$) in the granitoids shows generally an oligoclase composition. Biotite has a wider range in (Si, Al) solution than in (Fe, Mg) solid solution. Hornblende occurs in a few thin sections of the Geochang granodiorite, and is plotted in the tschermakite field. The zircon prism shows a long variation between the {110} dominant type and the {100} dominant type in the Geochang granodiorite, but only the {110}={100} type in the Gneissose granodiorite. However, zircon crystals in the granitoids are mostly crystallized in a low-to-medium temperature magma. In the PPEF (Prism- Pyramid-Elongation-Flatness) diagram, the Gneissose granodiorite shows a closed scissors type, the Geochang granodiorite, a opened scissors type. It indicates that the Geochang granodiorite might originate from the mixed magma with crustal materials or pre-existed residual magma which had formed the Gneissose granodiorite.

  • Some sorption behaviors of U(VI) ion on Arsenazo I-XAD-2 chelating resin were investigated. This chelating resin was synthesized by the diazonium coupling of Amberlite XAD-2 resin with Arsenzo I chelating reagent and characterized by elementary analysis method and IR spectrometry. The optimum conditions for the sorption of U(VI) ion were examined with respect to pH, U(VI) ion concentration and shaking time. Total sorption capacity of this chelating resin on U(VI) ion was 0.39mmol U(VI)/g resin in the pH range of 4.0~4.5. This chelating resin was showed increased sorption capacity on the increased pH value. It was confirmed that sorption mechanism of U(VI) ion on the Arsenazo I-XAD-2 chelating resin was competition reacting between U(VI) ion and $H^+$ ion. Breakthrough volume and overall capacity of U(VI) ion measured by column were was 600 ml and 0.38 mmol U(VI)/g resin, respectively. The desorption of U(VI) ion was showed recovery of 90~96% using 3M $HNO_3$ and 3M $Na_2CO_3$ as a desorption solution. The separation and concentration of U(VI) ion from natural water and sea water was performed successfully by Arsenazo I-XAD-2 chelating resin.

  • In order to evaluate the anti-oxidative capabilities of Angelica dahurica Radix ethanol extract (ADEE), we analyzed the contents of polyphenol and flavonoid compounds and the electron donating ability from ADEE. For animal experimentation, the test agent was topically applied to the artificial tanning spots which were induced by 1,500 mJ/$cm^2$ of ultraviolet B radiation on the backs of brown guinea pigs weighing approximately 450~500g. The test agent of $30{\mu}{\ell}$ was applied (6areas per group) twice a day, five days a week, for five weeks. On completion of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed under anesthetization, and the artificial tanning spots were obtained by biopsy punch and stained with H&E to observe the histological change in the epidermis and dermis. As a result, the contents of polyphenol and flavonoid compounds in ADEE were 20.7mg/g and 19.5mg/g respectively. As the for electron-donating capability of ADEE, it was observed that ADEE displays a dose-dependent antioxidative capacity of 14.8% and 19.8% at the concentration of 500 and 1000 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ respectively. Tissue staining with H&E revealed that the epidermis of the control group was slightly thicker than that of the other groups. However no inflammation or any other undesirable effect on the skin tissue due to ADEE was observed. These results indicate that ADEE is of value as a natural antioxidant.
