  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of tunnel covering materials on the growth and yield of red pepper in paddy fields. Materials for tunnel coverings included illite non-woven fabric and P.E film. Air and soil temperature were higher in the illite non-woven tunnel and P.E film tunnel by $7-8^{\circ}C$ and $2-3^{\circ}C$, respectively, compared to no covering. Relative humidity in those treatments was also higher than with no covering. The growth and yield were higher with illite non-woven tunnels and P.E film tunnels than with no covering. In particular, the yield was 30% and 26% higher in illite non-woven tunnels and P.E film tunnels, respectively, than with no covering.

  • With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), the surface electronic band structures of Pt3Co (111) and Pt3Ni (111) single crystals are investigated, which allow to study the bonding interaction between chemically absorbed atomic oxygen and its surfaces. The d-band electrons of subsurface TM are separated from the direct chemical bonding with atomic oxygen. That is, the TM does not contribute to direct chemical bonding with oxygen. From the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is identified that the main origin of improved oxygen absorption property, i.e. softening of Pt-O bonding, is due to the suppression of Pt surface-states which is generated from change of interlayer potential, i.e. charge polarization, between Pt-top and TM-subsurface. Our results point out the critical roles of subsurface TM in modifying surface electronic structures, which in turn can be utilized to tune surface chemical properties.

  • The objective of this study were to evaluate the antioxidant activity and the anti-inflammatory effects of Angelica tenuissima (AT) which has been used widely as a traditional medicine. The antioxidant activities of AT was tested by DPPH radical scavenging, superoxide anion scavenging and nitric oxide scavenging. AT showed strong antioxidant activity in all experiment. In macrophages nitric oxide (NO) is released as an inflammatory mediator and has been proposed to be an important modulator of many pathophysiological conditions and high concentratin of NO is produced by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). In this study we have examined the inhibition effects of NO by 85% methanol extracts of AT in mouse (C57BL/6) peritoneal macrophage. AT (100, 1000 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$) suppressed nitric oxide production and iNOS expression without any notable cytotoxicity and it also inhibited the expression of inflammatoryenzymes like cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). These data suggest that 85% methanol extracts of AT may possibly be used as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

  • Effects of Astragali radix extract (AG) on the humoral immunotoxic responses of zinc chloride (Zn) were studied in ICR mice. Mice were divided into 4 groups (10 mice/group), and Zn was given to the mice, 1 hr after i.p. injection with 0.5 g/kg of AG, by i.p. injection daily for 10 days at a dose of 25 mg/kg. Mice were immunized and challenged with sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Zn treatment increased the relative weight of spleen compared with those in controls, but decreased the hemagglutination (HA) titer 2-mercaptoethanol-resistant HA (MER-HA) titer and splenic plaque forming cells (PFC). AG treatment significantly increased the relative weight of spleen, HA titer and PFC compared with those in controls. Combination of Zn and AG significantly increased the relative weight of spleen compared with those in controls, but decreased the HA titer, MER-HA titer and PFC. The relative weight of spleen was significantly increased in the Zn and AG combination group than those in Zn alone treatment group. But the HA titer, MER-HA titer and PFC were slightly increased in the group of combination. These results suggest that AG might slightly restore humoral immune responses lowered by an excess of zinc.

  • Astaxanthin is a kind of carotenoid compounds, having a antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The antioxidative mechanism by which carotenoid scavenge free radicals has been clearly elucidated, but has not tried for the development of mammalian preimplantation embryo. This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidative effect of astaxanthin on in vitro development of porcine in vitro fertilized embryos. Porcine embryos derrived from in vitro fertilization (IVF) were cultured in 5% $CO_{2} in air at $38.5^{\circ}C$ in PZM-3 medium supplemented with different dosages of astaxanthin ($0,\;1,\;5\;and\;10{\mu}M$) and taurine (0, 1, 2.5 and 5 mM) as a positive control, and execute to compare the effects of various antioxidants such as taurine, melatonin and asculatin on in vitro development. The proportions of embryos developed to the blastocyst stage were increased when $1\;and\;5\;{\mu}M$ of astaxanthin (26.6 and 23.4%, respectively) and 1 and 2.5 mM taurine (25.8 and 26.4%, Respectively) were supplemented, compared to controls (p<0.05). Also, various antioxidant-treated groups were significantly higher rates of blastocysts (astaxanthin, 27.4%; taurine, 29.1%; melatonin, 26.8%; aesculetin, 27.9%, respectively) than control (18.8%). There was no difference in mean cell number of blastocysts between antioxidants and control. This result indicates that astaxanthin has an antioxidant feature when porcine IVF embryos were cultured in vitro.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate interaction patterns and characteristics of small group discussions during elementary school science classes. Four heterogeneous groups were formed according to preferences and non-preferences, consisting of male and female students. Verbal interactions during small group discussions were audio and videotaped, transcribed and analyzed. The interaction frequency of each group was compared in terms of their cognitive and affective aspects. The results in terms of the cognitive aspect showed that there were no significant differences in the frequency of interaction between preference and non-preference groups' verbal behaviors. However, the quality of interaction was superior and the number of high level types of interaction were more frequent in the preference group. From the affective perspective, both groups of students exhibited a positive attitude in the preference group and a negative attitude in the non-preference group. The differences of interaction between the male and female student's groups were that in the case of the female group, the frequency and the quality of interaction was higher. Moreover, in contrast to male students, female students revealed satisfaction and favorable attitudes in their non-preference group because they felt more a acceptable atmosphere and attitude in that group. These results suggest that the interactions of the preference group are more interactive and elaborate in nature than those of the non-preference group.

  • Objective : Pontine hemorrhages usually result in a much higher morbidity and mortality than any other intracranial vascular lesion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate survival and the contributing factors for patients with pontine hemorrhage. Methods : Of the 41 patients who were admitted to our hospital with their first acute pontine hemorrhage from 1997 to 2005, 35 patients were included in this study. Medical records were reviewed to confirm the accuracy of diagnosis and collect demographic, clinical and radiological data. The patients were divided into two groups, survivors and deceased patients; then the survivors were divided again into a group of patient with good results and those with poor results. The location of the hematoma, maximum anteroposterior [AP] diameter, maximum transverse diameter, hematoma volume, ventricular extension, extension into the midbrain, hydrocephalus and initial Glasgow coma scale [GCS] were evaluated. Results : The two year survival rate was 58.5%. The survival of patients with pontine hemorrhage was affected by initial GCS score and transverse hematoma dimeter. Functional outcome of patients who survived was affected by initial GCS, maximum transverse diameter, maximum AP diameter and hematoma volume. Conclusion : The rate of survival after pontine hemorrhage is associated with the transverse diameter of the hematoma and more importantly the initial GCS. Long-term outcome of survivors is influenced by the initial GCS, transverse diameter, AP diameter and volume. Through the multivariate analysis, initial GCS is the only significant factor on survival. Strictly speaking, initial GCS is not modifiable. However, surgical reduction may be considered to amend theses decisive factors. Additional study for indication, timing and method of surgical management is needed.

  • In order to investigate the cooling and heating characteristics of a variable-capacity system A/C applying a digital scroll compressor, the cooling and heating capacities and COP are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The capacity of the system is controlled by the digital scroll compressor, which is operated by controling PWM valve and the loading vs. unloading time. In the case of unloading compared that of loading, the consumption power of the compressor is about 11% and the capacity variation of the system A/C is within about 1%. When the system A/C is operated under the cooling and heating standard conditions, COP is nearly uniform but cooling capacity and heating capacity increase at minimum, rated and maximum modes. The system A/C applying the digital scroll compressor is effective for the range with high load or the width of large load variation. When the auxiliary heater is on, at the cold region, the system A/C produces the excellent heating capacity.
