School science is often criticized as being too remote from both learners' interests and needs and as maintaining scientist-oriented approaches rather than humanistic ones. Although science is mainly taught on the basis of textbooks inside classrooms, the learning of science can not be confined to the boundaries of curriculum and school. Firstly, this paper briefly reviews and characterizes the historical development of science education with a series of analogies, and then suggests a new analogy, a so-called 'Hearts-On' approach to science education which emphasizes the humanistic aspects and the contextual dimension of science education. Secondly, it critically examines how much traditional school science teaching, particularly in physics, is limited in terms of the context of learning (i.e. textbook, laboratory, classroom, local, and global) as well as in terms of the context of the contents (i.e. physical, personal, social, and global). Thirdly, some recent attempts initiated by the author and colleagues are explained as examples of the Hearts-On approach to science education. In particular, a series of community-based science programs led by SNU and the development of a series of books on 'Contextual Physics'(i.e. Body Physics, Wearing Physics, Dining Table Physics, and Sports Physics) are outlined. Finally, the idea of scientific humanism is explored in relation to the context-rich approaches in science education. It is hoped that this paper helps us to reconsider how we can expand the world of science education beyond the boundaries of the curriculum and school and into a more humanistic one.

This study aims to drive the implications for the structure of mathematics curriculum documents in Korea, exploring the coherence in the documental structure of the IB DP mathematics curriculum, which is gaining international attention. The documents of the IB DP mathematics curriculum were analyzed based on the coherence of external and internal structures. First, the curriculum was consistently described by subject and topic, presenting the table of contents and structure of the documents in the same format. Second, the descriptions of the curriculum between subjects and within the subjects were consistent through the same composition of the subject and assessment methods, the presentation of big ideas, and 'Guidance, clarification and syllabus links'. Third, in 'Connections', the curriculum documents were described with coherence through linking with other subjects by describing the connection plan with the real-world contexts, other subjects, and the 'Theory of Knowledge' in the IB curriculum. Based on these findings and implications for the concreteness and consistency of the components in mathematics curriculum documents, we propose the coherence between the presentation of subject areas and assessment methods of the revised curriculum, and the implementation of coherence in documental structure through links with other subjects.

The objective of this study is the generation of the gridded flash flood index using the gridded hydrologic components of TOPLATS land surface model and statistic flash flood index model. The accuracy of this method is also examined in this study. The study area is the national capital region of Korea, and 38 flash flood damages had occurred from 2009 to 2012. The spatio-temporal resolutions of land surface model are 1 h and 1 km, respectively. The gridded meteorological data are generated using the inverse distance weight method with automatic weather stations (AWSs) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The hydrological components (e.g., surface runoff, soil water contents, and water table depth) of cells corresponding to the positions of 38 flood damages reasonably respond to the cell based hourly rainfalls. Under the total rainfall condition, the gridded flash flood index shows 71% to 87% from 4 h to 6 h in the lead time based on the rescue request time and 42% to 52% of accuracy at 0 h which means that the time period of the lead time is in a limited rescue request time. From these results, it is known that the gridded flash flood index using the cell based hydrological components from land surface model and the statistic flash flood index model have a capability to predict flash flood in the mountainous area.
First. the purification and analysis of alliin in garlic from different origins by alliin-HPLC determination method were studied. Allinase in garlic was inactivated by heating in boiling water followed by extraction of alliin in garlic with 80% methanol. To remove free amino acids and alliin homologs in garlic, garlic extract was separated by cation exchange column which was packed with amberlite CG-120 resin using 40L d-water as eluent. Alliin in garlic extract was crystallized in a mixture of acetone (50$^{\circ}C$):H$_2$O:acetic acid=70:29:1 and then recrystallized in a mixture of acetone (50$^{\circ}C$):H$_2$O:acetic acid=75:24:1. Obtained alliin was identified by melting point. TLC, microscope observation and mass spectrometry. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) following pre-column derivatization of cystein derivatives with o-phthaldialdehyde/2-mercaptoethanol has succeessfully been applied to the analysis of various garlics. Each alliic of standard solution and garlic extract was derivatized to isoindole derivative by o-phthaldialdehyde /2-mercaptoethanol and then analyzed by HPLC. Six point calibration was done by using alliin peak area. Lineality was observed at 0 ∼ 1.0mg/ml of alliin concentration. Weighted regression line function was Y=6254X - 256077. By this function, alliin contents in various garlics were 0.34 ∼ 0.73% fresh weight. Second study was designed to evaluate the effects of garlic extracts of various concentrations on the growth of various pathogenes (Eubacterium limonsum, Bacteroides fragilis, Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella typhi, Shigella sonnei, Kiebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Pserdomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli). For antimicrobial effects against microorganism, totally minimal inhibition concentrations (MIC) of alliin were from 5,000 to 20,000ppm. MIC of ethanol extract were 1,250 to 10,000ppm.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the errors in science inquiry research reports written by students who won the encouragement award at the National Science Fair, and analyze the frequency of error types by school levels. The framework for analysis was constructed based on the table of contents of the students' science inquiry research reports, and the reports were analyzed for errors in six stages: Research question/hypothesis, prior research, experimental procedure, results, conclusions, and references. The study identified several types of errors at each stage, such as unreasonable research questions and wrong hypotheses in the research question/hypothesis stage, and limited considerations under certain conditions and selection of inappropriate experimental instruments in the experimental procedure stage. The study found that the frequency ratio of experimental procedure error was the highest across all school levels, and the order of errors varied by school level. Frequency ratio of error types of school level was: in the elementary school students' reports, errors were analyzed in the order of experimental procedure (36.88%), prior research (17.02%), conclusions (16.31%), research question/hypothesis (13.48%); In the middle school students' reports, experimental procedure (42.86%), conclusions (20.00%), prior research (14.28%), results (11.43%), research question/hypothesis (10.01%); In the high school students' reports, experimental procedure (45.16%), research question/ hypothesis (16.13%), conclusions (16.13%), and prior research (11.83%). The findings could be used to guide teachers in helping students conduct scientific inquiry research or write reports.

The purpose of this paper was to explore the materials in the Korean and Japanese Home Economics textbooks in middle school with the perspective of green life education. Home Economics is one of the relevant subjects to green growth education. Therefore, home economics teachers need to teach green life based on the low $CO_2$-green growth in the class. Sustainable living at home has been emphasized as one of the main importance of Home Economics since the first curriculum period. However, it is required to reinforce in the 2009 revised curriculum. The content analyses had been done to explore the materials of five areas in the 8 Korean and 2 Japanese junior highschool Home Economics textbooks through two checking steps. Each subject area of Home Economics had various form of materials such as terminology, table figure pictures, reading, and activity, related to green life related to environmental, economic, and social sustenance. The forms and the quantity of materials were some what differ by subject areas as well as textbooks. The levels of material contents were ranged from the knowledge, recognition, to intention to practicum of green life. The green life materials were more likely practical in Japanese textbooks rather than Korean ones. It is recommended teachers to choose the valuable materials over the textbooks and practical green life should clearly mentioned in home economics curriculum to be showed in textbooks.
We constructed a model test apparatus to evaluate the dependence of the saturation velocity (Vs) in soils on rainfall intensity (IR). The apparatus comprises a soil box, a rainfall simulator, and measuring sensors. The model grounds (60 cm × 50 cm × 15 cm) were formed by Joomunjin standard sand with a relative density of 75%. The rainfall simulator can control the rainfall intensity to reenact the actual rainfall in a soil box. Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) sensors and tensiometers were installed in the soils to measure changes in the volumetric water content and matric suction due to rainfall infiltration. During the tests, the soil saturation was determined by raising the groundwater table, which was formed at the bottom of the soil box. [Please check that the correct meaning has been maintained.] The wetting front did not form at the ground surface during rainfall because the soil particles were uniform and the coefficient of permeability was relatively high. Our results show that the suction stress of the soils decreased with increasing volumetric water content, and this effect was most pronounced for volumetric water contents of 20%-30%. Based on a regression analysis of the relationship between rainfall intensity and the average saturation velocity, we suggest the following equation for estimating the saturation velocity in soils: Vsavg (cm/sec) = 0.068IR (mm/hr).
A liquefied seasoning material was manufactured by using the enzymatic hydrolysis for the benefit of highly effective utilization of cockle shell by-product, and their quality was investigated. The weight ratio of by-product to whole cockle shell was 32.7%, and the contents of moisture and crude protein in the raw cockle shell by-product were 83.1% and 10.7%, respectively. The optimal concentrations of protease such as Protease N. P.(Pacific Chemical Co.) and Alcalase(Noo co), used in order to reduced the hydrolysis period, were effective at 4%(w/w), and optimal hydrolyzing time was 8 hours and after 8 hours were little changed. To improve flavor of the liquefied seasoning material, by Maillard reaction used thermal treatment, addition of glucose was very effective. And addition in hydrolysate with 10% glucose, 9% table salt, 2% starch and 0.5% caramel were suitable for promotion of taste. Total nitrogen and amino type nitrogen in the product were 1,607mg% and 1,264mg%, respectively. And the ratio of amino type nitrogen to the total nitrogen was 78.6%. The major free amino acid were glutamic acid, lysine, leucine, valine and aspartic acid, and content of glutamic acid was 1,027.5mg%.
The survey was carried out in order to delineate the occurrence of ore deposits and the mineralized characteristics in the Estancia de la Virgen area through the 1:2,000 scaled geological mapping and topographic measuring surveys. Gold-silver mineralization is in the fault block developed between the San Agustin Fault and Cabanas Fault. It is associated with ore bearing quartz veins controlled by the fault structure. The contents of Au and Ag range from traces up to 72 g/t and 180 g/t respectively. According to traversing the outcrops, the quartz veins are traced by 0.5 Km trended to north and south. In those extended part, they continue for 1,000 m intermittently. Gold-silver mineralization could be divided into three stages. In the first stage, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite were formed with the primary silver and gold associated with galena and copper sulfides respectively. In the second stage, Cu-Bi-Au-Ag bearing sulfides such as chalcocite, covellite, and linarite are formed and usually deposited on the cataclastic fractures of galena and/or chalcopyrite. In the third stage, both the carbonation of galena and sphalerite and the sulphatization of galena, took place in the surface environment. And then primary silver was carried away off and was deposited on galena and/or copper sulfides during oxidation near the water table. Low partitionings of Fe in sphalerite assist that the minerals were formed at the relatively low temperature, which is coincided with previously reported homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions.
The biggest characteristic of Social Network Game(SNG) is that games are played through competition and cooperation with the actual acquaintances based on SNS. Even though such competition and challenge spirit have been dealt importantly as preceding factors having influence on the flow in games in the existing game area, it is rare to find researches deeply considering the characteristics of ranking competition between acquaintances in SNG. Moreover, it was not considered that such acquaintances could be the targets of competition and also challenge at the same time in SNG. Therefore, this study examined the achievements(big differences in ranking, small differences in ranking) of the targets for comparison and closeness(strong ties, weak ties) with the targets for comparison as factors having influence on competition and challenge spirit, and also empirically analyzed the influence of such factors and interactions between factors on players' competition and challenge spirit in the ranking competitive society, by analyzing the characteristics of ranking competition between acquaintances in the mobile puzzle, SNG based on SNS through the analysis on the preceding research on the self-evaluation maintenance model of the social comparison theory. In the results, when preferentially exposing competitors with small difference in ranking and also exposing competitors with stronger ties, players' competition is stimulated, so that it can improve their challenge spirit. Such results of this study can be expected to a lot contribute to the actual design work of SNG ranking table contents.
