  • Smart TV is expected to take the center stage of the recent "smartization" trend in IT and consumer electronics as it performs a hub for various smart IT devices, such as smart phone, smart pad, PC, etc. It is distinct from traditional TVs or even IPTVs in the sense that it provides immersive and interactive experiences via apps downloaded through TV app store. Smart TV could serve as a new intermediary device between other smart devices and the Internet. While it started experiencing a rapid growth, little research has been conducted to understand this emerging technology in terms of its user acceptance and adoption by users. The current research attempts to fill the gap in the field by examining factors and processes for this new technology to be adopted by users. This paper draws on theories of IT acceptance and use, such as the "Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology", to investigate factors affecting "intention to use" of smart TV. The proposed research model is analyzed using the structural equation modeling approach. Findings show that such factors as innovativeness, switching cost, switching benefit, service interface, and user interface affect users' intention to use smart TV, through effort expectation, performance expectation, and social influence. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of parental media use, parents' educational needs regarding media use, and parents' media guidance for children on the children's media use. Methods: The participants were 161 parents of elementary school children in the 1st and 4th grades. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 IBM program. Results: The average times for watching television and using the internet in the children were 11.44 hours and 5.89 hours per week, respectively. Children's time watching television was influenced by parents' time watching television, children's gender (girl), and parents' educational needs. Children's television dependency was influenced by parents' educational needs, parents' time watching television, and parents' age (under 36 years). Time using the internet and internet dependency in the children were influenced by parents' educational needs, family monthly income (under 3 million won), and parents' guidance for children on watching television. Conclusion: The findings indicate that elementary school children's media use is influenced by parental media use, parents' educational needs, and parents' media guidance for children. Therefore parental factors should be considered in developing approaches to provide education programs to prevent media overuse in children.

  • Perceived control and use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has long been known as important aspects of students' achievement. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between adolescents' perceived achievement goals, their Individual ICT use, ICT use for government-sponsored educational programs on television or the Internet, academic achievement and the attitude toward learning. Most previous research has employed cross-sectional data analysis using relatively small samples. For this purpose, this study used the datasets of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study (SELS 2011) from Seoul Educational Research & Information Institute. We analyzed structural equation modeling (SEM) a nationally represented sample (4,346 eighth-grade students). The results of this study showed that students' perceived achievement goals had a positive relationship with their individual ICT use, and their use of ICT programs for government-sponsored educational programs on television or the Internet. Also, students' individual ICT use had a positive relationship with their achievement, but ICT use for government-sponsored educational programs on television or the Internet did not have a significant relationship with their achievement. That is, students' individual ICT use mediated the relationship between their perceived goals and academic achievement. In addition, results indicated that students' individual ICT use and ICT use for government-sponsored educational programs on television or the Internet had a positive relationship with their attitude toward learning. That is, both students' individual ICT use and ICT use for government-sponsored educational programs on television or the Internet mediated the relationship between their perceived goals and their attitude toward learning.

  • This research examines the legal liability of place-shifting of TV contents by the use of the Slingbox. The place-shifting of TV contents is fair use because it is a non-commercial private use based on the relevant case law regarding time-shifting and device-shifting such as Sony, RIAA and Napster. But the sharing of place-shifting function is likely to be liable for copyright infringement. And place-shifting may not be fair use based on the cases which denied fair use of time-shifting and space-shifting because the consumers' convenience for the use of the copyrighted work is against the purpose of legislation of copyright law. Place-shifting is unlikely to have a significant effect on the potential market for TV contents because it presents lucrative new platforms to disseminate TV contents to computers and mobile devices. However it is likely to have negative effect because various devices can be the follow-up marketplaces of the copyright holders of TV contents. This study proposes the "innovative medium defense," a new doctrine to analyze liability of innovative media.
