  • This study examined Korean and the U.S.A..'s television anti-smoking advertisements that were coined to discourage adults and teens smoking. A content analysis of 71 television advertisements listed in the "Smoking Guidance Program" operated by Korea Health Promotion Foundation. This study evaluated to detect whether the advertising content reflected core health communication theories such as health belief model, theory of reasoned action, and social cognitive theory used in the designing of anti-smoking ad message to change behavior and attitudes toward smoking unfavorably. The results showed that Korean anti-smoking ads mostly relied on social norm messages, followed by smoking attitude. The message of modeling and self-efficacy was least used; while, the U.S.A. ads focused more on modeling and self efficacy. This difference comes from the cultural difference. Namely, Korea focused more on collectivism rather than individualism. The anti-smoking ads of Korea and the U.S.A. most frequently adopted horror and humor rather than sadness, no appeal, and angry. The ads targeted more on adults rather than teens. The research identifies the types of advertisements that are most likely to utilized and underutilize in the Korea and U.S.A. anti-smoking ads and contribute to further understandings of anti-smoking ads theoretically.

  • Compared with analog broadcasting, digital broadcasting supports technical background to provide personalize the TV watching environment by offering broadcasting services that can adapt to viewers' preferences. However, current digital broadcasting shows limited services such as reservation recording, simple program guiding with an electronic program guide (EPG) on a personal video recorder system, and primitive data broadcasting by broadcasters. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to suggest a new broadcasting environment which gives a person facility and a difference fur watching TV by serving enhanced personalized services. For that reason, we propose an intelligent broadcasting system which can minimize viewer's actions, and enhanced broadcasting services which are based on understanding of the semantics of broadcasting contents. To implement the system, agent technology as well as the MPEG-7 and TV-Anytime Forum (TVAF) are employed. For content-level services, real-time content filtering and personalized video skimming are designed and implemented. To verify the usefulness of the proposed system, we demonstrate it with a test-bed on which content-level personalized services are implemented.

  • Viewers have always switched channels and they have selected by turning away from the TV and returning to the set when the content seemed more amusing. Also, people usually watch television with their family members and thus the experience of viewing is embedded uniquely in ongoing processes of family interaction. In other words, people develop patterns and habits through the act of viewing together. As viewing with family members is the most frequent mode of media exposure, the context of family viewing needs to be thoroughly examined if we are to understand the family's use of television. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic nature of television viewing behavior. With the people meter's second-by-second viewing information, first we analyze who, when, and why viewers change channels. The ensuing reduction of advertising impact due to zapping will be investigated as well. Then the focus will be shifted to the dynamic interaction of coviewing among family members. In order to further explore the in-depth nature of television viewing, actual viewing information should be cross-analyzed with respect to both demographic and psychographic variables. In this study we surveyed individual characteristics such as television watching patterns, program type preference, attitude toward commercials, channel control intensity, and personalities. We have demonstrated that the results of an meticulus analysis of survey data provide valuable insights into the dynamics of television viewing among family members.

  • TV has a very strong influence on various aspects of children's life and development. In view of this influence, various problems related to the content and production of TV programs for early - childhood deserve a careful study. In this study, attempts were made to suggest some strategies for the production of TV programs for early childhood based on an expansive literature review. 1. The running time of TV programs for early-childhood ages of 4-5 year old is suggested to be 15 minutes. 2. In the process of producing the programs, a group of professionals including in-service teachers, researchers specializing in child development, psychology and sociology, idea-creators, script writers, media experts, producers, and monitors should provide concerted efforts throughout the process. 3. The running time of TV programs for early-childhood should be less than 20 minutes and therefore should have simple learning objectives. 4. The contents of programs should be organized in such a way as to enable children to view themselves as well as the environment in more positive ways and to fester desirable values and beliefs in them based on various constructive activities and plays. 5. The programs should adopt various techniques including repetition, to ensure the maximum learning effect in full consideration of children's interest. 6. The programs should be continuously revised and supplemented based on the evaluation of the programs, children's responses and monitor's feedbacks.

In order to conduct this research, the study analyzes the main subjects of the South Korean TV news contents, the image of characters on the TV news contents, and frames which the TV news contents mainly used. According to the results of this study, the TV news programs represent the positive image of South Korean government whereas they criticize North Korean government while representing North Korean defector issues. However, the TV news programs showed no interest in real problems which the North Korean defectors are experiencing. Further, the findings of this study are very similar to the results of previous studies that were analyzing the representation of news media about minority groups including North Korean defectors. Most studies analyzing how news media represent minority groups show that the groups have been identified not by their own opinions and relations but predominant culture and lifestyles in the society, and they are also represented not by their own voice but predominant perspectives of the society.
