주남저수지 유역의 오염원과 수질변동에 따른 식물플랑크톤 군집 (Phytoplankton Community in Junam Reservoir by Pollution Sources, Loads and Water Quality)

  • This study presented seasonal changes of the phytoplankton community in Junam reservoir by pollution and water quality of the lake. The water storage of the reservoir is 5.3 million ton, most of which are being utilized for agricultural, industrial and residential purposes. The annual precipitation during the investigation period was 1,868.9 mm, increasing by 20% from the average annual level of 1,506.7 mm in 2009. The annual average water storage was 57.3%. It decreased during agricultural season and then increased again after monsoon rainfall. The loads of BOD were $3,799kgday^{-1}$, and 81% of them came from livestock and household. The TN and TP loads were $1,164kgday^{-1}$ and $170kgday^{-1}$, respectively, and 76% of them came from livestock. We assessed water quality of the Junam reservoir using 17 variables. According to the result, the reservoir met the fourth grade, meaning slightly bad, because of high concentration of COD, SS and chlorophyll-a. Eutrophication assessment was conducted by revised Carlson's Index (TSIm, Aizaki), and it was found that the entire lake was eutrophicated with high chlorophyll-a concentration all through the year, except during February to April and in July. A total of 76 phytoplankton species were identified from the samples. Among them, the largest number of species were Chlorophyceae with 33 species(43.4%), followed by Bacilliophyceae with 27 species(35.5%), Cyanophyceae with 8 species(10.5%), and Cryptophyceae with species(10.5%). The total cell number of phytoplankton was the highest in October(7,884 cells $mL^{-1}$) among Cyanophyceae and Bacilliophyceae. The seasonal succession of Chlorophyceae (Chlamydomonas spp.), Cyanophyceae(Microcystis aeruginosa) and Cryptophyceae(Rhodomonas spp.) was observed during January to May, July to September and October to December respectively.

부영양화 평가 방법에 따른 계절별 대청호의 수질분석 (Seasonal Water Quality Analysis in Daecheong Lake by Eutrophication Assessment Methods)

  • This study has evaluated the trophic state in Daecheong Lake by Carlson (1977) method, Aizaki (1981) method, Yang and dickman (1993) method, and Korean trophic state index method. For estimating the trophic state index from each analysis method we use water quality factors such as COD, TN, TP, Chl-a, and SD provided by the water information system and the ministry of environment. The seasonal lake trophic state results denote the mesotrophic state lake from Carlson (1977) method, Aizaki (1981) method, and Korean trophic state index method and the high relation between Carlson (1977) method and Aizaki (1981) method with the coefficient of determination $R^2$ greater than 0.9 for all the seasons. Although Korean trophic index method has relatively weak relation to other methods with the coefficient of determination $R^2$ ranging from 0.419 to 0.701, we propose that Korean trophic index method is suitable for use in domestic lakes since Korean trophic index results show the similar periodicity and tendency with other method results. Hence, Korean trophic index method incorporating domestic lake characteristics is expected to can contribute to seasonal water quality management measures in lakes.

대동호의 시기별 및 계절별 수질변화 평가 (Assessment of Seasonal Variation in Water Quality in Daedong Lake)

  • BACKGROUND: Most lakes have increased concerns about water pollution due to the inflow of non-point sources caused by human activities. Therefore, the lake water quality survey was conducted in order to propose effective plans for water quality management by analyzing the characteristics of lakes and the change of water quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to investigate the physicochemical water quality in Daedong lake, water quality analysis was undertaken from July 2018 to June 2019. Water temperature was ranged from 7.8 to 34.3℃ and pH varied from 6.9 to 10.2. The concentration of Dissolved oxygen, Suspended solid, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) were 5.6 ~ 17.2 mg/L, 2.4 ~ 35.3 mg/L, and 4.5 ~ 15.1 mg/L, and 0.9 ~ 2.8 mg/L, respectively. The Total Nitrogen (T-N) concentration ranged from 0.974 ~ 2.126 mg/L, and Total Phosphorus (T-P) concentration ranged from 0.014 ~ 0.057 mg/L. The Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) ranged from 2.7 ~ 37.9 mg/㎥. Through Carlson TSIm assessment using T-P and Chl-a results, evaluating trophic state, Daedong lake was evaluated as mesotrophic. CONCLUSION: Water pollution management plan needs such as nutrient removal technology and nonpoint source management for prevention of eutrophication in Daedong lake.

Alkaloids of Linderae Radix suppressed the lipopolysaccharide-induced expression of cytokines in cultured macrophage RAW 264.7 cells

  • Linderae Radix, the dry roots of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm, has long been used as traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of inflammatory diseases. The total alkaloids are believed to be the active components responsible for anti-inflammation of Linderae Radix. Here, the total alkaloids of Linderae Radix were extracted and isolated, including 12 isoquinoline alkaloids and 1 furan sesquiterpene. Within the alkaloids, norisoboldine, boldine, linderaline, isoboldine, reticuline, N-methyllaurotetanine, norjuziphine were found to be the major ingredients. In lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, application of Linderae Radix extract, or total alkaloids, suppressed the transcription of proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin-$1{\beta}$ and interleukin-6. Out of the 12 alkaloids, norisoboldine, boldine, and isoboldine were tested in lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophages, and norisoboldine was the strongest alkaloid in suppressing the cytokine expressions. The current studies suggested that the identification of alkaloids from Linderae Radix could provide a plausible explanation for herbal therapeutic functions.

Landsat 8호 영상을 이용한 진양호의 클로로필 a 농도의 공간분포와 영양상태 분석 (Analysis of a Spatial Distribution and Nutritional Status of Chlorophyll-a Concentration in the Jinyang Lake Using Landsat 8 Satellite Image)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the nutritional status of Lake Jinyang using Landsat 8 satellite image band correlated with chlorophyll-a, which is also related to algae proliferation. We selected 20 Landsat 8 images dating from 2013 to 2017, taken close to water quality measurement date when the cloud cover was less than 20 %. Based on the results of the previous studies, analyzing the correlation between chlorophyll-a, and Landsat 8 satellite image band, we selected near infrared wavelength, band 5 which is closely related to the population of algae. The nutritional status was classified using the Aizaki trophic state index (TSIm). The results of the regression equation between band 5 and the observed chlorophyll-a data was used to calculate chlorophyll-a for the image data from 2013 to 2017. The concentration of chlorophyll-a ranged from 3 to $16.1mg/m^3$. To illustrate the spatial distribution of chlorophyll-a within the lake, the chlorophyll-a concentration was divided into five grades. The images on October 14, 2014 and April 10, 2016 showed relatively high value of chlorophyll-a, while January 18, 2015 and December 6, 2016 chlorophyll-a value were below 5. The images on October 14, 2014 and April 10, 2016 were rated as eutrophic status in most areas. The results of simulating water quality for the day when the water quality was not measured resulted to an approximate value for the Panmun station while the Naedong station needed some corrections.

Ginseng extracts modulate mitochondrial bioenergetics of live cardiomyoblasts: a functional comparison of different extraction solvents

  • Background: The root of Panax ginseng, a member of Araliaceae family, has been used as herbal medicine and functional food in Asia for thousands of years. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng is the most widely used "Qi-invigorating" herbs, which provides tonic and preventive effects by resisting oxidative stress, influencing energy metabolism, and improving mitochondrial function. Very few reports have systematically measured cell mitochondrial bioenergetics after ginseng treatment. Methods: Here, H9C2 cell line, a rat cardiomyoblast, was treated with ginseng extracts having extracted using solvents of different polarity, i.e., water, 50% ethanol, and 90% ethanol, and subsequently, the oxygen consumption rate in healthy and tert-butyl hydroperoxideetreated live cultures was determined by Seahorse extracellular flux analyzer. Results: The 90% ethanol extracts of ginseng possessed the strongest antioxidative and tonic activities to mitochondrial respiration and therefore provided the best protective effects to H9C2 cardiomyocytes. By increasing the spare respiratory capacity of stressed H9C2 cells up to three-folds of that of healthy cells, the 90% ethanol extracts of ginseng greatly improved the tolerance of myocardial cells to oxidative damage. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that the low polarity extracts of ginseng could be the best extract, as compared with others, in regulating the oxygen consumption rate of cultured cardiomyocytes during mitochondrial respiration.

Ginsenosides attenuate bioenergetics and morphology of mitochondria in cultured PC12 cells under the insult of amyloid beta-peptide

  • Background: Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the significant reasons for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ginsenosides, natural molecules extracted from Panax ginseng, have been demonstrated to exert essential neuroprotective functions, which can ascribe to its anti-oxidative effect, enhancing central metabolism and improving mitochondrial function. However, a comprehensive analysis of cellular mitochondrial bioenergetics after ginsenoside treatment under Aβ-oxidative stress is missing. Methods: The antioxidant activities of ginsenoside Rb1, Rd, Re, Rg1 were compared by measuring the cell survival and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Next, the protective effects of ginsenosides of mitochondrial bioenergetics were examined by measuring oxygen consumption rate (OCR) in PC12 cells under Aβ-oxidative stress with an extracellular flux analyzer. Meanwhile, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and mitochondrial dynamics were evaluated by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results: Ginsenoside Rg1 possessed the strongest anti-oxidative property, and which therefore provided the best protective function to PC12 cells under the Aβ oxidative stress by increasing ATP production to 3 folds, spare capacity to 2 folds, maximal respiration to 2 folds and non-mitochondrial respiration to 1.5 folds, as compared to Aβ cell model. Furthermore, ginsenoside Rg1 enhanced MMP and mitochondrial interconnectivity, and simultaneously reduced mitochondrial circularity. Conclusion: In the present study, these results demonstrated that ginsenoside Rg1 could be the best natural compound, as compared with other ginsenosides, by modulating the OCR of cultured PC12 cells during oxidative phosphorylation, in regulating MMP and in improving mitochondria dynamics under Aβ-induced oxidative stress.

주암호의 수질 변동 및 생물군집 특성(2011) (Water Quality Variation and Biotic Community Characteristics in Juam Lake (2011))

  • 주암호의 수질변동과 주요 생물 군집 특성을 조사하였다. 수질의 경우, 수온은 $3.8{\sim}21.2^{\circ}C$, 수소이온농도(pH)는 6.7~8.6, 전기전도도는 $64{\sim}76{\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$, 용존산소량(DO)은 $5.3{\sim}13.2mg\;L^{-1}$, 화학적산소요구량(COD)은 $2.5{\sim}3.3mg\;L^{-1}$, 부유물질(SS)은 $1.0{\sim}5.1mg\;L^{-1}$, 총질소(T-N)는 $0.622{\sim}0.841mg\;L^{-1}$, 총인(T-P)은 $0.007{\sim}0.019mg\;L^{-1}$, Chl-a 농도는 $2.8{\sim}8.8mg\;m^{-3}$로 나타났다. 수정 Carlson 지수(TSIm)에 따른 영양단계 평가 결과는 연평균 중영양 상태로 나타났다. 식물플랑크톤 총 출현종수는 53종으로 규조류 28종, 녹조류 13종, 남조류 3종, 기타 9종이 확인되었다. 현존량은 $113{\sim}2,909cells\;mL^{-1}$의 범위를 보였다. 동물플랑크톤 총 출현 종수는 16종으로 출현 분류군별로는 윤충류 10종, 지각류와 요각류가 각각 4종과 2종이 확인되었고 현존량은 $309{\sim}435ind.\;L^{-1}$의 범위로 나타났다. 저서성대형무척추동물은 총 12목 21과 33종으로 1038개체가 출현하였으며, 우점종은 등 줄하루살이였고 아우점종은 두점하루살이로 나타났다. 수생식물은 총 9종으로 정수식물 8종, 부유식물 1종이 확인되었다. 생태계교란야생식물로는 돼지풀과 물참새피가 출현하였다. 어류는 총 30종 613개체가 확인되었다. 한국 고유종은 10종으로 33.3%의 고유도를 나타냈고, 외래도입어종은 3종으로 침투도 10.0%로 나타났다.

섬진강 하류계의 요각류 군집에 관한 생태학적 연구 (Ecological Study of Copepoda Community in the Lower Seomjin River System, Korea)

  • 섬진강 하류계 요각류 군집의 생태학적 연구를 위하여 1998년 2월부터 1999년 7월까지 매달 채집하였다. 본 연구 수역에서 요각류는 21속 32종로 조사되었으며, 1998년 5월에 가장 많은 15종, 1998년 11월에 가장 적은 2종이 출현하였다. 정점별로는 정점 12에서 22종으로 가장 많았으며, 정점 1, 2, 3에서는 유생만 출현하였다. 월별 평균 생물량은 177 ind./m$^{3}$(98년 11월)${\sim}$8.330 ind./m$^{3}$(99월 6월)에서 변동하였다. 수온에 따른 종 분포는 20.1${\sim}$25.0$^{\circ}C$ 범위에서 가장 많은 20종이 출현하였으며, 0.0${\sim}$5.0$^{\circ}C$ 범위에서는 유생시기만 나타났다. 염분도에 따른 종 조성으로는 20.1${\sim}$25.0$\%{o}$ 범위에서 19종, 0.0${\sim}$5.0$\%{o}$ 범위에서 4종으로 각각 최고, 최저 출현분포를 보였다. 부영양화 단계(TSIm)에 따른 종 분포는 빈영양화 단계에서 25종이었으며, 부영양화 단계에서는 9종이 출현하였다. pH에 따른 종 분포로는 7.6${\sim}$8.0 범위에서 20종으로 가장 많은 출현을 보였지만 9.1${\sim}$9.5 범위에서는 출현종이 없었다. 그리고 용존산소량에 따른 분포로는 6.5${\sim}$7.5 mg/l 범위에서 22종, 14.6${\sim}$15.5 mg/l 범위에서 1종이 출현하여 각각 최고, 최저 출현 분포를 나타내었다. 각 환경요인이 요각류 생물량에 미치는 영향으로는 담수역(정점 1${\sim}$정점 4)에서 COD(15.49%), Cl$^{-}$ (25.86%) 그리고 NO$_{2}$-N (19.75%)가 양의 영향을, NO$_{3}$-N (28.30%)가 음의 영향을 미치고 있으며, 기수역(정점 5${\sim}$정점 12)에서는 수온(29.49%), NO$_{3}$-N (28.27%) 그리고 NO$_{2}$-N (22.87%)가 양의 영향을 미치고 있는 반면, 전도도 (30.18%)와 DO (13.53%)는 음의 영향을 미치고 있었다.

제주 수변공간 조명계획을 위한 공원조명 실측과 해석 (Parks' Lighting Measurement and Analysis for Lighting Plan around Waterfront in Jeju)

  • 도시의 환경조명은 야간의 도시를 빛으로 장식하고 미화해서 아름답게 하며, 시민의 안전과 치안을 향상시켜 도시의 품위를 높여 주고 있다. 공원의 조명계획을 수립할 때 공원의 기능이나 성격을 충분히 고려해서 가장 좋은 조명효과를 얻을 수 있도록 조명방식을 이용하는 것이 중요하다. 또한 도시의 야간활동 증대와 경관에 대한 중요성이 높아지는 요즘 도심하천과 해안 수변공간에 대한 경관조명은 기능적인 측면과 더불어 주체성 향상에 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 논문은 수변에 접해 있는 홍콩의 흥험 산책로를 통해 침사추이 산책로 까지 중요 지점에서 조명을 실측 하였고, 일본의 후쿠오카 나카가와 공원을 중심으로 중요 지점으로 파악되는 장소에서 조명 측정을 하였다. 그리고 제주시 함덕해수욕장 진입로 주변과 상가와 인접한 도로를 중심으로 실측하여 조명환경 특성을 비교 분석을 하였다. 분석 결과 홍콩의 경우는 8개 평가항목에서 우수하였고, 후쿠오카의 경우 5개 항목에서 양호함을 보여 보통으로 분석되었다. 그리고 제주시의 경우는 다수의 항목에서 보통과 미흡으로 평가되어 전체적으로 열악한 실정으로 판단되었다. 이를 통하여 지역 주민의 야간 활동을 고양시키고 방문자들에게 아름다운 경관을 제공할 수 있는 제주시 수변공간의 안정적인 조명계획을 제안하고자 한다.
