  • Some test results indicated that the current ASTM grip adapter of GFRP rebar was not successful in developing the design tensile strength of GFRP rebar with reasonable accuracy. It is because the current ASTM grip adapter of GFRP rebar does not take into account the various geometric characteristics of GFRP rebar such as surface treatment, shape of bar cross section, bar deformation as well as physical characteristics such as poisson effect, elastic modulus in the transverse direction and so on. The research reported in this paper is to provide how to proportion an adequate grip adapter to develop design tensile properties of GFRP rebar. The proposed grip adapter is derived from the equilibrium or compatibility equations. From the preliminary test results for rounded GFRP rebar, it was found that the grip adapter with specific size proportioned by proposed method shows the highest tensile strength among them.

  • This study is a part f the research on the coupled vibration of train wheel with stepped thickness and rail. The research was conducted for the purpose of examining the dynamic characteristics of train wheel which considered the effect of rotatory inertia and preventing the vibrations of the high speed railway. The In-plane compressive stresses were computed by the rotation of train wheel and the reaction depending on the condition of rolling. The equation of transverse vibration of the train wheel was obtained by Lagrange's equation. As a result of study, it is known that the effect of rotatory inertia and the increment of thickness ratio, h over bar decrease frequency but the increment of radius ratio, r over bar increase frequency.

  • This paper presents the application of multi-gene genetic programming (MGP) technique for modeling the bond strength of ribbed steel bars in concrete. In this regard, the experimental data of 264 splice beam tests from different technical papers were used for training, validating and testing the model. Seven basic parameters affecting on the bond strength of steel bars were selected as input parameters. These parameters are diameter, relative rib area and yield strength of steel bar, minimum concrete cover to bar diameter ratio, splice length to bar diameter ratio, concrete compressive strength and transverse reinforcement index. The results show that the proposed MGP model can be alternative approach for predicting the bond strength of ribbed steel bars in concrete. Moreover, the performance of the developed model was compared with the building codes' empirical equations for a complete comparison. The study concludes that the proposed MGP model predicts the bond strength of ribbed steel bars better than the existing building codes' equations. Using the proposed MGP model and building codes' equations, a parametric study was also conducted to investigate the trend of the input variables on the bond strength of ribbed steel bars in concrete.

  • The observed distribution of a blending-corrected sample of Einstein ring crossing times, $t_E$, for microlensing events toward the galactic bulge/bar are analyzed. An inspection of the distribution of crossing times suggests that it may be bimodal, indicating that two populations of lenses could be responsible for observed microlensing events. Given the possibility that microlensing in this direction can be due to the two most common classes of stars, main-sequence and white dwarf, we analyze and show via Monte Carlo simulations that the observed bimodality of $t_E$ can be derived from their accepted mass functions, and the density distributions of both stellar populations in the galactic disk and bulge/bar, with a transverse velocity distribution that is consistent with the density distribution. Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) one sample tests shows that a white dwarf population of about 25% of all stars in the galaxy agrees well with the observed bimodality with a KS significance level greater than 97%. This is an expanded and updated version of a previous investigation (Wickramasinghe, Neusima, & Struble, in Mao 2008). • Two cases of surgical correction of funnel chest using metal struts were presented. The main procedures of the method were transverse submammary incision, subperichondrial resection of the deformed costal cartilages, division of the xiphisternal joint, wedge osteotomy of the sternum, freeing of the posterior surface of the sternum and stabilization by means of 2 metal struts. The struts were removed postoperative 3 and 6 months by a small incision under the local anesthesia. The results in both patients were satisfactory. This method of correction is simple, easy to perform and free of any operative risks.

  • A in-situ experiment was performed to evaluate the pullout resistance capacity of chains which is used as a reinforcement of reinforced earth wall. It was also considered that chain was combined with a bar or L-type steel angle by the transverse reinforcement member in the experiment. As a result of experiment, it is expected that chain can be safely used as reinforcements of reinforced earth wall, although it is concerned that a theoretical estimation of the pullout resistance capability of chain is too conservative.

  • In this study, the anchoring performance of 57mm headed bars anchored at the external beam-column joint under cyclic loading was evaluated. A total of 6 external beam-column joint test specimens were planned, and anchorage performance was evaluated by setting concrete compressive strength, side covering thickness, lateral reinforcement ratio, and fracture type as major experimental variables. As result of cyclic loading test, it was found that the factors that had the greatest influence on the anchoring capacity of the large-diameter headed bar anchored at the joint were the side cover thickness and the transverse reinforcing bar. It was confirmed that the 57mm large-diameter headed bar anchored at the external beam-column joint showed sufficient anchoring capacity even under cyclic loading.

  • The analysis of correlation between the 9 element (used as the classification standard of stream typology out of the 25 elements pertinent to the survey of hydromorphological structure) and both emerged benthic macroinvertebrate as well as vegetation indicated that the substrate diversity, curvature, and degree of development of the transverse bar had a high correlation with the species composition. Only COD concentration was found to have the statistically significant correlation with the distribution of benthos among the 12 aquatic and chemical elements. Specifically, the analysis of the biotic and abiotic factors in this study indicated that there was a statistically significant correlation between the sand river and cobble river in the positive(+) and negative(-) aspects, suggesting that there is a distinctive difference between the two types of rivers in terms of hydromorphologlcal structure and ecological characteristics. Therefore, the findings of this study imply that the consideration of a biotop is prerequisite for the evaluation of stream status regarding stream restoration or the ecological topology of streams.
