Denoising which is one of major research topics in the image processing deals with recovering the noisy images. Natural images are well known not only for their local but also nonlocal similarity. Patterns of unique edges and texture which are crucial for understanding the image are repeated over the nonlocal region. In this paper, a nonlocal similarity based denoising algorithm is proposed. First for every blocks of the noisy image, nonlocal similar blocks are gathered to construct a overcomplete data set which are inherently sparse in the transform domain due to the characteristics of the images. Then, the sparse transform coefficients are filtered to suppress the non-sparse additive noise. Finally, the image is recovered by aggregating the overcomplete estimates of each pixel. Performance experiments with several images show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional methods in removing the additive Gaussian noise effectively while preserving the image details.

In this paper a watermarking algorithm is proposed to optimize the capacity of the digital watermark insertion in an experimental threshold using the characteristics of human visual system(HVS), adaptive scale factors, and weight functions based on discrete wavelet transform. After the original image is decomposed by a 3-level discrete wavelet transform, the watermarks for capacity optimization are inserted into all subbands except the baseband, by applying the important coefficients from the experimental threshold in the wavelet region. The adaptive scale factors and weight functions based on HVS are considered for the capacity optimization of the digital watermark insertion in order to enhance the robustness and invisibility. The watermarks are consisted of gaussian random sequences and detected by correlation. The experimental results showed that this algorithm can preserve a fine image quality against various attacks such as the JPEG lossy compression, noise addition, cropping, blurring, sharpening, linear and non-linear filtering, etc.

This paper proposes a new architecture for DCT-based motion estimation and compensation. Previous methods do riot take sufficient advantage of the sparseness of 2-D DCT coefficients to reduce execution time. We first derive a recursion equation to perform DCT domain motion estimation more efficiently; we then use it to develop a wavefront array processor (WAP) consisting of processing elements. In addition, we show that the recursion equation enables motion predicted images with different frequency bands, for example, from the images with low frequency components to the images with low and high frequency components. The wavefront way Processor can reconfigure to different motion estimation algorithms, such as logarithmic search and three step search, without architectural modifications. These properties can be effectively used to reduce the energy required for video encoding and decoding. The proposed WAP architecture achieves a significant reduction in computational complexity and processing time. It is also shown that the motion estimation algorithm in the transform domain using SAD (Sum of Absolute Differences) matching criterion maximizes PSNR and the compression ratio for the practical video coding applications when compared to tile motion estimation algorithm in the spatial domain using either SAD or SSD.

This paper presents an active noise cancelling model using wavelet transform and subband filter banks based on adaptive filter. The analysis filter banks decompose input and error signals into QMF filter banks of lowpass and highpass bands. Each filter bank uses wavelet filter with dyadic tree structure. The decomposed input and error signals are iterated by adaptive filter coefficients of each subband using filtered-X LMS algorithm. The synthesis filter banks make output signal of wideband with perfect reconstruction to prepare adaptive filter output signals of each subband. The analysis and synthesis niter hants use conjugate quadrature filters for Pefect reconstruction. Also, The delayed LMS algorithm model for on-line identification of error path transfer characteristics is used gain and acoustic time delay factors. The proposed adaptive active noise cancelling modelis suggested by system retaining the computational and convergence speed advantage using wavelet subband filter banks.

In this paper, a novel method of minimizing the phase error is proposed. A DP-PLL system using this method is implemented and its performacnce is investigated, too. The DP-PLL system detects the phase error between reference clock and locally generated system clock. The phase difference is then reported as a PEV(Phase Error Variation), which is propoced from the delayted n-tap rising dege clock circuit with 5ns resolution in the phase detector. The algorithm is used to track the optimal DAC coefficients, which are adjusted from sample to sample in such a way as to minimize the PEV. The proposed method is found to have remarkable good potential for fast and accurate phase error tracking characteristic. The algorithm shows good performance to supress the low frequency jitter.-ending points, we design new basis functions based on the Legendre polynomial and then transform the error signals with them. When applied to synthetic images such as circles, ellipses and etc., the proposed method provides, in overall, outstanding results in respect to the transform coding gain compared with DCT and DST. And in the case when applied to natural images, the proposed method gives better image quality over DCT and comparable results with DST.

Sounds based machine fault diagnosis recovers all the studies that aim to detect automatically abnormal sound on machines using the acoustic emission by these machines. Conventional methods that use mathematical models have been found inaccurate because of the complexity of the industry machinery systems and the obvious existence of nonlinear factors such as noises. Therefore, any fault diagnosis issue can be treated as a pattern recognition problem. We propose here an automatic fault diagnosis method of hand drills using discrete wavelet transform(DWT) and pattern recognition techniques such as artificial neural networks(ANN). We first conduct a filtering analysis based on DWT. The power spectral density(PSD) is performed on the wavelet subband except for the highest and lowest low frequency subband. The PSD of the wavelet coefficients are extracted as our features for classifier based on ANN the pattern recognition part. The results show that the proposed method can be effectively used not only to detect defects but also to various automatic diagnosis system based on sound.

In this paper, we propose a deformation technique based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) and a blending technique combining the deformed facial component with the original face for a Virtual Aesthetic Surgery (VAS) system. The deformation technique needs the smoothness and the accuracy to deform the fluid facial components and also needs the locality not to affect or distort the rest of the facial components besides the deformation region. To satisfy these deformation characteristics, The VAS System computes the degree of deformation of lattice cells using RBF based on a Free-Form Deformation (FFD) model. The deformation error is compensated by the coefficients of mapping function, which is recursively solved by the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) technique using SSE (Sum of Squared Error) between the deformed control points and target control points on base curves. The deformed facial component is blended with an original face using a blending ratio that is computed by the Euclidean distance transform. An experimental result shows that the proposed deformation and blending techniques are very efficient in terms of accuracy and distortion.

In this paper, an algorithm using wavelet transform for detecting a cut that is a radical scene transition point, and fade and dissolve that are gradual scene transition points is proposed. The conventional methods using wavelet transform for this purpose is using features in both spatial and frequency domain. But in the proposed algorithm, the color space of an input image is converted to YUV and then luminance component Y is transformed in frequency domain using 2-level lifting. Then, the histogram of only low frequency subband that may contain some spatial domain features is compared with the previous one. Edges obtained from other higher bands can be divided into global, semi-global and local regions and the histogram of each edge region is compared. The experimental results show the performance improvement of about 17% in recall and 18% in precision and also show a good performance in fade and dissolve detection.
Several methods which utilize the phase of Zernike moments (ZMs) to estimate the rotation angle have shown good performance in terms of accuracy. In this paper, we provides the performance comparison results of the existing rotation angle estimation methods based on ZMs and propose an extension of Revaud et al.'s method [1] which utilizes the phase of ZMs; the proposed method uses angular radial transform coefficients instead of ZMs and yields better performance than the ZMs based methods in terms of accuracy. A set of ART can describe angular variation of image more intensively than ZMs, it enables more accurate estimation of the rotation angle than ZMs. In the experiments, the proposed method outperforms ZMs based method. Comparisons were made in terms of the root mean square error vs. the coverage on MPEG-7 shape dataset.

As the increasing HIF(High Impedance Fault) with the arc cannot be easily detected for the low fault current magnitude compared to actual load in distribution line. However, the arcing current shows that the magnitude varies with time and the signal is asymmetric. In addition, discontinuous changes occur at starting point of arc. Considering these characteristics, wavelet transformation of actual current data shows difference between before and after the fault. Althogh raw data(detail coefficient) of wavelet transform may not be directly applied to HIF detection logic in a device, there are several developing methods of HIF monitoring data using the original wavelet coefficients. In this paper, a simple and effective developing methods of HIF monitoring data were analized by using the signal data through an actual HIF experiment to apply them to economic devices. The methods using the sumation of the wavelet coefficient squares in one cycle of the fundamental frequency as the energies of the wavelet coefficeits and the sumation of the absolute values were compared. Besides, the improved method which less occupies H/W resouces and can be applied to field detection devices was proposed. and also Verification of this HIF detection method through field test on distribution system in KEPCO power testing center was performed.
