  • The physical shape of an ultrasound transducer has not been considered in previous studies of the photoacoustic saturation effect, where a photoacoustic signal's magnitude linearly increases as an absorption coefficient increases and it is finally saturated. In this paper, the effect of a spherically focused ultrasound transducer on photoacoustic nonlinearity is investigated. The focused ultrasound transducer's spatial filtering effect on photoacoustic signals is analytically derived considering the combined concept of a virtual point detector and Green function approach. The ultrasound transducer's temporal response (i.e., transfer function) effect on photoacoustic signals is considered by integrating photoacoustic signal values within the absorption area covered by a spatial resolution of the ultrasound transducer. Results from the analytically derived expression show that the magnitude of photoacoustic signals measured by a spherical focused ultrasound transducer shows a maximum at a specific absorption coefficient, and decreases after that maximum point as an absorption coefficient is increased. The origin of this photoacoustic nonlinearity is physically understood by comparing the ultrasound transducer's transfer functions and photoacoustic resonance spectra. In addition, this physical interpretation implies that the photoacoustic nonlinearity is strongly dependent on the irradiance distribution inside an absorption medium.

  • ACROSS device, which is composed of an implantable microphone, a signal processor, and a vibrating transducer, is a fullyimplantable middle ear hearing device(F-IMEHD) for the recovery of patients with hearing loss. And since a microphone is implanted under skin and tissue at the temporal bones, the amplitude of the sound wave is attenuated by absorption and scattering. And the vibrating transducer attached to the ossicular chain caused also the different displacement from characteristic of the stapes. For the gain control of auditory signals, most of implantable hearing devices with the digital audio signal processor still apply to fitting rules of conventional hearing aid without regard to the effect of the implanted microphone and the vibrating transducer. So it should be taken into account the effect of the implantable microphone and the vibrating transducer to use the conventional audio fitting rule. The aim of this study was to measure gain characteristics caused by the implanted microphone and the vibrating transducer attached to the ossicle chains for the gain compensation of ACROSS device. Differential floating mass transducers (DFMT) of ACROSS device were clipped on four cadaver temporal bones. And after placing the DFMT on them, displacements of the ossicle chain with the DFMT operated by 1 $mA_{peak}$ current was measured using laser Doppler vibrometer. And the sensitivity of microphones under the sampled pig skin and the skin of 3 rat back were measured by stimulus of pure tones in frequency from 0.1 to 8.9 kHz. And we confirmed that the microphone implanted under skin showed poorer frequency response in the acoustic high-frequency band than it in the low- to mid- frequency band, and the resonant frequency of the stapes vibration was changed by attaching the DFMT on the incus, the displacement of the DFMT driven with 1 $mA_{rms}$ was higher by the amount of about 20 dB than that of cadaver's stapes driven by the sound presssure of 94 dB SPL in resonance frequency range.

  • Phoborhodopsin (pR or sensory rhodopsin II, sRII; the absorption maximum of ∼ 500 nm) is a retinoid protein and works as a photoreceptor of the negative phototaxis of Halobacterium salinarum. pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR or pharaonis sensory rhodopsin II, psRII) is a corresponding protein of Natronobacterium pharaonis. These sensory proteins form a complex with a cognate transducer protein in the membrane, and this complex transmits the light-signal to the cytoplasm to evoke avoidance reaction from blue-green light. Recently, the functional expression in Escherichia coli membrane of ppR was achieved, which can afford a large amount of the protein and enables mutant studies to clarify the role of various amino acid residues. A truncated transducer which can bind to ppR is also expressed in Escherichia. coli membrane. In this article, we will review properties of ppR mainly using observations of our laboratory; which contains photochemistry (photocycle), light-driven proton uptake, release and transport, F -helix titling during photocycle and association of the transducer.

  • The transient acoustic fields formed by a 3.5 ㎒ curved linear array transducer which is commonly used in ultrasonic medical imaging system for diagnosis of abdomen are systematically analyzed to obtain new design parameters for the better acoustic image. In the analysis with an assumption of radiating waveform, element size, radius of curvature, amplitude apodization are considered as parameters giving constitutive relations with the fields. As simulation results, appropriate new parameters with the reduced curvature and elevation aperture and the apodization of Hamming window, which make an improved acoustic beam with lower side lobe levels than a conventional typical transducer, are obtained.

  • We have experimentally analyzed the self-radiation impedance of an ultrasonic transducer with a square radiation surface that is used as a vibrator in underwater ultrasonic detection systems. The radiation reactance and the radiation resistance were measured in the range from 1 to 3 of ka that is the product of a wave number and a length of the edge of the square vibrator. By comparing the measured results with those of theoretical calculation of the radiation impedance using a series, we confirmed the validity of the experimental method and experimentally confirmed the variation trend in the radiation impedance of the square radiation surface.

  • When a moving piezoelectric transducer detects an object in water, its receiving sensitivity is attenuated by Doppler effect. In this paper, a method for compensating the effect is suggested by using a newly designed condenser of which capacitance is varied according to the moving speed of the transducer. Using the method, the receiving resonant frequency of the transducer can be changed automatically. As a result, there is good agreement between the results of experiment and those of calculation. It is confirmed that the response sensitivity degradation of transducers due to Doppler effect can be compensated in the range of $1{\sim}10^m/_s$ moving speed.

  • As vehicles become more intelligent for convenience and safety of drivers, the in-vehicle networking(IVN) systems and smart modules are essential components for intelligent vehicles. However, for wider application of smart modules and IVN's, the following two problems should be overcome. Firstly, because it is very difficult that transducer manufacturers developed the smart module that supports all the existing IVN protocols, the smart module must be independent of the type of networking protocols. Secondly, when the smart module needs to be replaced due to its failure, only the transducer should be replaced these without the replacement of the microprocessor and network transceiver. To solve these problems, this paper investigates the feasibility of an IEEE 1451 based smart module. More specifically, a smart module for DC motor control has been developed. The module has been evaluated for its delay caused by the IEEE 1451 architecture. In addition, the time required for transducer replacement has been measured.

  • Transducer for ultrasonic linear motor with the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The ultrasonic linear motor consists of two Langevin type piezoelectric vibrators that cross at right angles with each other in tip. In order to excite symmetric and anti-symmetric modes, the transducer must have a phase shift of 90 degree in space and time. Therefore, the tip of transducer moves on an elliptical motion. In this paper, the finite element analysis was used to optimize dimension and displacement of the transducer. The ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the simulated result and the driving characteristics were measured. No-load velocity was 0.28[m/s] and the maximum efficiency was 30[%] in resonance frequency.

  • This paper presents the lousing characteristics and the time. response of ultrasonic focusing transducer which is a coupled system with an electromechanical and an acoustical component. The Finite Element Method and the Hybrid Type Infinite Element Method are applied for the analysis. The position of the focal points and the resolutions is obtained from the loosing characteristics and the time response. It is found that the transducer with the damper, which stabilizes the displacement of the radiation surface, gives a better resolution. In conclusion, the results could be applied to the design and the performance analysis of the ultrasonic focusing transducer.
