This study investigated gender differences in science-related attitude and to analyze association patterns among social factors affecting the differences. The relationships between student's science-related attitude and four variables - schools, teachers, friends and parents influencing the attitude were analysed. The questionnaire, which identifies whether the four variables influence students' science-related attitudes, were specially constructed and simultaneously administered with test of science-related attitudes (TOSRA) to 603 subjects: junior high, and high school students. Both boys and girls were not significantly different at TOSRA scores; however, by multiple regression analysis, the boys' TOSRA scores were influenced by the variable of parents and the girls' scores were influenced by teachers and friends. Social factors evoking gender differences on science-related attitude do not influence equally at everyday life of boys and girls. As the gender differences in science-related attitude decrease, perceptual changes of parents and teachers, the two most influential factors to make the differences should be important to drag females in science-related work as a desired occupation for women.
TGT (teams-games-tournaments) cooperative learning is suggested as a method which enables both the individualized teaching-learning and the small group learning in students-centered open education. This study investigated the instructional effects of the pre-learning program applied by ICT-based TGT cooperative module for science museum excursion regarding of the earth and the moon on the science related attitude according to gender difference in elementary school science class. Three classes of third graders (N=87) at a elementary school were randomly assigned to the ICT-based TGT cooperative learning group, the ICT learning group, and traditional learning group. The students were taught about the planning of exploring the moon in the chapter of the earth and the moon, for 1 class hour. Prior to the instructions, the TOSRA(test of science related attitude) and achievement test were administered. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of the ICT-based TGT cooperative learning group were significantly higher than the other learning groups for most of the TOSRA scales. However, there was a little significant difference among the three groups in the three distinct scales of TOSRA, Normality of Scientists, Leisure Interest in Science, and Career Interest in Science. Advantage/disadvantage and usefulness of ICT-based TGT cooperative learning were also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to explore the measurement of attitude towards science based on social constructivism and the application of this scale. The data were collected using questionnaires from 833 middle school students in the second grade. First, factor analysis were used to assess the construct validity of the scale of Reputation in Culture Border Crossings (R-CBC) developed by Krogh and Thomsen (2005). This finding indicated the construct validity of R-CBC scale based on social constructivism. Second, the correlation among two scales based on social constructivism and Test of Science-Related Attitudes (TOSRA) scale based on individual constructivism were investigated to examine the convergent validity and the discriminant validity. The R-CBC scale was correlated with Simpson-Troost Attitude Questionnaire (STAQ) scale but the R-CBC scale and TOSRA scale were not connected. Third, students' attitude toward science assessed by three forms of measurements were compared according to the choice of high school type. Students' attitude toward science measured by R-CBC scale and STAQ scale were different in three types of high school. This finding indicated that two scales based on social constructivism are useful measurements that can predict the choice of high school type.

Through the systematic analysis on articles about the environment in newspapers, the news reports were considered as effective materials, so after being reconstructed, they were used as learning materials in a lesson on environment contamination which is newly introduced in Earth Science I from the 2009 curriculum revision. To examine students' attitude toward science, before and after NIE application to the students, Test of Science Related Attitudes(TOSRA) as a test tool was carried out which was composed of 7 categories - four optional questionnaires for each category, 28 in total were used. The result was as follows: in a pretest, based upon the average scores by factors the factors ranked from the highest to the lowest as follows: the social meaning of science, the acceptance of the scientific attitude, the commonness of a scientist, the attitude to scientific exploration, the pleasure in science class, the vocational interest in science, the concern over science as a hobby, and in posttest, their ranking as follows: the acceptance of the scientific attitude, the pleasure in science class, the commonness of a scientist, the social meaning of science, the attitude to scientific exploration, the vocational interest in science, the concern over science as a hobby. Also they were all statistically significant at a significant level p<0.05. However, the test revealed that there were some negative effects on the social meaning of science and the attitude to scientific exploration and therefore it is judged that in order to overcome those influences, some bright articles about solving the environment contamination should be applied to the lessons and be complemented effectively by experiments and various media: NIE as well as science magazines, data from Internet search and treatises on science.
The purpose of this study is to develope and apply NIE programs related to sub-chapter 'The Change of Weather and Circulation of Water' in 2nd grade science text book of middle school, and thereby to investigate the effects of NIE approach on science-related attitude and teaming achievement of students, and interaction between treatment methods and students' learning ability. Subjects consisted of 2nd grade students of four classes in a girls middle school located at the southern part of Seoul. Four classes were divided into experimental and control groups by two classes randomly. The experimental groups have been instructed on the related-general concepts for six times and then received seven NIE programs developed by researcher for seven times. The control groups have received the instruction through the conventional teaching method. The NIE learning has been progressed following the steps using in the Iowa Chautaugua Program, e.g. invite, explore, propose explanation and solutions, and take action. NIE programs, e.g. project studying, topic studying and a crossword puzzle have been developed and applied using 'science first' approach of the STS instruction. Twenty questions related to social implications of science and leisure interest in science within seven frameworks of TOSRA have been used in this study as an evaluation instrument of science-related attitude. Learning achievement has been evaluated using an instrument developed by researcher. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. (1) NIE approach was more effective in progressing learning achievement of middle school students than conventional teaching method (p<.01). (2) Experimental groups show statistically significant improvement on science-related attitude than control groups (p<.01). There were no significant interactions between treatment methods and students' learning ability on learning achievement and leisure interest in science. The NIE approach were more effective than the conventional one on social implications of science, especially to low ability students.

The purpose of this survey is to investigate the status on attitudes toward science among the elementary school students in Korea. The attitudes toward science were measured with TOSRA(Test of Science-Related Attitudes) Which was developed by Fraser, B.J.. This survey were male 963 elementary school students of $4^{th}-6^{th}$ in Seoul and Kyeong gi Province as an object. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. The overall attitudes toward science of measured elementary school students shows a positive tendency. 2. Male students exhibited significantly(p<0.001)more positive attitudes toward science than females. 3. There were no differences(p<0.05) between the students in Seoul and Kyeong gi Province in attitudes toward science. 4. Attitudes toward science of elementary school students in this population steadily declined from grade four to grade six. The sharpest decline was seen at grade six.

A survey on the attitudes toward science and science courses was conducted with three hundred students of primary and secondary schools. The instrument used for measuring attitudes was TOSRA(Fraser, 1981). The subjects was sampled by stratified cluster sampling method. The major findings of this study are as follows. 1. The attitude scores has no significant differences among the students of large city, mid-sized city and rural areas. 2. The attitude scores of male and female students has ststistically significant difference. 3. Primary students has significantly higher attitude scores than secondary students. 4. In case of senior high schools, science-major students has significantly higher attitude scores than humanity-major students.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of problem-solving inquiry teaching using concept sketches on conceptual changes about plate tectonics and science-related attitudes. The subjects of this study were two classes of second-year students of K high school located at Anseong in Gyeonggi Province. Before instruction, a conceptual test was conducted to survey student's preconceptions about plate tectonics. The control group took a traditional lesson, while the experimental group was applied to problem-solving inquiry teaching using concept sketches. After the inquiry instruction, TOSRA (Test of Science-Related Attitudes) was administered to find out changes in science-related attitudes of the two groups. The results of this study are as follows. The experimental group understood concepts of plate tectonics better than the control group, which means that problem-solving inquiry teaching using concept sketches was more effective in students' conceptual understanding. Science-related attitudes of the experimental group showed a significant change in the categories of 'normality of scientists', 'pleasure of science lessons', and 'interests on science as a hobby'. In conclusion, the instruction of problem-solving inquiry using concept sketches produced students' positive changes in conceptual understanding about plate tectonics and science-related attitudes.

Purpose of this study is to investigate on the attitude toward science of science gifted and talented(G/T) middle school students. The inventory instrument used for study was a revision of TOSRA which consisted of six domains. Subjects were 131 students who had entered into Center for Science G/T Education, Seoul National University in 1999. This center is composed of five divisions: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science. There was no difference between genders totally, but the attitude level of male was higher than that of female in 'career interest in science' domain. Compared among domains, while the attitude score toward leisure interest in science' was the highest, 'normality of scientist' was the lowest. Whereas the attitude level was no difference among divisions except chemistry, that of chemistry division was higher than mathematics in 'adoption of scientific attitudes' domain. Thus, it is needed to provide social and national encouragement for superior science G/T students as well as to develope special programs for them so as to achieve their dreams and to contribute to scientific development of nations.

There are 27 science education institutes for gifted education institutes in the university with support from the MSIT (Ministry of Science and ICT). Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, and information classes are given in each science education institute for the gifted. The authors developed a curriculum with components of computing thinking for information-gifted students. To determine if the curriculum is effective on the computer scientific attitude of the information gifted, TOSRA was modified and the test was then developed. Information students were educated at K university's science education institute for the gifted with the developed curriculum for one year and the computer scientific attitude of them was tested. According to the test results, there was a significant difference in the computer scientific attitude of the curriculum conducted at the institute at 0.05 level of significance. Statistically significant differences were observed in the social implications of computer science, attitudes of computer scientific inquiry, and the normality of computer technicians at the level of significance of 0.05. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the adoption of computer scientific attitudes, the enjoyment of computer science lessons, leisure interest in computer science, and career interest in computer science.
