  • An interscale transport of the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) is examined in an adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL). The direct numerical simulation data of an APG TBL at Reτ = 834 and β = 1.45 is employed. The TKE and RSS transport equations are divided into large and small scales, leading to the introduction of interscale transport. The TKE mainly transfers from large scales to small ones in the outer region, and vice versa for the RSS. An interscale transport of TKE and inverse interscale transport of RSS are amplified by APG, and the latter results in the increase in large scales of TKE production. Some of outer large scales of enhanced TKE transfer to small scales and then dissipate by viscosity, and the remains dissipate turbulent-non-turbulent interfaces by turbulent transport.

  • Turbulence greatly influence on atmospheric flow field. In the atmosphere, turbulence is represented as turbulent diffusion coefficients. To estimate turbulent diffusion coefficients in previous studies, it has been used constants or 2-level method which divides surface layer and Ekman layer. In this study, it was introduced Smagorinsky method which estimates turbulent diffusion coefficient not to divide the layer but to continue in vertical direction. We simulated 3-D flow model and TKE equation applied turbulent diffusion coefficients using two methods, respectively. Then we showed the values of TKE and the condition of each term to TKE. The results of Smagorinsky method were reasonable. But the results of 2-level method were not reasonable. Therefor, it had better use Smagorinsky method to estimate turbulent diffusion coefficients. We are expected that if it is developed better TKE equation and model with study of computational method in several turbulent diffusion coefficients for reasonably turbulent diffusion, we will able to predict precise wind field and movements of air pollutants.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to elucidate the effects of Trichosanthes kirilowii extract (TKE) on the angiogenesis and growth of tumor cells. Methods : Tube formation assay was performed by using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and anchorage dependent colony assay was performed by using B16-F10 melanoma, Hep G2 and HT1080, CT-26 and SNU-1 cells. Results : For HUVEC, TKE at a level of more than 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ suppresses cell growth. For HUVEC at 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and greater TKE density, the formation of tubes was suppressed in a dose-dependant manner. TKE controls the colony formations of B16-F10 melanoma cells, CT 26 cells, and Hep G2 cells, and its effect is proportional to density. In HT1080 cells and SNU-1 cells, formation is suppressed regardless of density. Conclusions : From these results, it could be concluded that TKE has significant properties on anti-angiogenesis and growth inhibiting of tumor cells. It is suggested that TKE will be a good candidate for new drugs or therapeutics for anti-angiogenesis.

  • At 0843 UTC 30 May 2021, a commercial aircraft encountered severe turbulence at z = 11.5 km associated with the rapid development of Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) in the Gyeonggi Bay of Korea. To investigate the generation mechanisms of Near-Cloud Turbulence (NCT) near the MCS, Weather Research and Forecasting model was used to reproduce key features at multiple-scales with four nested domains (the finest ∆x = 0.2 km) and 112 hybrid vertical layers. Simulated subgrid-scale turbulent kinetic energy (SGS TKE) was located in three different regions of the MCS. First, the simulated NCT with non-zero SGS TKE at z = 11.5 km at 0835 UTC was collocated with the reported NCT. Cloud-induced flow deformation and entrainment process on the downstream of the overshooting top triggered convective instability and subsequent SGS TKE. Second, at z = 16.5 km at 0820 UTC, the localized SGS TKE was found 4 km above the overshooting cloud top. It was attributed to breaking down of vertically propagating convectively-induced gravity wave at background critical level. Lastly, SGS TKE was simulated at z = 11.5 km at 0930 UTC during the dissipating stage of MCS. Upper-level anticyclonic outflow of MCS intensified the environmental westerlies, developing strong vertical wind shear on the northeastern quadrant of the dissipating MCS. Three different generation mechanisms suggest the avoidance guidance for the possible NCT events near the entire period of the MCS in the heavy air traffic area around Incheon International Airport in Korea.

  • The most common approach for computing engineering flow problems at high Reynolds number is still the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations based on turbulence models with wall functions. The recently developed generalized wall functions blending between the wall-limiting viscous and the outer logarithmic relations ensure a smooth transition of flow quantities across two regions. The performances and convergence properties of widely used turbulence models with wall functions that are applicable for turbulence kinetic energy (TKE), turbulent and specific dissipation rates, and eddy viscosity are presented through a series of near wall flow simulations. The present results show that RNG k-𝜖 model should be carefully applied with small tolerance to get the stable solution when the first grid lies in the buffer layer. The standard k-𝜖 and RNG k-𝜖 models are not sensitive to the selection of wall functions for both TKE and eddy viscosity, while the k-ω SST model should be applied together with kL-wall function for TKE and nutUB-wall functions for eddy viscosity to ensure accurate and stable boundary conditions. The applications to a backward-facing step flow at Re=155,000 reveal that the reattachment length is reasonably well predicted on appropriately refined mesh by all turbulence models, except the standard k-𝜖 model which about 13% underestimates the reattachment length regardless of the grid refinement.

  • To clarify the characteristics of TKE (Turbulence Kinetic Energy) variation for offshore wind power development, several numerical experiments using WRF were carried out in three different coastal area of the Korean Peninsula. Buoyancy, mechanical and shear production term of the TKE budget are fundamental elements in the production or dissipation of turbulence. Turbulent kinetic energy of the south coast region was higher than in other sea areas due to the higher sea surface temperature and strong wind speed. In south coast region, strong wind passing through the Korea Strait is caused by channelling effect of the terrain of the Geoje Island. Although wind speed is weak in east coast, because of large difference in wind speed between the upper and lower layer, the development of mechanical turbulence tend to be predominant. Since lower sea surface temperature and smaller wind shear were detected in west coastal region, the possibility of turbulence production not so great in comparison with other regions. The understanding of the characteristics of turbulence in three different coastal region can be reduced the uncertainty of offshore wind construction.

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of turbulence schemes. Turbulence closures are fundamental for modeling the atmospheric diffusion, transport and dispersion in the boundary layer. In particular, in non-homogeneous conditions, a proper description of turbulent transport in planetary boundary layer is fundamental aspect. This study is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and combines four different turbulence schemes to assess if the different schemes have a impact on simulation results of vertical profiles. Two of these schemes are Isotropc Deformation scheme (I.Def) and Anisotropic deformation scheme (A.Def) that are simple local scheme based on Smagorinsky scheme. The other two are Mellor-Yamada scheme (MY2.5) and Deardorff TKE scheme (D.TKE) that are more complex non-local schemes that include a prognostic equation for turbulence kinetic energy. The simulated potential temperature, wind speed and mixing ratio are compared against radiosonde observations from the study region. MY2.5 shows consistently reasonable vertical profile and closet to observation. D.TKE shows good results under relatively strong synoptic condition especially, mixing ratio simulation. Validation results show that all schemes consistently underestimated wind speed and mixing ratio but, potential temperature was somewhat overestimated.

  • The transition of turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) balance along the centerline of the flow unit, which is composed of straight-duct, contraction and free-jet, has been investigated by the hot-wire anemometry. It is found that the mean turbulent kinetic energy is balanced by the dissipation in the internal flow region ; by the production and the dissipation, through contraction ; and by the dissipation, in initial region(X〈8D) of free-jet. But in the developing region (8D〈X〈20D) it is balanced by all of the three(ie, diffusion, production and dissipation). Finally, in the downstream of free-jet, the mean TKE is balanced again by dissipation like as the beginning. The decay-laws along the centerline are checked in the region of free jet as well as in the straightduct. After the developing region of free-jet also exist the decay-laws, the exponent of the axial turbulence being bigger than of the radial.

  • In order to look into the comparative flow characteristics between a circular contraction duct and a circular expansion duct the both centerline turbulent structures have been investigated by the hot wire anemometry. Both of the contraction and the expansion have Morel type contours. Means, turbulences, and triple moments have been measured for the turbulent kinetic energy budgets along their centerlines. It is resulted that mean velocities of both have much deviated from theoretical values calculated by one-dimensional continuity considerations, and that for the same upstream condition, the expansion maintains the isotropy in general while the contraction maintains a severe anisotropy through the whole duct. The mean transport of the TKE along the expansion is willing to balance mostly with the dissipation in the TKE budgets while that along the contraction is balanced with the production in the turbulent kinetic energy equation.
