60% Pt on Vulcan XC-72 with similar Pt sizes to fuel cell grade Pt black was investigated by $\^$13/C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), cyclic voltammery (CV), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experiments were carried out on electrochemically cleaned samples as well as as-received. The TEM and CV results showed that the average particle sizes were changed by cleaning. However, the chemical shift ($\delta$$\_$G/) of $\^$13/C of $\^$13/CO absorbed on Pt surfaces did not show any appreciable variation with particle size change as did in Pt black. These results indicate that a combination of different analytic techniques is essential to understand the properties of the metal particle catalysts and that the presence of carbon black support strongly influences the NMR data, probably through metal-support interaction.
Solder/electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) joint sample which is comprised of dissimilar materials with different mechanical properties has limited the level of success in preparing thin samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This short technical note reports the operation parameters for ultramicrotomy of solder joint sample and TEM analysis results. The solder joint sample was successfully sliced to 50~70 nm thick lamellae at slicing speed of 0.8~1.2 mm/s using a boat-type $45^{\circ}$ diamond knife. Ultramicrotomy can be applied as a routine sample preparation technique for TEM analysis of solder joints.
Microstructural characterizations of II-VI blue laser diodes which consist of quaternary $Zn_{1-x}Mg_xS_ySe_{l-y}$ cladding layer, ternary $ZnS_ySe_{l-y}$ guiding layer and $Zn_{0.8}Cd_{0.2}Se$ quantum well as active layer were carried out using the transmission electron microscope working at 300 kV. Even though the entire structure is pseudomorphic to GaAs substrate, the structure had contained numerous extended stacking faults and dislocations which had created at ZnSe/GaAs interfaces and then further grown to the top of the epilayers. These faults might be expected to cause the degradation and shortening the lifetime of laser devices.
The experiments of laser-guided de discharge were carried out by using pulsed Nd:YAG laser radiation at low air pressure ranging from 0.3 to 20 torr. The minimum laser-guided de discharge voltages($V_{MD}$) at given pressure and distances between anode and cathode electrode were obtained. In order to generate TEM(transverse electromagnetic waves) modes, a pinhole was installed between a rod and a half mirror, and its diameter was adjusted from 6mm to 1.7mm. And then, we investigated the characteristics of laser-guided de discharge corresponding to different TEM modes. As a result, it was found that $V_{MD}$ at $TEM_{00}$ mode was lower than $V_{MD}$ at multimodes.
Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders were prepared by mechnical alloying (MA) in order to develop aircraft structure materials with lighter weight and lower cost than the conventional Ti and Ni alloys. The morphological changes and microstrutural evolution of Al-6wt.%Cr-3wt.%Zr nanocomposite metal powders during MA were investigated by SEM, XRD and TEM. The approximately 50$\mu$m sized Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders has been formed after 20 h of MA. The individual X-ray diffraction peaks of Al, Cr and Zr were broadened and peak intensitied were decreased as a function of MA time. The observed Al crystallite size by TEM was in the range of 20 nm, which is a simliar value calculated by Scherrer equation. The microhardness of Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders increases alomost linearly with increase of the processing time, reaching a saturation hardness value of 127 kg/$mm^2$ after 20 h of processing. The intermetallic compound phase of $Al_3Zr_4$ in the matrix was identifed by XRD and TEM.
The low molecular water-soluble chitosan nanoparticles (LMWSC-NPs) were prepared, which was modified with hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties to evaluate the potential for pharmaceutics application. The synthesis of LMWSC-NPs was identified by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectra. Also, we measured the photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) to investigate the characteristics and morphology of the LMWSC-NPs. At the PCS measurement, the more increase the number of substitutive group, the more decrease the positive charge of LMWSC-NP surface. From the results of TEM and AFM, spherical morphologies were observed, and their sizes were 30-150 nm. Resultantly, LMWSC-NPs prepared in this experiment will be expected as a suitable device for the drug targeting system.

A technique to characterize specific site of materials using a combination of a dedicated focused ion beam system(FIB), and Intermediate-voltage scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) or transmission electron microscope(TEM) equipped with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) unit has been developed. The FIB system is used for preparation of electron transparent thin samples, while STEM or TEM is used for localization of a specific site to be milled in the FIB system. An FIB-STEM(TEM) compatible sample holder has been developed to facilitate thin sample preparation with high positional accuracy Positional accuracy of $0.1{\mu}m$ or better can be achieved by the technique. In addition, an FIB micro-sampling technique has been developed to extract a small sample directly from a bulk sample in a FIB system These newly developed techniques were applied for the analysis of specific failure in Si devices and also for characterization of a specific precipitate In a metal sample.
Detailed studies of high resolution TEM inages on the modulated structure caused by Zn vacancy ordering along [110] direction in BZT sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 90 hours had revealed that the images which had hexagonal patterns were similar to those obtained from the structure which had no modulation, These images had appeared over the wide ranges from -30 nm to -42 nm in defocus values and from 2 nm to 20 nm in thickness. The computer simulated images showed that the modulation due to Zn vacancy ordering had made a small change in contrast in the interior of hexagonal pattern, which was very difficult to differenciate in experiments. The image which demonstrated the modulated structure very well was the one which obtained at -52 nm in defocus value and 16 nm in thickness.
The ${\alpha}-{\beta}$ phase transition of titanium was investigated through in-situ EF-TEM heating experiments. Three different areas of a titanium foil were observed to minimize statistical errors. Systematic recording of diffraction patterns and images was carried out from $RT{\rightarrow}600^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}900^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}RT$ on each area. The following results were obtained: (1) Transition of titanium takes place very rapidly at $900^{\circ}C$. Two phases of titanium, ${\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}$, coexist at this temperature. (2) The transited ${\beta}$-phase appears in the form of twinned plates which are arranged in rotation relationship one another. (3) Analyses of electron diffraction patterns and EDS data indicate that the thermal oxidation layer is gradually formed on the surface of titanium above $900^{\circ}C$, which hinders the reversible ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$ phase transition upon cooling.
Carbon nanotubes and nanowires were prepared by methane pyrolysis over Pd(5)/SPK catalyst by changing oxygen molar ratio in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric condition and also analyzed by SEM and TEM. When the $CH_4/O_2$ molar ratio was 1, carbons were not almost deposited on the catalyst bed support, but when it was 2, carbons were deposited as much as plugging reactor. TEM and SEM images for the deposited carbons showed a number of single-walled carbon nanotubes and carbon nanowires. The growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes produced on the catalyst surface was the tip growth mode. It should be played an important role in carbon nanotubes and nanowires produced on the catalyst bed support to formate the carbon growth velocity vectors and nuclei of ring structure of carbon nanowires. SPK carrier was $N_2$ isotherm of IV type with mesopores, and excellent in the thermal stability.
