  • Cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) allows us to perform structural analysis of a analyses of large protein complexes, which are difficult to analyze using X-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance. The most common examples of proteins used are ribosomes and proteasomes. In this paper, we briefly describe the advantage of cryo-TEM and the process of two-dimensional classification by considering a human proteasome as an example.

  • Material degradation is a multibillion-dollar problem which affects all the industries amongst others. The last decades have seen the development of newer and more effective techniques such as Focused-ion beam(FIB), Transmission electron microscopy(TEM), Secondary-ion mass spectroscopy(SIMS), auger electron spectroscopy(AES), X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) , Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), Photo- stimulated luminescence spectroscopy(PSLS), etc. to study various forms of material degradation. These techniques are now used routinely to obtain information on the chemical state, depth profiling, composition, stress state, etc. to understand the degradation behavior. This paper describes the use of these techniques specifically applied to materials degradation and failure analysis.

  • Methanol oxidation effect on carbon supported Pt was investigated as a function of Pt content in a sample which is closely correlated with Pt particle sizes. After prolonged methanol oxidation the Pt particle size did not change within the experimental error ranges. The $^{13}C$ chemical shift and linewidth of CO adsorbed on Pt show non-linear behavior simply due to the Pt particle size difference. The Pt size variation difference between this work and the previous reports of the particle growths is explained by the experimental temperature difference.

  • Isolated single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using a liquid precursor (xylene) as a carbon source. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy confirmed the isolated structure of the SWCNTs. Micro-Raman measurements showed a tangential G-band peak ($1590cm^{-1}$) and radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks ($150-240cm^{-1}$). The tube diameters determined from the RBM frequencies are in good agreement with those obtained from TEM. The chirality of the isolated SWCNTs could be determined based on the energy of the laser and their diameter. A further preliminary study on the nitrogen doping of isolated SWCNTs was carried out by the simple use of acetonitrile dissolved in the precusor.

  • A new method is developed for analysis of the electromagnetic coupling to an angled two-strip transmission line. It consists of solving the cylindrical transmission line equations an- alytically, and then adjusting the involved parameters to support the cylindrical TEM mode along its equivalent model of the angled two-plate transmission line. Its analytic solution agrees with the numerical value obtained by using the circuit-concept approach.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), PVA/Montmorillonite (MMT), PVA/Silver (Ag), and PVA/MMT/Ag nanocomposite nanowebs were prepared by electrospinning technique in aqueous solution. In order to investigate the effect of inorganic materials on the morphology and thermal properties of PVA based nanocomposite nanowebs, experiments were performed with 5 wt.% of MMT and Ag. Field emission type scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), reflection type X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analyzer were utilized to characterize nanocomposite nanowebs. TEM and XRD results show MMT and Ag were well dispersed in PVA nanowebs. Those inorganic nanoparticles enhanced thermal property of the nanocomposite nanowebs.

  • A cyclotetraphosphazene derivative having eight chains was synthesized from octachlorocyclotetraphosphazene, which was employed along with cholesterol for the preparation of vesicles. The resulting vesicles were characterized by TEM and encapsulation efficiency. The stability of the vesicles was enhanced in the presence of dihexadecylphosphate.

  • The work reported in this paper relates to preparation and characterization of carbon nanomaterials by CVD method on different substrates by decomposition of certain hydrocarbons at 550-$800^{\circ}C$ using a horizontal quartz tube reactor. Monometallic and bimetallic catalyst system of iron and nickel were used for the preparation of different carbon nanomaterials. The influence of various parameters such as substrate/catalyst preparation parameters, the nature of substrate, catalyst concentration, reaction time and temperature on the growth, yield and alignment of carbon nanotubes has been studied. The characterization of carbon nanomaterials has been carried out using SEM, TEM and TGA. The carbon nanomaterials developed were vertically aligned on a large area of flat quartz substrate.

  • Thin epilayer structures of GaAs/AlAs/InGaAs, grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy, were investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Image in the [110] zone axis was taken and compared with the calculated images. The supercell structure which contains GaAs, AlAs and InGaAs layers was designed and was employed in the image calculation with MacTempas computer program. Good agreement was shown between experimental image and a set of calculated images with varying defocus and sample thickness.
