There have been a lot of approaches to evaluate and predict transmission control protocol (TCP) performance in a numerical way. Especially, under the recent advance in wireless transmission technology, the issue of TCP performance over wireless links has come to surface. It is because TCP responds to all packet losses by invoking congestion control and avoidance algorithms, resulting in degraded end-to-end performance in wireless and lossy systems. By several previous works, although it has been already proved that overall TCP performance is largely dependent on its loss recovery performance, there have been few works to try to analyze TCP loss recovery performance with thoroughness. In this paper, therefore, we focus on analyzing TCP's loss recovery performance and have developed a simple model that facilitates to capture the TCP sender's behaviors during loss recovery period. Based on the developed model, we can derive the conditions that packet losses may be recovered without retransmission timeout (RTO). Especially, we have found that TCP Reno can retransmit three packet losses by fast retransmits in a specific situation. In addition, we have proved that successive three packet losses and more than four packet losses in a window always invoke RTO easily, which is not considered or approximated in the previous works. Through probabilistic works with the conditions derived, the loss recovery performance of TCP Reno can be quantified in terms of the number of packet losses in a window.

Overall TCP performance represented by end-to-end throughput is largely dependent upon its loss recovery performance. In particular non-congestion packet losses caused by transmission errors degrade TCP performance seriously. Using Markov process, we analyze TCP loss recovery performance for correlated packet losses caused by multipath fading. The results show that loss recovery performance can be severely affected by burstiness in packet losses, even if overall packet loss ratio is very low.

TCP typically offers reasonable end-to-end performance to users regardless of the bandwidth and error characteristics of particular network technology, The robustness of TCP has contributed to its success in the internet environment. The role of communications is already well established in the office environment. With the advent of cheap, affordable broadband communications and the increasing complexity of consumer goods, it seems natural to extend the network into homes. In-home networking means a high-speed communication among the digital appliances within a home. Introduction of application over high-speed home network using TCP/IP protocol is increasing. The integrated environment of internet and home network is demanding as well. We have validated TCP model over high speed home network environment, investigated the throughput behavior of TCP over IEEE 1399 home networks, and evaluated a potential solution for high performance of TCP over IEEE 139t home networks. The simulation model has produced several interesting results in the performance of TCP over IEEE 1394 home network.

An implementation scheme and some improvements are proposed to adopt public-licensed operating system, Linux and de-facto world-wide network standard, TCP/IP into the field of behavior-based autonomous mobile robots. To demonstrate the needs of scheme and the improvement, an analysis is performed on a server/client communication problem with real time Linux previously proposed, and another analysis is also performed on interactions among TCP/IP communications and the performance of Linux system using them. Implementation of behavior-based control architecture on real time Linux is proposed firstly. Revised task-scheduling schemes are proposed that can enhance the performance of server/client communication among local tasks on a Linux platform. A new method of TCP/IP packet flow handling is proposed that prioritizes TCP/IP software interrupts with aperiodic server mechanism as well. To evaluate the implementation scheme and the proposed improvements, performance enhancements are shown through some simulations.
We have analyzed the performance of TCP in the CDMA mobile communications systems with the adaptive modulation and coding(AMC). The wireless channel using AMC is characterized with not high error rate but highly varying bandwidth. Due to time-varying bandwidth, timeout events of TCP occurs more frequently, which leads to the throughput degradation. The analysis model is composed of the two parts. In the first part, we divide TCP packet stream into ‘packet groups’and derive the probability distribution of the wireless transmission time of each Packet group that reflects the time varying characteristics of AMC. In the second part, we formulate embedded Markov chain by making use of the results of the first part to model TCP timer mechanism and wireless transmission. Since our system model is characterized by the forward link high speed data transmission using AMC, the results reported in this paper can be used as a guideline for the design and operation of HSDPA, 1xEV-DO, and 1xEV-DV.
Ad-Hoc networks consist of a set of mobile hosts that communicate using wireless links, without the use of other communicate support facilities (such as base stations). The topology of an Ad-Hoc network changes due to the movement of mobile host. which may lead to sudden packet loss. Recently, a large amount of research has focused on the routing protocols needed in such an environment. but researches about Internet traffic performance analysis were unexhausted. Accordingly, we have simulated Ad-Hoc mobile network that using AODV routing protocol and Ad-Hoc mobile network topology size and node speed as simulation estimation-factor to analysis traffic performance. As the result of the simulation, we identify that TCP /Reno was more sensitive than TCP/Sack about node speed and a number of the node.

Improving TCP performance has long been the focus of many research efforts in 802.11 wireless networks study. Hop count and Round Trip Time (RTT) are the critical sources which serious affect the TCP performance on end to end connection. In this paper, we analytical derived the affection and based on the analysis we propose TCP should Change its Expected Value (TCP-CEV) when hop count and RTT change by setting a reasonable CWND change rate to improve the performance. The proposed scheme is applicable to a wide range of transport protocols using the basic TCP mechanism, and the protocol behavior is analytically tractable. We show that our simple strategy improves TCP performance at least over 12% in a chain topology, 4.9% in a grid topology and improve the TCP convergence.

With the development of wireless data communication technology, all IP-based network will become compositions of wired and wireless networks. TCP is a connection-oriented, reliable transport protocol and has been used as de facto standard in most wired networks. Because TCP's congestion control algorithm could not distinguish congestion from BER, link failure and frequent route changes, TCP shows a poor performance over mobile ad-hoc networks. In this paper, the theoretical feature of TCP was studied and the performance of TCP over mobile ad-hoc networks was analyzed with ns2.

There have been several efforts to avoid unnecessary retransmission timeouts (RTOs), which is the main cause for TCP throughput degradation. Unnecessary RTOs can be classified into three groups according to their cause. RTOs due to multiple packet losses in the same window for TCP Reno, the most prevalent TCP version, can be avoided by TCP NewReno or using selective acknowledgement (SACK) option. RTOs occurring when a packet is lost in a window that is not large enough to trigger fast retransmit can be avoided by using the Limited Transmit algorithm. In this Paper, we comparatively analyze these schemes to cope with unnecessary RTOs by numerical analysis and simulations. On the basis of the results in this paper, TCP performance can be quantitatively predicted from the aspect of loss recovery probability. Considering that overall performance of TCP is largely dependent upon the loss recovery performance, the results shown in this paper are of great importance.
In this paper, we present a cross-layer analysis of wireless TCP systems over correlated channels. The effects of error correlation on the behavior of link retransmission strategy and the end-to-end throughput of TCP layer are investigated. Based on the cross-layer analysis, an efficient refinement of link layer protocol is proposed by consciously utilizing the information of channel correlations, which leads to the performance improvement of wireless TCP systems.
