TCP-Friendly Rate Control Scheme Based on the RTP (RTP 기반의 TCP 친화적인 전송률 조절 기법)

  • 최근 오디오나 비디오 스트리밍과 같은 멀티미디어 트래픽이 증가하고 있다. 이러한 트래픽들은 패킷을 전달하는데 대부분 UDP(User Datagram Protocol)기반의 RTP(Realtime Transport Protocol)를 사용한다. 하지만 UDP기반의 RTP는 기본적으로 혼잡제어 메커니즘이 없으며 현재 인터넷의 주요 트래픽인 TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)와의 형평성을 보장하지 않는다는 문제점을 갖는다. 본 논문에서는 스트리밍 트래픽의 TCP 친화적인 전송률 조절 기법으로 TF-RTP(TCP-Friendly RTP)를 제안하였다. TF-RTP는 네트워크 상태가 혼잡하여 패킷 손실이 발생할 경우, 개선된 파라미터들을 사용하여 경쟁하는 TCP의 전송률을 보다 정확하게 계산하여 스트리밍 트래픽의 전송률을 조절함으로써 경쟁하는 TCP 트래픽과 친화적으로 동작하며 네트워크 대역폭을 보다 공평하게 사용하게 된다. 실험을 통해 제안한 TF-RTP가 TCP의 전송률을 보다 정확하게 계산하며 TCP 친화성, 공평성 측면에서도 성능 개선을 보임을 확인할 수 있었다.

A Traffic Conditioning Mechanism for Enhancing the Fairness of TCP and UDP Flows (TCP 와 UDP 흐름의 공평성 향상을 위한 트래픽 조절 메커니즘)

  • Differentiated services network (DiffServ) aims to provide the same service to a group of connections that have similar Quality of Service requirements. One of the essential function to realize DiffServ is the traffic conditioning mechanism. The paper proposes the enhanced traffic conditioning mechanism which can assure the reserved rates of TCP and UDP flows and support fair distribution of excess bandwidth. The simulation results show that the new mechanism is rather insensitive of the effect of UDP against TCP throughput, and performs better both in terms of throughput assurance and fair distribution of excess bandwidth in case of well-provisioned and over-provisioned network environment.

  • The most popular world wide web traffic in the Internet uses TCP as the transport layer protocol. Since TCP utilizes the single path, it can not communicate with the correspondent host during the link-down. On the other hand, SCTP can still communicate with the other SCTP entity by using alternate path even while the primary path is down. Most of previous studies have conducted the performance comparison research between TCP and SCTP by using typical file transfer. Since web traffic with self-similarity is characterized by the packet inter-arrival times and shape parameter affecting the size of web file in the Pareto distribution, it is necessary to perform the experiments considering these parameters. This paper aims to compare the throughput between TCP and SCTP while varying parameters reflecting the web traffic characteristics in link-down environment. Experimental results for web traffic using NS-2 simulator show that the throughput of SCTP using multi-homing is better than that of TCP. Simulation also shows that TCP is more affected than SCTP by mean inter-arrival and shape parameters with regard to the web traffic. These results can be applied to estimate the performance variation of web traffic due to the duration of link-down.

Efficient Video Streaming Based on the TCP-Friendly Rate Control Scheme (TCP 친화적인 전송률 제어기법 기반의 효율적인 비디오 스트리밍)

  • The multimedia traffic of continuous video and audio data via streaming service accounts for a significant and expanding portion of the Internet traffic. This streaming data delivery is mostly based on RTP with UDP. However, UDP does not support congestion control. For this reason, UDP causes the starvation of congestion controlled TCP traffic which reduces its bandwidth share during overload situation. In this paper, we propose a new TCP-friendly rate control scheme called 'TF-RTP(TCP-Friendly RTP)'. In the congested network state, the TF-RTP exactly estimates the competing TCP's throughput by using the modified parameters. Then, it controls the sending rate of the video streams. Therefore, the TF-RTP adjusts its sending rate to TCP-friendly and fair share with competing TCP traffics. Through the simulation, we prove that the TF-RTP correctly estimates the TCP's throughput and improves the TCP-friendliness and fairness.

Receiver-Initiated Slow Start for Improving TCP Performance in Vertical Handoff (수직적 핸드오프에서의 TCP 성능향상을 위한 수신자기반 슬로우스타트)

  • The performance of TCP depends on the degree of traffic congestion between the sender and the receiver. The traffic could increase, and this causes congestion which may cause trouble in data transfer. Then, TCP tries to eliminate the trouble by reducing the transfer speed with slowstart scheme. When a mobile node moves over heterogeneous wireless networks, TCP experiences dramatic change of the amount of traffic, and it performs slowstart. In this paper, we propose the efficient scheme of TCP slowstart that should performs after vertical handoff. In this scheme, TCP receiver forces slowstart, which is different form normal schemes. Its performance is better than the normal schemes in that TCP sender experiences traffic congestion and performs slowstart. We perform simulation to measure and to verify the improved performance.

  • 초고속 통신의 실현과 다양한 멀티미디어 서비스를 위한 TCP/IP 통신의 전송 메카니즘으로서 ATM이 널리 사용되고 있다. TCP층과 ATM층의 상호작용이 TCP층 뿐만 아니라 ATM층에도 영향을 미쳐 처리율과 공정성의 성능이 저하되므로, ATM상의 TCP 트래픽 파라미터, 즉 TG(timer granularity)와 윈도우 크기를 적절하게 조정함으로써 TCP 흐름제어가 ABR 율제어와 상호작용하지 않는다. 그 결과로 상호작용의 영향을 최소화할 수 있으며, TCP의성능향상을 가져올 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 윈도우 크기와 TG와 같은 TCP 파라미터를 조절하여 VBR서비스상에서의 TCP 트랙픽의 성능평가를 통해 높은 처리율과 공정성을 나타내었다.

  • In this paper, low-rate TCP attack as one of shrew attacks is considered and the scaling based dynamic time warping (S-DTW) algorithm is introduced. The low-rate TCP attack can not be detected by the detection method for the previous flooding DoS/DDoS (Denial of Service/Distirbuted Denial of Service) attacks due to its low average traffic rate. It, however, is a periodic short burst that exploits the homogeneity of the minimum retransmission timeout (RTO) of TCP flows and then some pattern matching mechanisms have been proposed to detect it among legitimate input flows. A DTW mechanism as one of detection approaches has proposed to detect attack input stream consisting of many legitimate or attack flows, and shown a depending method as well. This approach, however, has a problem that legitimate input stream may be caught as an attack one. In addition, it is difficult to decide a threshold for separation between the legitimate and the malicious. Thus, the causes of this problem are analyzed through simulation and the scaling by maximum auto-correlation value is executed before computing the DTW. We also discuss the results on applying various scaling approaches and using standard deviation of input streams monitored.

Traffic Throughput on based Link Available in M-TCP Transfer (M-TCP 전송에서 링크 이용율에 따른 트래픽 처리)

  • 무선네트워크 TCP는 패킷손실을 혼잡에 의한 것으로 보고 전송률을 감소시키는데, 고대역폭 연결의 효율성을 높이기 위해 M-TCP에서의 링크이용율에 따른 트래픽 처리를 연구한다. M-TCP는 무선네트워크에서 연결 중단이 자주 발생하고 동적으로 변하는 대역폭으로 인한 비트율이 낮은 무선 링크에 효과적인 프로토콜이다. 연견 중단 시 송신노드가 인접한 경우나 멀리 떨어져 있는 경우 유리하며, M-TCP가 링크 계층 솔루션과 함께 사용될 경우 TCP 성능이 향상된다. 본 논문에서는 백그라운드 트래픽 흐름은 그대로 유지하여 M-TCP상에서 연결의 개수를 늘린 후 그 결과 발생하는 대역폭 공유 반응 및 링크 이용율로 M-TCP 연결로부터 생긴 트래픽 처리를 분석한다.

Estimation of TCP Throughput Fairness Ratio under Various Background Traffic (다양한 백그라운드 트래픽이 존재하는 경우의 TCP 공정성 비율 측정)

  • TCP packets occupy over 90% of current Internet traffic thus understanding of TCP throughput is crucial to understand Internet. Under the TCP congestion regime, heterogeneous flows, i.e., flows with different round-trip times (RTTs), that share the same bottleneck link will not attain equal portions of the available bandwidth. In fact, according to the TCP friendly formula, the throughput ratio of two flows is inversely proportional to the ratio of their RTTs. It has also been shown that TCP's unfairness to flows with longer RTTs is accentuated under loss synchronization. In this paper, we show that, injecting bursty background traffic may actually lead to new type of synchronization and result in unfairness to foreground TCP flows with longer RTTs. We propose three different metrics to characterize traffic burstiness and show that these metrics are reliable predictors of TCP unfairness.

  • 오늘날 네트워크 환경은 다양한 응용의 등장으로 트래픽이 복잡 다양해지고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 정확한 네트워크의 상태 파악을 위한 트래픽의 응용 별 분류에 대한 중요성은 더욱더 증가하고 있다. 최근 트래픽 플로우의 통계 정보를 이용한 트래픽의 응용 별 분류 방법론에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 하지만 대부분의 연구들은 TCP 세션의 이상 동작에 대한 고려가 없어 분류결과의 오분류 및 미분류가 발생할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 TCP 세션의 이상동작의 문제점을 지적하고 이를 개선하는 방법론을 제안한다. 제안된 방법론을 통계적 응용 트래픽 분류방법에 적용함으로써 그 타당성을 증명한다.
