  • Introduction: Although it is well known that medical students are not getting an adequate amount of sleep, there have been only few studies on the sleep patterns of medical students in Korea. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the life style and sleep patterns of Korean medical students and the impact they have on the students' academic performance. Methods: A questionnaire package was administered to the $3^{rd}$ year medical students at the Seoul National University to examine their sleep patterns on weekdays and weekends. It consisted of questions asking about their lifestyles as well as Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and GPA (Grade Point Average) that are considered relevant to their sleep patterns. A total of 110 students (85 males and 25 females, mean age $24.4{\pm}20.6$) responded to the survey and the result was analyzed using the independent t-test, the chi-square test, the paired t-test, Pearson's rank correlation and ANOVA. P-values of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant in all analyses. Results: The weekend bedtime was significantly delayed (01:24 on weekday;03:12 on weekend; t=-5.23, p<0.01), the weekend rise time was delayed (07:36 on weekday;10:30 on weekend ; t=-24.48, p<0.01) and the total sleep time was increased on weekends (5:57 on weekday;8:17 on weekend ; t=15.94, p<0.01). They wished to sleep for 7 hours 6 minutes which was different from their actual weekday total sleep time (t=-11.41, p<0.01). The poor sleeper group had lower GPAs than the good sleeper group (t=2.05, p<0.05). The GPA of medical students were negatively correlated with age (r=-0.23, p<0.05), daily amount of smoking (r=-0.78, p<0.01), total amount of smoking (r=-0.75, p<0.01), weekday sleep latency (r=-0.23, p<0.05), weekend sleep latency (r=-0.23, p<0.05) and PSQI score (r=-0.30, p<0.01). Conclusion: Medical students were experiencing a lack of sleep during weekdays as they have a later bedtime and earlier rise time, and consequently had more hours of sleep on weekends. Overall, the responded students were experiencing poor sleep quality, and the GPAs of the poor sleeper group were lower than those of the good sleeper group.

  • It is required to analyze the controlled response of air temperature in greenhouse according to control techniques for precise control. In this study, a mathematical model was established for air heating of greenhouse with hot-water heating system The parameters of the model were decided by regression analysis using reference data measured at the greenhouse being heated In the simulation for the digital control of air temperature in the greenhouse, the mathematical model to evaluate the control performances was used. Tested control methods were ON-OFF contpol, p control, rl control and PID control. The mathematical model represented by inside air temperature ( T$_{i}$), hot-water temperature (T$_{w}$) in heating pipe and outside air temperature (T$_{o}$) was expressed as a following discrete time equation ; T$_{i}$($textsc{k}$+1)= 0.851.T$_{i}$($textsc{k}$)+0.055.T$_{w}$($textsc{k}$)+0.094.T$_{o}$($textsc{k}$) Control simulations for various control methods showed the settling time, the overshoot and the steady state nor as follows; infinite time, 3.5$0^{\circ}C$, 3.5$0^{\circ}C$ for ON-OFF control : 30min 2.37$^{\circ}C$, 0.51$^{\circ}C$ for P control; 21min, 0.0$0^{\circ}C$, 0.23$^{\circ}C$ for PI control; 18min 0.0$0^{\circ}C$, 0.23$^{\circ}C$ for PID control, respectively. PI and PID controls appeared to be optimal control methods. There was no effect of differential gain on the heating process but much effect of integral gain on it.on it.

  • Age and growth of Dictyosoma burgeri, sampled in the costal waters off Sanyang, Tongyeong, Ky$\breve{o}$ngnam during December 1992∼November 1993, were studied by otolith reading. Examination of outer margins of the otolith showed that the opaque zone as annulus was formed once a year with being mainly configured in November. Spawning period was estimated from January to March, with a peak in Feburary. Growth of the fish was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's equation as $L_t=23.5977(1-e^{-0.2542(t+2.1302)})$, $W_t=64.5892(1-e^{-0.2542(t+2.1302)})^{2.3002}$, where $L_t$ is total length in ㎝, $W_t$ is total weight in g and t is age.

  • A former study has shown that the spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$) in cancerous prostate tissue had enhanced contrast at an ultra-low magnetic field, $132{\mu}T$. To study the field dependence and the origin of the contrast we measured $T_1$ in pairs of ex-vivo prostate tissues at the Earth's magnetic field. A portable and coil-based nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system was adopted for $T_1$ measurements at $40{\mu}T$. The $T_1$ contrast, ${\delta}=1-T_1$ (more cancer)/$T_1$(less cancer), was calculated from each pair. Additionally, we performed pathological examinations such as Gleason's score, cell proliferation index, and micro-vessel density (MVD), to quantify correlations between the pathological parameters and $T_1$ of the cancerous prostate tissues.

  • The immune correlate of host resistance induced by reinfection of Trichinella spiralis remains unclear. In this study, we investigated immune correlates between the resistance and serum IgG antibody level, $CD23^+$ $IgM^+$ B cells, and eosinophil responses induced by T. spiralis reinfection. Mice were primarily infected with 10 or 100 T. spiralis larvae (10 TS, 100 TS), respectively, and after 4 weeks, they were challenge infected with 100 T. spiralis larvae (10-100 TS, 100-100 TS). Upon challenge infections, 10-100 TS mice induced significantly higher levels of T. spiralis-specific total IgG antibody responses in sera and antibody secreting cell responses in spleens compared to 100-100 TS mice, resulting in significantly reduced worm burdens in 10-100 TS mice (60% and 70% reductions for adult and larvae, respectively). Higher levels of eosinophils were found in mice primarily infected with 10 TS compared to those of 100 TS at week 8 upon challenge. $CD23^+$ $IgM^+$ B cells were found to be increased significantly in mice primarily infected with 10 TS. These results indicate that primary infection of 10 larvae of T. spiralis, rather than 100 larvae, induces significant resistance against reinfection which closely correlated with T. spiralis-specific IgG, eosinophil, and $CD23^+$ $IgM^+$ B cell responses.

  • In recent years, solar energy PV/T research has been actively pursued by complementing solar heat acquisition and solar energy acquisition, and PV/T energy efficiency is generally excellent. In this study, the annual energy demand is calculated based on one building, and the energy production when PV / T installed on the roof and the energy production when PV are installed are compared and analyzed by simulation case. In conclusion, Busan which is the southern province in Korea, has the largest amount of energy generation, and introducing the concept of sharing surplus energy, excluding energy demand from generation. As a result, it can be supplied up to 3.3 households.

  • Purpose: Synbiotics can alleviate some intestinal pathologies or prevent trigger mechanisms for some diseases such as celiac disease (CD). If patients with high levels of anti-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies have normal duodenal histology, they are followed as potential CD patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of synbiotic use on the blood levels of anti-tTG antibodies in children. Methods: Eighty-two patients with high anti-tTG levels were included in this study. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. The synbiotic group was treated with a daily dose of a synbiotic including multi-strain probiotics for 20 days. The control group was not administered any medication. Anti-tTG values at baseline and repeat measurements and the percentage change in anti-tTG levels between groups were compared. Results: The anti-tTG level at baseline was 36 U/mL (interquartile range [IQR], 26.4-68 U/mL) in the synbiotic group, and it decreased significantly to 13 U/mL (IQR, 6.5-27.5 U/mL) after 20 days (p<0.05). The anti-tTG level at baseline was 46 U/mL (IQR, 31-89 U/mL) in the control group, which also decreased significantly to 23 U/mL (IQR, 7-41 U/mL) after 20 days (p<0.05). Anti-tTG levels exhibited 73% and 56% decreases in the synbiotic and control groups, respectively (p<0.05). Conclusion: It may be speculated that a synbiotic supplementation can contribute to decreasing anti-tTG levels in children with potential CD.

  • Open IoT platform that shares communication infrastructure and provides cloud resources can flexibly reduce development period and cost of smart service. In this paper, as an open IoT platform, we propose a virtual IoT system based on edge computing that implements a virtual IoT device for a physical IoT device and allows service developers to interact with the virtual device. A management server in the edge cloud, near the IoT physical device, manages the creation, movement, and removal of virtual IoT devices corresponding to the physical IoT devices. This paper define the operations of the management server, the physical IoT device, and the virtual IoT device, which are major components of the virtual IoT system, and design the communication protocol required to perform the operations. Finally, through simulations, this paper evaluate the performance of the edge computing based virtual IoT system by confirming that each component performs the defined states and operations as designed.
