  • Medical image segmentation is the process by which an original image is partitioned into some homogeneous regions like bones, soft tissues, etc. This study demonstrates an automatic medical image segmentation technique based on independent component analysis. Independent component analysis is a generalization of principal component analysis which encodes the higher-order dependencies in the input in addition to the correlations. It extracts statistically independent components from input data. Use of automatic medical image segmentation technique using independent component analysis under the assumption that medical image consists of some statistically independent parts leads to a method that allows for more accurate segmentation of bones from CT data. The result of automatic segmentation using independent component analysis with square test data was evaluated using probability of error(PE) and ultimate measurement accuracy(UMA) value. It was also compared to a general segmentation method using threshold based on sensitivity(True Positive Rate), specificity(False Positive Rate) and mislabelling rate. The evaluation result was done statistical Paired-t test. Most of the results show that the automatic segmentation using independent component analysis has better result than general segmentation using threshold.

  • In this study, the sustainability of Abies nephrolepis in the presence of Tripterygium regelii was analyzed. To accomplish this, a field survey of140 stands was conducted. Based on the presence or absence of T. regelii, as well as the layer in which it was present (where appropriate), the type of T. regelii presence wasclassified as follows: TP type, indicating the presence of T. regelii in the tree and sub-tree layers; SP type, indicating its presence in the shrub layer; and A type, indicatingits absence from all layers. The indicator species analysis revealed T. regelii to be an indicator species of the TP type and SP type. The MRPP test was used to examine the differences among the types. Moreover, the seedling and DBH class analysis indicated there to be a difficulty in terms of the status competition, as the number of young trees generated by A. nephrolepis was the lowest in the TP type. The findings of this study enhanced our understanding of the vegetation structure of A. nephrolepis, thereby contributing to efforts concerningits conservation and management.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects and define the educational strategies of the cyber education offered to students for Bachelor of Science degree program(RN-BSN). The participants in this study were 67 students in two courses, Growth and Development, and Nursing Process. The main components of the cyber classes were the electronic board and on-line discussion board. The study was conducted from March 4, 2001 to July 23, 2001 at Y University in Seoul, Korea. To examine the effects of the cyber education, learning motivation, and learning satisfaction were measured by questionnaires to the students before the initial class and after completing the class. Learning achievement was measured by the grades for each course. The data were analyzed using frequencies, t-test, and paired t-test. The specific results of the course evaluation were compared and analysis was done to examine differences between traditional classroom teaching and cyber teaching. The study results are as follows: 1. There were no significant differences on total scores for learning motivation between pre-cyber education and post-cyber education. However, there were significant decreases in the post test compared to the pre test for the items, ' I'd like to get as high a score as possible compared to other students (t=-2.20, p=.03)' and ' I'm sure to acquire good grades(t=-5.22, p=.00) '. 2. The average score for learning satisfaction using cyber education was high at 3.52. 3. To define learning achievement using cyber education, grades for students taking cyber classes this year were compared to student grades for a class using traditional lassroom teaching last year. The score was significantly higher for classroom students in the 'Growth and Development' course (t=-3.5, p<.001), and the score was significantly higher for the cyber education students in the 'Nursing Process' course (t=4.3, p<.000). 4. The average of post scores on computer competency was significantly higher on six items, general knowledge about computers, data management and data research, ability to communicate using computer, and internet surfing. On the basis of the above findings, this study suggests that cyber education in nursing courses is effective and readily available. However, it is recommended that consideration be given to characteristics of the course when developing cyber education programs for nursing courses.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study is to determine possibility of application of in vivo proton ($^1H$) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in distinguishing cystic mass arising around pancreas by comparison of in vivo MRS, in vitro MRS using 3T MR machine, based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Materials and Methods : We obtained spectra of in vivo MRS, in vitro MRS and NMR from abdominal mass arising around pancreas (mucinous cystic neoplasm=5, intraductal papillary mucin producing tumor=5, pseudocyst=1, and lymphangioma=1). We estimated existence of peak of in vivo MRS, and in vitro MRS concordant to that of NMR. We also evaluated differential peak for predicting specific disease. Results : Correlation of presence of peak with NMR showed showed sensitivity of 29.6%, specificity of 82.6% and accuracy of 67.7% on in vivo MRS (p = 0.096, McNemar test), sensitivity of 57.1% and specificity of 92.6% and accuracy of 82.3% on in vitro MRS (p = 0.362, McNemar test). The spectra of NMR for IPMT showed more frequent peaks at 3.5-4.0 ppm (p=0.026). Conclusion : Although chemical analysis, using NMR could be regarded as possible tool to differentiate cystic masses, in vivo and in vitro MRS need further technical evolution for clinical application.
