A Study on the boiler efficiency with selecting the uppermost burners in the 870MW opposite wall fired boiler (870MW 대향류 보일러에서 최상부층 버너 선택운전에 따른 보일러 효율변화 고찰)

  • In this study, the boiler efficiency and the change of boiler combustion state with the burner operation of the uppermost layer of 870MW opposite fired coal boiler were measured. Test results showed that the boiler efficiency was high in the order of the uppermost layer simultaneous operation of the front and rear burners, the front burner, and the rear burner operation. When the front and rear burners were operated simultaneously, the heat absorption rate of water walls in the boiler furnace was uniform at four side, and the temperature deviation of the left and right steam on the convection front surface decreased. As the heat absorption rate of the boiler improved, the loss of boiler exhaust gas decreased and the coal supply amount decreased by 8 tons/hour compared to the operation of the rear burner. This will contribute not only to the reduction of fuel cost but also to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Most of the fossil power plants firing lower grade coals are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. The poor combustion conditions are directly related to the gas flow deviation in upper furnace and convection tube-bank but a less reported issue related to in large-scale oppose wall fired boilers. In order to develop a on-line combustion monitoring system and suggest an alternative heat flux estimation method at tube bank, which is very useful information for boiler design tool and blower optimizing system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' temperature and tube metal temperature were monitored by using a spatially distributed sensors grid which located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule region. At these locations. the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. Test results showed that the flue gas monitoring method is more proper than metal temperature distribution monitoring for real time combustion monitoring because tube metal temp. distribution monitoring method is related to so many variables such as flue gas, internal flow unbalance, spray etc., Heat flux estimation at the tube bank with flue gas temp. and metal temp. data can be alternative method when tube drilling type sensor can't able to use.

  • The boiler feed-water pump controllers which can be applied to 500MW class coal fired power plants was developed. The validity of the developed controllers was shown via the applied test result in a power plant. It is expected that the developed controllers are used to retrofit the existing controllers that have surpassed their expected service life and have limited spare parts, and contributes to the stable operation of plants. Based on the collected data and analysis, new control schemes were developed and implemented during the overhaul period in the new control systems. During normal operation, feed water could be supplied to the boiler with the capability of the 1600t/h flow without any problems in automatic mode of controllers. In this study, the feed-water pump controllers were developed successfully. In addition, it is expected that the developed controllers can make the plant operation more stable and can be applied to a lot of power plants.

Study on the Improvement of Weld-joint Reliability in Waterwall Tubes of the Ultra Supercritical Coal Fired Boiler (석탄화력발전용 초초임계압(USC) 보일러 수냉벽 튜브 용접 신뢰성 향상에 대한 연구)

  • The low alloy-steel material(1.0Cr-0.5Mo, SA213T12), which has widely been used for the waterwall tube in the conventional power plant, do not have enough creep rupture strength for waterwall tubes of the Ultra-supercritical(USC) boilers. According to this reason, the high-strength low alloy-steel(2.25Cr-1.0Mo, SA213T22) has newly been adopted for the waterwall tube in the USC boilers. This paper presents failure analysis on weld-joint of the waterwall tubes in USC boilers. Visual inspections were performed to find out the characteristics of the fracture. Additionally both microscopic characteristics and hardness test were carried out on failed tube samples. Failures seem to happen mainly because the welding process has not been conducted strictly.(preheating, P.W.H.T and so forth). Thus, this paper has the purpose to describe the main cause of the poor welding process and to explain how to prevent similar failures in those weld-joints.

  • The aim of this study is to research applicable possibility or Dry Sorbent Injection Technique(DSI) in sox removal process using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) software package. It will be applied for 500MW in capacity coal-fired thermal power plant operated by South Korea N. Power Co., Ltd. The DSI process is adapted between a preheater and an EP process in the technological assembly. The numerical analysis performs in predicting and optimizing of DSI process's characteristics, which consists of structure of duct, position of injection nozzles, injection speed, and dispersion of sorbent. Computing results are shown that degree of sorbent dispersion depends on structure of duct and position of injection nozzles strongly. The highest dispersion efficiency was obtained when we set a Lobed-plate inside the duct and 6 injection nozzles on the duct(4 injection nozzles at the corners and 2 injection nozzles on upper and under walls as a rectangle duct shape). We also know that change of injection speed of sorbent doesn't have an large effect on the sorbent dispersion but it can effect to drop pressure.

A Case Study on the Reduction of Noise and Vibration at the Backpass Heat Surface in the Power Plant Boiler (발전용 보일러 후부 전열면 소음진동 저감에 관한 연구)

  • The resonance of boiler is caused by exciting force in the gas path and it generates the vibration by the harmony of boiler's dimensional factor. According to trending toward the boiler of increasing capacity and a bigger size, it has a problem of the vibration at back-pass heating surfaces. We can predict such vibrations as comparison between vortex frequency and gas column's natural frequency. We can't rely on the method for the past decades because of changing parameters, such as an allowable error, gas temperature, gas velocity, Strouhal number. We can reduce the vibration to use the seasoning effect and change the operating condition in coal fired boiler but it's not essential solution. When the vibration occurred in the model boiler, we must measures the acoustic pressure and frequency of places for considering the means. So far, we confirmed the problem from field measures and theoretical analysis about the acoustic vibration of boiler. We installed anti-acoustic baffle in a existing boiler to change the acoustic natural frequency at the cavity, which results in reducing the acoustic vibration. The first, we prove that the acoustic resonance is caused by harmonizing vortex shedding frequency of tube heat surface with acoustic natural frequency of cavity in the range of 650~750 MW loads. The second, the acoustic resonance at the back-pass heating surface has the third order of acoustic natural frequency at the second economizer. We install five anti-acoustic baffles at the second economizer to reducing the resonance. We confirm considerably reducing the acoustic vibration of boiler during the commercial boiler.
