  • The mammalian immune system comprises a complex array of cells and molecules that interact to provide protection from pathogenic microorganisms. The beneficial role played by lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides in humans, including their effect on the immune system, has been extensively reported. Lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides, which are present in dairy products, are frequently used as nutraceuticals to improve some biological functions in the host. Activation of the systemic and secretory immune response by lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides requires many complex interactions among the various constituents of the intestinal ecosystem. Thus, the aim of this review was to examine in detail the immunological potential of lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides.

  • Castleman's disease is a relatively rate disorder of lymphoid tissue and poorly understood etiology. The disease may occur anywhere along the lymphatic chain, but is most commonly found as a solitary mass in the mediastinum. The hyaline vascular type represents 91% of Castlemen's disease, and these are most often discovered in the asymptomatic patient on routine chest film. Patients with the plasma cell type often exhibit systemic symptoms, including fever, night sweats, anemia, and hypergammaglobulinemia. Surgical excision effects cure, although resection of the hyaline vascular type may be associated with significant hemprrage owing to extreme vascularity. We recently experienced a case of hyaline vascular type Castleman's disease which was treated by surgical resection through the anterior mini-thoracotomy, and report with its review.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to achieve a qualitative understanding of childcare teachers' cooperation experiences with Nuri curriculum teaching assistants. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative research design. Participants comprised 23 childcare teachers working with Nuri curriculum teaching assistants. Focus group interviews were conducted to discuss their cooperation experience with the teaching assistants. Qualitative themes analyses were carried out following individual-level analyses, group-level analyses, and cross-group-comparisons. Results and Conclusion: The results showed that childcare teachers, at first, had low expectation for Nuri curriculum teaching assistants because they have ambiguous job descriptions. However, the teachers' actual interactions exhibited cooperation effects on improving the quality of childcare. Childcare teachers suggested the ways to promote cooperation between childcare teachers and Nuri curriculum teaching assistants at individual and systemic levels.

  • Treatments for alopecia areata include topical corticosteroid treatment, corticosteroid intralesional injection, systemic corticosteroid treatment, PUVA(psoralen-UVA) and topical immunotherapy. The therapeutic effects are variable. Alopecia totalis is hard to treat completely. Topical immunotherapy with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), squaric acid dibutyl ester (SADBE) or diphenylcyclopropenone (diphencyprone, DPCP) represents the most accepted therapeutic modality for the treatment of extensive alopecia areata. We report two cases of alopecia totalis treated with DPCP. After DPCP treatment, total scalp hair was completely recovered.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop nursing outcome indicators based on nursing activities done for stroke patients. Method: focus group meeting and delphi technique, which consisted of clinical nurse experts, neurologist, and nursing professors. CVI(Index of Content Validity) and user validity test was performed. Result: 12 nursing diagnoses, 29 nursing interventions and nursing outcomes were identified. The former were from NIC and the latter were developed according to nursing interventions. They were verified by experts in focus group. 199 nursing activities were identified, 133 nursing outcome indicators were developed. In user validity, usefulness and usability were tested. Conclusion: This systemic approach of measuring nursing outcomes verified nurses' positive effects in changing patients health status and nursing contributions in the health care system as a profession.

  • Itch is one of the most distressing sensations that substantially impair quality of life. It is a cardinal symptom of many skin diseases and is also caused by a variety of systemic disorders. Unfortunately, currently available itch medications are ineffective in many chronic itch conditions, and they often cause undesirable side effects. To develop novel therapeutic strategies, it is essential to identify primary afferent neurons that selectively respond to itch mediators as well as the central nervous system components that process the sensation of itch and initiate behavioral responses. This review summarizes recent progress in the study of itch, focusing on itch-selective receptors, signaling molecules, neuronal pathways from the primary sensory neurons to the brain, and potential decoding mechanisms based on which itch is distinguished from pain.

  • Epidural steroid injection is a treatment for low back pain which allows smaller doses with less risk of side effects and longer duration of relief than systemic administration. From 1 June 1992 to 31 January, 1994, 1 mg/kg of triamcinolone diacetate in 8 ml of lidocaine 1% was administered 56 times to 33 patients who complained of low back pain. Results of epidural steroid injection provided effectiveness in treating various low back pain diseases except postlaminectomy syndrome. However there are no gains about repeated epidural steroid injection.

  • The action of serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptamine) on the excretory function of the kidney was investigated in the dog, utilizing the clearance method and the stop-flow technique. It was shown that serotonin, $10{\mu}g/kg/min$, i. v., exerts a marked antidiuretic effects and elicits a marked hemodynamic changes in the kidney: a highly significant decrease of the glomerular filtration rate and a tendency of decrement in the renal plasma flow. Little change in the systemic blood pressure was noted, and the participation of the antidiuretic hormone in the antidiuretic action was ruled out by adding vasopressin to the infusion fluid. The stop-flow analysis showed that there is no evidence of altered activity in the tubules by serotonin. It was thus concluded that serotonin elicits anti diuresis in the dog by decreasing glomerular filtration rate, which results from the constriction of Vas afferens in the glomeruli.
