  • The optimal gain design method of a three-phase boost converter is proposed in this study. The control system has a two-loop configuration, in which each controller is coupled closely; thus, the optimal design is difficult to achieve using conventional gain-tuning method. The proposed method is adopted to the MATLAB SISO TOOL software and is based on the controller requirements, which are phase margin and cut-off frequency of the open-loop system. The optimal proportional -integral gains can be designed easily using the proposed interactive method of the SISO TOOL. The performance of the proposed system is verified through simulation and experiments.

  • The increased demand for conventional energy sources, and international oil price rises are driving societies toward research and development of renewable energy. A large number of their installations and penetrations will bring an instability distribution power system. Also, load concentration problem at specific time can cause the shortage of power reserve margin. To deal with these problems, the development of energy storage systems (ESS) is required. This paper proposes the 1MW grid-connected ESS with Li-ion battery and power conditioning system (PCS). The performances of the 1MW grid-connected ESS are evaluated and verified with the PSCAD/EMTDC based simulation test.

  • A parameter space approach for robust control system design is developed by reducing several design specifications to sign definite conditions. It is shown that the gain and phase margin constraints for the parametric perturbed plant hold if and only if the four Kharitonov systems satisfy the margins. On pole location, it is shown that D-stability of convex combinations (1-t)p(s)+tq(s) can be determined by the coefficients corresponding to p(s) and q(s) based on the sign definite condition. We show a method of PI-type robust control system design as a useful example.

  • The parallel trabutary signals in the SDH-based transmission system have the frame phase skew due to uneven transmission delays in the data and the clock path. This phase skew must be eliminated prior to synchronously multiplexing process. A new twenty-four channel, 51.84Mb/s DFPA(Digital Frame Phase Aligner) has been designed and fabricated in 0.8.mu.m CMOS gate array. This unique device phase-aligns the skewed input signals with refernce frame synchronous signal and reference clok for subsequent synchronous multiplexing process. the performance of fabricated device is evaluated by the STM-16 transmission system and DS-3 meansurement set. The frame phase margin of +2/-3 bit periods has been demonstrated.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for determining critical generator lists using accelerating power and synchronizing power coefficient (SPC), and critical generator group (CGG) from CGG candidates, which is a combination of critical generators. The accurate determination of CGG provides a more accurate energy margin while providing system operator with information of possible unstable generator group. Classical transient energy function (TEF) method selects the critical generators with big corrected kinetic energy of each generator at the moment of fault removal. However, the generator with small acceleration after fault, that is, the generator with small corrected kinetic energy, is also likely to belong to CGG if the generator has small synchronizing power. The proposed algorithm has been verified to be effective compared with the classical TEF method. We utilized the power system of Korean Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) as a test system.

  • This paper proposes a new width control system composed of an ANWC(Automatic Neural network based Width Control) and a fuzzy-PID controller in hot strip finishing mills which aims at obtaining the desirable width. The ANWC is designed using a neural network based width prediction model to minimize a width variation between the measured width and its target value. Input variables for the neural network model are chosen by using the hypothesis testing. The fuzzy-PlD control system is also designed to obtain the fast looper response and the high width control precision in the finishing mill. It is shown through the field test of the Pohang no. 1 hot strip mill of POSCO that the performance of the width margin is considerably improved by the proposed control schemes.

  • MW-class gas turbines are suitable for distributed generation systems such as community energy systems(CES). Recently, biogas is acknowledged as an alternative energy source, and its use in gas turbines is expected to increase. Steam injection is an effective way to improve performance of gas turbines. This study intended to examine the influence of injecting steam and using biogas as the fuel on the operation and performance a gas turbine combined heat and power (CHP) system. A commercial gas turbine of 6 MW class was used for this study. The primary concern of this study is a comparative analysis of system performance in a wide biogas composition range. In addition, the effect of steam temperature and injected steam rate on gas turbine and CHP performance was investigated.

  • A critical speed analysis of oxidizer pump was peformed for a 7 ton class liquid rocket engine as the third stage engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II. Based on the previously developed experimental 30 ton class turbopump and presently developing 75 ton class turbopump for the first and second stage rocket engine of Korea Space Launch Vehicle II, a layout and configuration of the 7 ton class turbopump rotor assembly are determined. A ball bearing stiffness analysis and rotordynamic analysis are performed for both of the bearing unloaded condition and loaded condition. Structural flexibility of the oxidizer pump casing is also included to predict critical speeds. From the numerical analysis, it is confirmed that the rotor system acquires sufficient separate margin of critical speed as a sub-critical rotor even though decrease of critical speed due to the casing structural flexibility.

  • The structural analysis of liquid rocket engine was performed in the case of sinusoidal vibration load to verify structural safety. The finite element model is composed with main liquid rocket engine components, combustion chamber, turbopump, gas-generator, pyro-starter, main pipes, main valve, heat-exchanger, gimbal-mount and brackets. Natural vibration mode analysis and structural analysis for sinusoidal vibration load were performed. The natural mode frequency of liquid rocket engine is twice than that of launch vehicle. In the case of stress result of sinusoidal vibration load, the part of maximum stress has 1.4 margin, so the engine structure is safe for sinusoidal vibration load.
