  • Investigation of structural integrity has been a critical issue in the field of civil engineering for years. Visual inspection is one of the most available methods to explore deteriorative components in structures. Still, this method is not applicable to invisible damage of structures. Alternatively, system identification methods are capable of tracking modal properties of structures over time. The deviation of these dynamic properties can serve as indicators to access structural integrity. In this study, a modal tracking technique using frequency-domain system identification from seismic responses of structures is proposed. The method first segments the measured signals into overlapped sequential portions and then establishes multiple Hankel matrices. Each Hankel matrix is then converted to the frequency domain, and a temporal-average frequency-domain Hankel matrix can be calculated. This study also proposes the frequency band selection that can divide the frequency-domain Hankel matrix into several portions in accordance with referenced natural frequencies. Once these referenced natural frequencies are unavailable, the first few right singular vectors by the singular value decomposition can offer these references. Finally, the frequency-domain stochastic subspace identification tracks the natural frequencies and mode shapes of structures through quick stabilization diagrams. To evaluate performance of the proposed method, a numerical study is carried out. Moreover, the long-term monitoring strong motion records at a specific site are exploited to assess the tracking performance. As seen in results, the proposed method is capable of tracking modal properties through seismic responses of structures.

  • This study pertains to the extraction of the road noise component of signals from a vehicle's interior noise via the traditional frequency domain and time domain system identification methods. For road noise extraction based on the frequency domain system identification method, the appropriate matrix inversion strategy is investigated and causal and non-causal impulse response filters are compared. Furthermore, appropriate data lengths for the frequency domain system identification method are investigated. In addition to the traditional road noise extraction methods based on frequency domain system identification, a new approach to extract road noise via the time domain system identification method based on a parametric input-output model is proposed and investigated in the present study. In this approach, instead of constructing a higher order model for the full-band road noise, input and output signals are processed in the subband domain and lower order parametric models optimal to each subband are determined. These parametric models are used to extract road noises in each subband; the full band road noise is then reconstructed from the subband road noises. This study shows that both the methods in the frequency domain and the time domain successfully extract the road noise from the vehicle's interior noise.

  • A novel three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) forced vibration system has been developed for identification of aeroelastic (self-excited) load parameters used in time-domain response analysis of wind-excited flexible structures. This system is capable of forcing sinusoidal motions on a section model of a structure that is used in wind tunnel aeroelastic studies along all three degrees of freedom - along-wind, cross-wind, and torsional - simultaneously or in any combination thereof. It utilizes three linear actuators to force vibrations at a consistent frequency but varying amplitudes between the three. This system was designed to identify all the parameters, namely, aeroelastic- damping and stiffness that appear in self-excited (motion-dependent) load formulation either in time-domain (rational functions) or frequency-domain (flutter derivatives). Relatively large displacements (at low frequencies) can be generated by the system, if required. Results from three experiments, airfoil, streamlined bridge deck and a bluff-shaped bridge deck, are presented to demonstrate the functionality and robustness of the system and its applicability to multiple cross-section types. The system will allow routine identification of aeroelastic parameters through wind tunnel tests that can be used to predict response of flexible structures in extreme and transient wind conditions.

  • Continuous-time controller design is proposed using feedback system identification in frequency domain. System stability imposed by a new controller is checked in the function of a conventional closed-loop system, instead of a poorly modeled plant due to non-linearity and disturbance as well as unstable components, etc. The stability of the system is evaluated in view of Nyquist stability. All the equations are formulated in the framework of the discrete-time system. Simulation results are shown on the plant with input saturation and DC disturbance.

  • In this paper, we investigate a set-membership identification approach to the quantification of an upper bound of model uncertainty in frequency domain, which is required in the H$_{\infty}$ robust control system design. First we formulate this problem as a set-membership identification of a nominal model error in the presence f unknown noise input with unknown bound, while the ordinary set-membership approaches assume that an upper bound of the uncertain input is known. For this purpose, the proposed algorithm includes the estimation of the bound of the uncertain input. thus the proposed method can obtain the hard bound of the model error in frequency domain as well as a parametric lower-order nominal model. Finally numerical simulation results are shown to confirm the validity of the presented algorithm..

  • Model Based Compensator(MBC) is recently used for the analysis of multi-variable control in frequency domain. Target loop is designed by the demanding requirements such as cross-over frequency, disturbance rejection in low frequency domain, zero steady-state error, identification of maximum and minimum singular values and sensor noise rejection in high frequency domain. Loop transfer recovery will be continued in frequency domain until the plant with MBC comes close to the target loop. In this study, the technique using MBC is applied to the elevator vibration control system. It is found that this technique is very effective to control the vibration system.

  • A method based on frequency domain approaches is presented for the nonlinear parameters identification of structure having nonlinear joints. The finite element model of linear substructure is us ed to calculating its frequency response functions needed in parameter identification process. This method is easily applicable to a complex real structure having nonlinear elements since it uses the frequency response function of finite element model. Since this method is performed in frequency domain, the number of equations required to identify the unknown parameters can be easily increased as many as it needed, just by not only varying excitation amplitude but also selecting excitation frequencies. The validity of this method is tested numerically and experimentally with a cantilever beam having the nonlinear element. It was verified through examples that the method is useful to identify the nonlinear parameters of a structure having arbitary nonlinear boundaries.

  • Moving force identification is a very important inverse problem in structural dynamics. Most of the identification methods are eventually converted to a linear algebraic equation set. Different ways to solve the equation set may lead to solutions with completely different levels of accuracy. Based on the measured bending moment responses of the bridge made in laboratory, this paper presented the time domain method (TDM) and frequency-time domain method (FTDM) for identifying the two moving wheel loads of a vehicle moving across a bridge. Directly calculating pseudo-inverse (PI) matrix and using the singular value decomposition (SVD) technique are adopted as means for solving the over-determined system equation in the TDM and FTDM. The effects of bridge and vehicle parameters on the TDM and FTDM are also investigated. Assessment results show that the SVD technique can effectively improve identification accuracy when using the TDM and FTDM, particularly in the case of the FTDM. This improved accuracy makes the TDM and FTDM more feasible and acceptable as methods for moving force identification.
