Assessment of Usability of Webstorming System in Space Design Process (공간디자인 프로세스에서 웹스토밍 시스템의 활용성 평가)

  • The present thesis is to concretize process stages and methods for effective use of online CGTS(creative group thinking system), or the web-storming program, in space design and to propose a support system for idea generation specific to space design. For the purpose of this study, activity factors in space design process and functional factors of the web-storming program were written into an interaction matrix, which was used for a questionnaire survey on correlations. Then, the results of the interaction matrix were visualized and analyzed following the procedure of observation-interpretation-application. The analysis found that the schematic design stage is most correlated where close collaboration is performed in the process of space design and that differences in correlation arise upon division of work. As such, the present study proposed 'provision of media for ideas in accordance with specific process and UI optimization' as a means of improving usability in schematic design that is closely correlated and suggested an idea to enhance the applicability of web-storming system in division of work.

The Development of a Consulting Assisting System for Interior Design (인테리어 디자인을 위한 相談 補助 시스템의 開發)

  • With the improved quality of life standards interior design is recently gaining more concerns than ever before. This requires more well organized and standardized business and marketing in the field. Consequently, a few interior design firms concern about computerizing their marketing process to do this. This paper focuses on developing a computerized consulting system assisting interior design. For this a standardized consulting process is developed. The process includes the input of customer's information, surveying customer's preferences on interior design styles, estimation and budget adjustment, suggesting packages and interior items, and printing consulting results. The system developed is valuable in three different viewpoints: First, from the customer's view it can be a decision-making tool. Second, from the consultant's point of view it is a front-end marking tool. Third, it is an information collector from the viewpoint of an interior design firm.

  • In the automobile industry, the design of optimal blank shape becomes a significant part of the stamping. It provides many evident advantages, sush as enhancement of formability, reduction of material cost and product development period. However, the nesting process, required for the optimal usage of materials in the blanking becomes more complicated as the blank shape becomes complicated, like most optimal blank shape. In this study, stamping process optimization system for the optimal usage of material has been developed through the integration of optimal blank design and optimal nesting. For optimal blank design, a radius vector method, the modified version of the initial nodal velocity method, the past work of the present author, have been proposed. Both the optimal blank design and optimal nesting programs have been developed under the GUI environment for the convenience of engineers. The efficiency of the optimization system has been verified with some chosen problems.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find the preconditions of BIM based new design process. As BIM technology improves, investigating new design process will become a greater priority. Our traditional, linear and fragmented design process is not freed from a long-pending questions of poorly coordinated drawings and low production efficiencies. Rather the traditional process is one of the major causes of such issues of low productivity. AIA and NIST proposed new design process to fulfill clients' need for fast and precise delivery recently. The common goal of these two should be better, faster and more precise project delivery created by integration. And we need to create collaborative concurrent design process to optimize the design efforts, But our local AE industry's circumstances are quite different with foreign countries. Therefore, integrated project system cannot be adopted as it stands in foreign countries. This paper will investigate preconditions to expedite the progress of BIM based design process in Korea.

Optimal Process Design of Onboard BOG Re-liquefaction System for LNG Carrier (LNG 운반선을 위한 BOG 재액화시스템 최적 설계)

  • High-pressure gas injection engines (HPGI) took center stage in LNG carrier propulsion systems after their advent. The HPGI engine system can be easily modified to include a re-liquefaction system by adding several devices, which can significantly increase the economic feasibility of the total system. This paper suggests the optimal operating conditions and capacity for a re-liquefaction system for an LNG carrier, which can minimize increases in the total annualized cost. The installation of a re-liquefaction system can save 0.23 million USD per year when the cost of LNG is 5 USD/Mscf. A sensitivity analysis with different LNG costs showed that the re-liquefaction system is profitable when the LNG cost is higher than 3.5 USD/Mscf.

  • In this paper, for constructing the Korean Hazard Information System (KHIS), we conceptually design a hazard evaluation process. We first deal with a hazard evaluation process focused on flood hazard to give the most immense damage and loss. The hazard evaluation process is consist of a damage evaluation process and a loss evaluation process, and is used for transforming hazards from natural disasters into economic measures. The proposed process is developed based on the famous FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)'s $HAZAS^{@MH}$methodology. We modify the FEMA's process to be mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive, that is all losses from the hazards are included into the estimation process but the losses are not duplicated in the process. In addition to this, we define the loss process specifically by considering the characteristics from the hazard environments of Korea. We can expect that KHIS for evaluating economic losses from natural hazards can be developed based on the conceptual design for the economic loss evaluation process, and KHIS can be used as a useful tool for analyzing the feasibilities of mitigation plans in central/local governments.

Design of an Algorithm to Simulate Surface Roughness in a Turning for an Integrated Virtual Machine Tool

  • The fundamental issues to evaluate machine tool's performance through simulation pertain to the physical models of the machine tool itself and of process while the practical problems are related to the development of the modular software structure. It allows the composition of arbitrary machine/process models along with the development of programs to evaluate each state of machining process. Surface roughness is one of the fundamental factors to evaluate machining process and performance of machine tool, but it is not easy to evaluate surface roughness due to its tribological complexity. This paper presents an algorithm to calculate surface roughness considering cutting geometry, cutting parameters, and contact dynamics of cutting between tool and workpiece as well as tool wear in turning process. The designed virtual machining system can be used to evaluate the surface integrity of a turned surface during the design and process planning phase for the design for manufacturability analysis of the concurrent engineering.

An Argument-based Approach to Manage Collaborative Negotiations in Software Systems Design

  • To manage collaborative negotiation in software system design, we have built a socio-technical argument-based negotiation management approach by integrating a Socio-technical Co-construction Process (STCP) with an Argument-based Negotiation Process (ABNP). This paper reviews relevant research work and presents each step of this approach. The STCP provides rich contextual information of technical decisions and social interactions in a system design process. The ABNP provides STCP with a negotiation management and conflict resolution strategy by guiding software engineers to generate, exchange and evaluate their argument claims in negotiation activities. In addition, this paper describes a prototype system which implements this new approach using the advanced Web-based software technologies with the goal of demonstrating how to systematically enhance the negotiation management capabilities in a dynamic socio-technical framework.

  • Decision process for length dimension in the mechanical system design process has been studied with a washing machine transmission as a model. The results are, (i) the length dimensions of the non-shaft elements are independent of other elements, (ii) the length dimensions of the shaft elements are dependent on the dimensions of the non-shaft elements located inside and outside of that elements, (iii) the length dimensions of the inner shaft elements are dependent on those of the outer shaft elements located parallel, (iv) the length dimensions of the shaft elements located serial are independent of each other.

  • To provide more rational design solutions at conceptual design level, axiomatic design method has been applied to solve critical part of a new engineering problem called Mobile Harbor. In the implementation, the Mobile Harbor, a functional harbor system that consists of a vessel with container crane approaches to a container ship anchored in the open sea and establishes a secure mooring between the two vessels to carry out loading and unloading of containers. For this moving harbor system to be able to operate successfully, a reliable and safe strategy to moor and maintain constant distance between the two vessels in winds and waves is required. The design process of automatic ship-to-ship mooring system to satisfy the requirements of establishing and maintaining secure mooring has been managed using axiomatic design principles. Properly defining and disseminating Functional Requirements, clarifying interface requirements between its subsystems, and identifying potential conflict, i.e. functional coupling, at the earliest stage of design as much as possible are all part of what need to be managed in a system design project. In this paper, we discuss the automatic docking system design project under the umbrella of KAIST mobile harbor project to illustrate how the Axiomatic Design process can facilitate design projects for a large and complex engineering system. The solidified design is presented as a result.
