  • Purpose The purpose of this study focused on adopting production systems in cognitive psychology to improve the extraction process of persuasive design characteristics for healthcare-related mobile applications. Design/Methodology/Approach A research approach with four stages was developed. We developed and updated the evaluation guideline for persuasive design characteristics (PDC). We tried to summarize and analyze each of 28 PDC and prepared related production rules. Verification process for both guideline approach and production system approach were performed. Top one hundred apps from both medical category and health and Fitness category were selected and evaluated by two approaches. By comparing the results of the two approaches, we tried to explain the improvement and reliability of introducing the production system in the PDC extraction process. Findings Based on the updated guideline for healthcare-related mobile applications, a production system in cognitive psychology was developed. By comparing the PDC extraction results by two approaches, production system showed a better improvement for evaluation precision and efficiency for decision-making process. The findings of this study can be used for researchers and app developers to apply production system to analyze, evaluate, and develop better healthcare-related apps with persuasion.

  • As the competition among commercial shipyards gets more intense and the number of ships to be designed is increasing significantly, the state is that engineering work volume has increased proportionately. Under these conditions, various attempts have been tried to improve performance in design activities and it has come to a vital issue as to how the design process should be managed and conducted in more efficient manner. To achieve this goal, an engineering process management system has been developed, named 'DSME Engineering Wizard System'. It aims to accelerate process performance by managing execution, promoting collaboration and maximizing engineering data reusability based on workflow concept. For the application of this system, Marketing Design which is one of the major processes for commercial ship design was analyzed and established into a unique workflow template consisting of activities, getting design experiences organized into a best practice in which engineering tasks are performed in the way proven most efficient.

  • Chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) process is a semiconductor process that planarizes a wafer surface using mechanical friction between a polishing pad and a substrate surface during a specific chemical reaction. During the CMP process, polishing pad conditioning is applied to prevent the rapid degradation of the polishing quality caused by polishing pad glazing through repeated material removal processes. However, during the conditioning process, uneven wear on the polishing pad is inevitable because the disk on which diamond particles are electrodeposited is used. Therefore, the abrasion of the polishing pad should be considered not only for the variables during the conditioning process but also when designing the CMP conditioning system. In this study, three design variables of the conditioning system were analyzed, and the effect on the pad wear profile during conditioning was investigated. The three design variables considered in this study were the length of the conditioner arm, diameter of the conditioner disk, and distance between centers. The Taguchi method was used for the experimental design. The effect of the three design variables on pad wear and uniformity was assessed, and new variables used in conditioning system design were proposed.

  • This paper describes some research works of computer-aided design of blanking and piercing progressive die for stator and rotor parts. An approach to the system is based on knowledge based rules. The deveolped system is composed of six modules such as main program, input and shape treatment, production feasibility check, strip layout, die layout and drawing edit module. Using this system, design parameters ( geometric shapes, die and punch dimensions and dimensions of tool elements) are determined and output is gen- erated in graphic from. Knowledges for tool design are extracted from the plasticity theories, handbooks, relevant references and empirical know-hows of experts in blkanking companies. The developed system provides powerful capabilities for process planning and die design of stator and rotor parts.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop a collaborative architectural design system. Design collaboration requires an extensive use of communication methods as well as the participation of various experts from different domains. Such facts address several issues when the Internet and digital media are able to create a completely new work environment. The building design process was studied, and possible modes of design collaboration were defined. A prototype system is being developed in accordance with the defined collaboration model. The system integrates a set of communication tools and web-based design media. Such media include a synchronous multi-user web CAD tool, a schematic 3D design tool, and a electronic whiteboard. A project database was designed in order to coordinate the project-wide communication which elaborates technologies such as web-based data access. In order to find out the effectiveness of the system, a usability test was performed both in quantitative and qualitative manner. The research will contribute to the development of world-wide design and construction collaboration through the Internet, which is becoming a mainstream building process model.

  • In order to improve the productivity of cold forging at low production cost, an integrated system's approach is necessary in handling the material preparation and the optimum process design, considering the forming machines, tooling, and operation including quality control. As the first step toward this approach, an expert system for multi-stage cold forging process design for fasteners with various head geometries is developed using Prolog language on IBM 486 PC. For effective representation of the complex part geometries, the system uses the multiple element input, and the forward inference scheme in determination of the initial billet size and intermediate forging steps. In order to determine intermediate steps, the basic empirical rules for extrusion, heading, and trimming were applied. The required forming loads and global strain distributions at each forging step were calculated and displayed on the PC monitor. The designed process sequence drawing can be obtained by AutoCAD. The developed system will be useful in reducing trial and error of design engineers in determining the diameter and height of the initial cylindrical billet from the final product geometry and the intermediate necessary sequences.

  • This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which designer can determine operation sequences even if they have a little experience in process planning and die design for axisymmetric products. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. The system can provide a flexible process based on either the reduction in the number of forming sequences by combining the possible two processes in sequence, or the reduction of deviation of the distribution on the level of the required forming loads by controlling the forming ratios. Especially in die design module optimal design technique and horizontal split of die insert were investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of multi-former die set. Results obtained, using the modules, enable the design and manufacture of a die set for a multi-former to be more efficiently performed.
