  • Cloud storage system uses a distributed file system for storing and managing data. Traditional distributed file system makes a triplication of data in order to restore data loss in disk failure. However, enforcing data replication method increases storage utilization and causes extra I/O operations during replication process. In this paper, we propose a data replication method using erasure codes in cloud storage system to improve storage space efficiency and I/O performance. In particular, according to data access frequency, the proposed method can reduce the number of data replications but using erasure codes can keep the same data recovery performance. Experimental results show that proposed method improves performance in storage efficiency 40%, read throughput 11%, write throughput 10% better than HDFS does.

  • We consider the use of error control coding in direct sequence-code-division multiple access (OS-COMA) systems that employ multiuser detection (MUO) and space diversity. The relative performance gain between Reed-Solomon (RS) code and convolutional code (CC) is well known in [1] for the single user, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In this case, RS codes outperform CC's at high signal-to-noise ratios. We find that this is not the case for the multiuser interference channel mentioned above. For useful error rates, we find that soft-decision CC's to be uniformly better than RS codes when used with DS-COMA modulation in multiuser space-time channels. In our development, we use the Gaussian approximation on the interference to determine performance error bounds for systems with low number of users. Then, we check their accuracy in error rate estimation via system's simulation. These performance bounds will in turn allow us to consider a large number of users where we can estimate the gain in user-capacity due to channel coding. Lastly, the use of turbo codes is considered where it is shown that they offer a coding gain of 2.5 dB relative to soft-decision CC.

  • This paper presents new CRC-p codes for VHF band maritime wireless communication system based on performance analysis of various CRC codes. For this purpose, we firstly describe the method of determination of undetected error probability and minimum Hamming distance according to variation of CRC codeword length. By using the fact that the dual code of cyclic Hamming code and primitive BCH code become maximum length codes, we present an algorithm for computation of undetected error probability and minimum Hamming distance where the concept of simple hardware that is consisted of linear feedback shift register is utilized to compute the weight distribution of CRC codes. We also present construction of transmit data frame of VHF band maritime wireless communication system and specification of major communication parameters. Finally, new optimal CRC-p codes are presented based on the simulation results of undetected error probability and minimum Hamming distance using the various generator polynomials of CRC codes, and their performances are evaluated with simulation results of bit error rate based on the Rician maritime channel model and ${\pi}$/4-DQPSK modulator.

  • WLAN technologies enable high-speed data transmission in a small space with relatively low cost and power. There are two main standardizations regarding WLAN; namely, IEEE802.11a and ETSI BRAN. Two standards use a radio frequency of 5 ㎓ band and employs OFDM as a transmission mode. OFDM is known to provide high-frequency efficiency as well as high-speed data transmission. In this paper, We use SPW simulation tool and implement the HIPERLAN/2 system. Based on the HIPERLAN/2 system in the SPW platform, the system performance is analyzed and compared with turbo codes in place of a convolutional coder of the HIPERLAN/2 WLAN system. The simulation results show that the performance with the turbo codes (rate 1/3 and 1/4) at a data rate of 12 Mbps shows 3 ㏈ gain over the system with the convolutional codes. At a data rate of 36 Mbps, the performance with the turbo codes is further improved by approximately 4 ㏈.

  • Verification of the safety of untrusted codes becomes an important issue in the mobile computing environment and the safety-critical software systems. Recently, it is very common to run the codes attached to the electronic mails or downloaded from the web browsers. We propose the verification method of the machine code property. The code producer delivers the machine code and its property, then the code consumer checks whether the delivered code satisfies the delivered property. The safety of source codes is verified by the well-defined compiler systems but the verification mechanism for machine codes is not well defined yet. We design an intermediate language etySECK and propose the verification method of the property of etySECK programs. And then we prove the soundness of our system which is the type system with effect extension.

  • Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has operated an integral effect test facility, the Advanced Thermal-Hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation (ATLAS), with reference to the APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400) for tests for transient and design basis accidents simulation. A test for a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) at the top of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) had been conducted at ATLAS to address the impact of the loss of safety injections (LSI) and to evaluate accident management (AM) actions during the postulated accident. The experimental data has been utilized to validate system analysis codes within a framework of the domestic standard problem program organized by KAERI in collaboration with Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety. In this study, the test has been analyzed by using thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes, MARS-KS 1.5 and TRACE 5.0 Patch 6, and a comparative analysis with experimental and calculation results has been performed. The main objective of this study is the investigation of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena during a small break LOCA at the RPV upper head with the LSI as well as the predictability of the system analysis codes after the AM actions during the test. The results from both codes reveal that overall physical behaviors during the accident are predicted by the codes, appropriately, including the excursion of the peak cladding temperature because of the LSI. It is also confirmed that the core integrity is maintained with the proposed AM action. Considering the break location, a sensitivity analysis for the nodalization of the upper head has been conducted. The sensitivity analysis indicates that the nodalization gave a significant impact on the analysis result. The result emphasizes the importance of the nodalization which should be performed with a consideration of the physical phenomena occurs during the transient.

  • In order to convert Korean folk paintings called Minhwa, a part of traditional Korean heritage, into DBs, it is necessary to design a classification system suitable for the characteristics of folk paintings. A classification system and the generating of unique codes are required to classify and save them. To realize this, a basic classification system was created by listing objects depicted in folk paintings, and keywords were extracted by reclassifying them for each object. In order to assign a unique code to each piece, we organize the English names of each Minhwa since the English names of the folk painting contain the names of objects. The code name is extracted by applying the order of nouns and consonant priority rules in English names and attaching five Arabic numerals. These codes are later assigned to each image file stored in the database and are input together with the keyword. The Minhwa DB constructed in this way enables storage and search centered on objects and keywords and the intuitive inferring of the type of object from the code name.

  • The act was designed to identify the introductory cases of the use of quick response (QR) codes in records management by public institutions and propose measures to enhance users' satisfaction with their work. This study looked at the definition of the QR codes and the user services that can be provided by the records depository and reviewed the introduction cases using the codes. The reason QR codes are used by records depositors is that public institutions currently have a single-person system that specializes in records management. With the number of employees and the number of records becoming more extensive, explaining the contents of all tasks accurately as well as other professional contents to employees who lack understanding of the records management life cycle is becoming more difficult. The introductory cases were divided into information on how to register nonelectronic records, information on location and history of important records and administrative museum, and education on standard records management. The research was conducted by dividing the research team's "Records Management Guide" (QR code status) into experimental groups and control groups for officials of the Busan Metropolitan Government. There were significant differences in the level of satisfaction with records management guidance depending on whether or not QR codes were used. When the first and second surveys were compared in December 2017 and March 2018, the results of the first survey averaged 2.94, but the second survey showed high results at 3.75 and was statistically significant. This can be said to be more satisfactory by introducing QR codes than guidance provided by existing type. Although this research examines introductory cases of records management by public institutions using QR codes and user satisfaction, future tasks are to be applied to Records Management System and document production systems so that completion can be improved.

  • At the ubiquitous age, applications of Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) technology using LEDs are in progress. However, visible light communication using LED have weakness, which deteriorates performance of communication. To reduce information losses, which is caused by optical noise, such as incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, sunbeam etc., proposed channel coding scheme, double binary turbo codes. In this paper, encoding scheme of the proposed system is described and simulation results are analyzed. We had expected improved performance by using double binary turbo codes. Finally, performances of the proposed system came up to our expectations.

  • In this paper, we propose and analyze a new scheme which uses the same scramble codes to each group after symbol grouping to reduce the PAPR (peak-to-avenge power ratio) problem in OFDM system. The conventional SLM scheme randomizes OFDM symbols entered into IFFT block by several scramble codes and then transmits the lowest one among PAPRs. Therefore, the SLM scheme can reduce the additional information as many as the number of grouped OFDM symbols by using same scramble codes after M grouping of sub-carriers. It can also improve PAPR performance more than conventional SLM scheme when we use scramble codes as same as those numbers of SLM scheme.
