An Experimental Study on Variations of Exhaust Gas Temperature and Concentration with Synthetic Gas Combustion in Exhaust Manifold (배기관에서의 합성가스 연소에 따른 배기가스 온도 및 농도 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A synthetic gas reformed from hydrocarbon-based fuels consists of $H_2$, CO and $N_2$. Hydrogen contained in the synthetic gas is a very useful species in chemical processes, due to its wide flammability range and fast burning speed. The ESGI (Exhaust Synthetic Gas Injection) technology is developed to shorten the light-off time of three way catalysts through combustion of the synthetic gas in the exhaust manifold during the cold start period of SI engines. Before the ESGI technology is applied to the test engine, the authors set a test rig that consists of gas temperature and composition controllers, an exhaust pulse generator and an exhaust manifold with a visualization window, in order to optimize the point and conditions of injection of the synthetic gas. Through measuring burned gas temperatures and taking photographs of synthetic gas combustion at the outlet of the exhaust manifold, the authors tried to find the optimal injection point and conditions. Analysis of burned gas composition has been performed for various $O_2$ concentrations. As a result, when the synthetic gas is injected at the port outlet of the cylinder No. 4 and $O_2$ concentration exceeds 4%, combustion of the synthetic gas is strong and effective in the exhaust manifold.

  • Numerical study is conducted to predict effects of radiative heat loss and fuel composition in synthetic gas diffusion flame diluted with $CO_2$. The existing reaction models in synthetic gas flames diluted with $CO_2$ are evaluated. Numerical simulations with and without gas radiation, based on an optical thin model, are also performed to concrete impacts on effects of radiative heat loss in flame characteristics. Importantly contributing reaction steps to heat release rate are compared for synthetic gas flames with and without $CO_2$ dilution. It is also addressed that the composition of synthetic gas mixtures and their radiative heat losses through the addition of $CO_2$ modify the reaction pathways of oxidation diluted with $CO_2$.

  • Combustion characteristics of synthetic gas from flame pyrolysis gasification of polymetric wastes are reported and the applicability of synthetic gas from flame pyrolysis gasification to a gas engine system is presented. Engine power is easily predicted by the volume percentage of the synthetic gas. Measurements have been made to obtain the range of flame existence in the function of volume percentage of CO and $H_2$ gases in the synthetic gas. In order to clarify the emission of the flames, NOx measurements by chemiluminescent analyser are taken in flames with different equivalent ratios. From the results of the engine performance data we also have demonstrated that the output of the gas engine modified from a LPG engine is about 5 ps at normal rating. We conclude that synthetic gas from flame pyrolysis gasification of polymetric wastes is applicable to a gas engine system.

  • Recently, the interest of the study about IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle), one of New & Renewable Energy technologies, bas been increased due to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Low Carbon Green Growth policy, etc. Also, with this interest of IGCC, the study on the gas turbine utilizing the synthetic gas is performing actively. In the study of the gas turbine characteristic, the power performance and the combustion efficiency are mainly discussed and also the concern about the exhaust gas is being taken care of due to the increasing awareness of the environment. With this, we would like to go over the exhaust gas emission characteristic by the synthetic gas inflow in this test. In order to conduct such a test, we constructed a synthetic gas supplying system to supply the synthetic gases ($H_2$: hydrogen, $N_2$: nitrogen, CO: carbon monoxide, $CO_2$: carbon dioxide, and $H_2O$: steam) quantitatively and this combustion test was conducted by controlling the supplied synthetic gases artificially. The concentration of the exhaust gases appeared variously depending on the differences of the inflow nitrogen amount and the steam amount, whether or not the carbon dioxide flow in and so on. The results of the test can be able to be utilized for the IGCC study by understanding the exhaust gas emission characteristic of the coal gas turbine by synthetic gas composition.

  • Synthetic gas is defined as reformed gas from hydrocarbon-based fuel and the major chemical species of the synthetic gas are $H_2$, CO and $N_2$. Among them, hydrogen from synthetic gas is very useful species in chemical process such as combustion. It is a main reason that many studies have been performed to develop an effective reforming device. Furthermore, other technologies have been studied for synthetic gas application, such as the ESGI(Exhaust Synthetic Gas Injection) technology. ESGI injects and burns synthetic gas in the exhaust pipe so that heat from hydrogen combustion helps fast warmup of the close-coupled catalyst and reduction of harmful emissions. However, it is very hard to understand combustion characteristic of hydrogen under low oxygen environment and complicated variation in chemical species in exhaust gas. This study focuses on the characteristics of hydrogen combustion under ESGI operating conditions using a CVC(Constant Volume Chamber). Measurements of pressure variation and flame speed have been performed for various oxygen and hydrogen concentrations. Results have been analyzed to understand ignition and combustion characteristics of hydrogen under lower oxygen conditions. The CVC experiments showed that under lower oxygen concentration, amount of active chemicals in the combustion chamber was a crucial factor to influence hydrogen combustion as well as hydrogen/oxygen ratio. It is also found that increase in volume fraction of oxygen is effective for the fast and stable burning of hydrogen by virtue of increase in flame speed.

  • This paper presents the applicability of low caloric synthetic gas from coal gasification to small sized generator. Measurements on the combustion characteristics of synthetic gas from coal gasification as compared with LPG in constant volume combustion chamber have been conducted. A commercial LPG engine and generator are modified to use the low caloric synthetic gas from coal gasification as the engine fuel. We have demonstrated that the generator is well operated with various loads.

  • Computational analyses are conducted on the combustion characteristics of the coal- and the biomass-derived synthetic gases with low-Btu heating value in gas engine. Using thermochemical analyses on the synthetic gases, combustion pressure, temperature, exhaust gas composition, NO emission and engine power are predicted and the predicted results are compared with small-scale pilot engine test results. In order to investigate the unsteady combustion phenomena in gas engine combustion chamber, CFD analyses are carried out on the coal and the biomass synthetic gases and their computed results are compared to provide the guidelines for the design modification and the tuning of the gas engine burning the synthetic gases as alternative fuels.

  • As the need for clean coal technology has grown, so has the global research and development efforts into integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants. An IGCC plant couples a gas turbine to a gasification block. Various technical and economic problems exist in designing such a system. One such problem is the difficulty in realizing economies of scale because the single-train flow capacity of commercial IGCC synthetic gas turbine plants is limited; the capacity does not exceed a net power rating of 300 MW. To address this problem, this study modeled and simulated a synthetic gas turbine with the goal of evaluating the feasibility of a 500 MW or larger IGCC plant. First, a gas turbine with the best output and efficiency was chosen for use with natural gas. The turbine was modeled using GateCycle (a simulation tool), and the integrity of the model validated by comparing the result to the design value. Next, off-design modeling was carried out for a gas turbine with synthetic gas based on its on-design model, and the result was compared with the study result of the gas turbine manufacturer. The simulation confirmed that it is possible to create a large capacity IGCC plant by undertaking the remodeling of a gas turbine designed to use natural gas into one suitable for synthetic gas.

Anaerobic treatment of red-bean processing wastewater in a sludge bed reactor (슬러지반응기에서 팥가공폐수의 철기성 처리)

  • Anaerobic treatment of wastewater of the red- bean processing industry was carried out and discussed an anaerobic sludge bed reactor( ASBR) as a preliminary study to evaluate applicability of given processes. The dimension of reactor were same as 0.09m- ID$\times $1.5m- height. The type of substrate and the hydraulic retention time( HRT) were considered as experimental variables. The synthetic wastewater with glucose in the laboratory, the wastewater from the red bean processing industry mixed with synthetic wastewater with variation of mixing percent were fed as substrate. The hydraulic retention time was changed from one day to five days. The gas production, the methane content in produced gas, efficiencies of COD removal and 55 removal were evaluated as principal characteristics. With synthetic wastewater as a substrate and at a hydraulic retention time of one day, characteristics of ASBR was the gas production(12$\ell$/day ), the methane content of produced gas(60%), the efficiency of COD removal(92%) and 55 removal(30%). With the real wastewater and at a hydraulic retention time of one day, the gas production and the efficiency of COD removal of the ASBR decreased with the proportion of real wastewater. The gas production and the efficiency of COD removal with real wastewater only was decreased to 70% and 87% of those with synthetic wastewater only, respectively. However, the methane content in produced gas and the efficiency of 55 removal with real wastewater only was increased significantly by 1.25 times and two times of those with synthetic wastewater only, respectively. During a $SF_6$ gas circuit breaker development, Simplified synthetic testing facility is used.
