A novel sulfonate flame retardant, 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(phenyl-4-sodium sulfonate)adamantane (FR-A), was successfully synthesized from 1-bromoadamantane in sequential four-step reactions involving Fiedel-Crafts phenylation, sulphonation, hydrolysis, and neutralization. The success of synthesis was confirmed by FTIR spectra, $^1H$ NMR spectra, elemental analyses and mass spectra. The effect of FR-A on the flame retardacy of polycarbonate (PC) has been studied. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that this novel sulfonate flame retardant had effective flame retardancy on polycarbonate (PC). With a small amount (0.08 wt%) of FR-A, the flame retardancy of PC was improved obviously, which got to UL 94 V-0 rating. TGA and DTA curves demonstrated that the additive raised the degradation rate of PC by promoting the quick formation of an insulating carbon layer on the surface, and confirmed that the flame retardant mechanism of PC/FR-A system was similar to potassium diphenylsulfone sulfonate (KSS).
$LaCoO_3$ powders synthesized by Pechini process were pulverized by planetary ball-milling to decrease particle size and characterized as a catalyst in alkaline solution for oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR & OER). The changes of physical properties, such as particle size distribution, surface area and electric conductivity, were analyzed as a function of ball-milling time. Also, the variations of the crystal structure and surface morphology of ball-milled powders were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The electrochemically catalytic activities of the intrinsic $LaCoO_3$ powders decreased with increasing ball-milling time, but their electrochemical performance as an electrode improved by the increase of the surface area of the powder.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with Pd and $TiO_2$ composite catalysts were synthesized by the sol-gel method followed by solvothermal treatment at low temperature. The chemical composition and surface structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Photocatalytic recycle degradation experiments were carried out under both UV and visible light irradiation in the presence of MWCNT/$TiO_2$ and Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites. As expected, the nanosized Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalysts had enhanced activity over the non Pd treated MWCNT/$TiO_2$ material in the degradation of a rhodamine B (Rh.B) solution. An increase in photocatalytic activity was observed and attributed to an increase in the photo-absorption effect by MWCNTs and the cooperative effect of Pd and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. According to the recycled results, the as-prepared Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ sample had a good effect on it.
The fabrication of Fe alloy-40 wt.%TiC composite materials using spark plasma sintering process after ball-milling was studied. Raw powders to fabricate Fe alloy-TiC composite were Fe alloy, $TiH_{2}$ and activated carbon. Fe alloy powder was Distaloy AE (4%Ni-1%Cu-0.5%Mo-0.01%C-bal.%Fe) made by Hoeganes company with better toughness and lower melting point. These powders were ball-milled in horizontal attrition ball mill at a ball-to-powder weight ratio of 30 : 1. After that, these mixture powders were sintered by using spark plasma sintering apparatus for 5 min at $1200-1275^{\circ}C$ in vacuum atmosphere under $10^{-3}$ torr. DistaloyAE-40 wt.%TiC composite was directly synthesized by dehydrogenation and carburization reaction during sintering process. The phase transformation of as-milled powders and sintered materials was confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The density and harness materials was measured in order to confirm the densification behavior. In case of DistaloyAE-40 wt.%TiC composite retained for 5 min at $1275^{\circ}C$, it has the relative density of about 96% through the influence of rapid densification and fine TiC particle reinforced Fe-based composites materials.
In this study, a PbS quantum dots (QDs)-based H2 gas sensor with a Pd electrode was proposed. QDs have a size of several nanometers, and they can exhibit a high surface area when forming a thin film. In particular, the NH2 present in the ligand of PbS QDs and H2 gas are combined to form NH3+, subsequently the electrical characteristics of the QDs change. In addition to the resistance change owing to the reaction between Pd and H2 gas, the resistance change owing to the reaction between the NH2 of PbS QDs and H2 gas increases the current signal at the sensor output, which can produce a high output signal for the same concentration of H2 gas. Using the XRD and absorbance properties, the synthesis and particle size of the synthesized PbS QDs were analyzed. Using PbS QDs, the sensitivity was significantly improved by 44%. In addition, the proposed H2 gas sensor has high selectivity because it has low reactivity with heterogeneous gases such as C2H2, CO2, and CH4.
This paper relates to the synthesis of a source powder for SiC crystal growth. ${\beta}-SiC$ powders are synthesized at high temperatures (>$1400^{\circ}C$) by a reaction between silicon powder and carbon powder. The reaction is carried out in a graphite crucible operating in a vacuum ambient (or Ar gas) over a period of time sufficient to cause the Si+C mixture to react and form poly-crystalline SiC powder. End-product characterizations are pursued with X-ray diffraction analysis, SEM/EDS, particle size analyzer and ICP-OES. The purity of the end-product was analyzed with the Korean Standard KS L 1612.

Gallium Nitride(GaN) attracts great attention due to their wide band gap energy (3.4eV), high thermal stability to the solid state lighting devices like LED, Laser diode, UV photo detector, spintronic devices, solar cells, sensors etc. Recently, researchers are interested in synthesis of polycrystalline and amorphous GaN which has also attracted towards optoelectronic device applications significantly. One of the alternatives to deposit GaN at low temperature is to use Single Source Molecular Percursor (SSP) which provides preformed Ga-N bonding. Moreover, our group succeeds in hybridization of SSP synthesized GaN with Single wall carbon nanotube which could be applicable in field emitting devices, hybrid LEDs and sensors. In this work, the GaN thin films were deposited on c-axis oriented sapphire substrate by MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) using novel single source precursor of dimethyl gallium azido-tert-butylamine($Me_2Ga(N_3)NH_2C(CH_3)_3$) with additional source of ammonia. The surface morphology, structural and optical properties of GaN thin films were analyzed for the deposition in the temperature range of $600^{\circ}C$ to $750^{\circ}C$. Electrical properties of deposited thin films were carried out by four point probe technique and home made Hall effect measurement. The effect of ammonia on the crystallinity, microstructure and optical properties of as-deposited thin films are discussed briefly. The crystalline quality of GaN thin film was improved with substrate temperature as indicated by XRD rocking curve measurement. Photoluminescence measurement shows broad emission around 350nm-650nm which could be related to impurities or defects.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is one of the most important rechargeable battery and portable energy storage for the electric digital devices. In particular, study about the higher energy capacity and longer cycle life is intensively studied because of applications in mobile electronics and electric vehicles. Generally, the LIB's capacity can be improved by replacing anode materials with high capacitance. The graphite, common anode materials, has a good cyclability but shows limitations of capacity (~374 mAh/g). On the contrary, silicon (Si) and germanium(Ge), which is same group elements, are promising candidate for high-performance LIB electrodes because it has a higher theoretical specific capacity. (Si:4200 mAh/g, Ge:1600 mAh/g) However, it is well known that Si volume change by 400% upon full lithiation (lithium insertion into Si), which result in a mechanical pulverization and poor capacity retention during cycling. Therefore, variety of nanostructure group IV elements, including nanoparticles, nanowires, and hollow nanospheres, can be promising solution about the critical issues associated with the large volume change. However, the fundamental research about correlation between the composition and structure for LIB anode is not studied yet. Herein, we successfully synthesized various structure of nanowire such as Si-Ge, Ge-Carbon and Si-graphene core-shell types and analyzed the properties of LIB. Nanowires (NWs) were grown on stainless steel substrates using Au catalyst via VLS (Vapor Liquid Solid) mechanism. And, core-shell NWs were grown by VS (Vapor-Solid) process on the surface of NWs. In order to characterize it, we used FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. We measured battery property of various nanostructures for checking the capacity and cyclability by cell-tester.

In relation to the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett thin film, four kinds of N-alkylpyridiniurn bromide were synthesized. The values of surface tensions of these materials, measured with a Traube stalagmometer, gave the relationship between the critical micells hydrophobic radical and between CMC and temperature. Values of thermodynamic properties(${\Delta}H^0_m,\;{\Delta}S^0_m,\;{\Delta}G^0_m,$) for the formatoin of micelle were also obtained. Experiments gave the following results; at the temperature range between 40 and 60$^{\circ}C, CMC of Hexadecyl-, Octadecyl-, Eicosyl-, and Docosyl-Pyridinium Bromide were $7.64{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}9.13{\times}10^{-4},\;3.85{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}4.60{\times}10^{-4},\;2.00{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.39{\times}10^{-4},\;and\;1.07{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.28{\times}10^{-4}$ mol/l, respectively. Surface tension, ${\Gamma}_{CMC}$, of those were 33.49${\sim}$36.00, 34.78${\sim}$37.61, 35.49${\sim}$37.61 and 38.76${\sim}$55.80 dyne/cm, respectively, The relationship between CMC and the mumber of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic radical, N was expressed as follows : Log(CMC)=A-BN where A and B are constants. At the temperature range between 40 and 60$^{\circ}C$, the change of Gibbs evergy (${\Delta}G_m$) for one methylene group ($-CH_2-$) were -0.65RT, respectively, The minus values of enthalpy change (${\Delta}H_m$) suggest that the formation of micelle is exothermic. Additionally, the overall increase in the entropy change (${\Delta}S_m$) with respect to the temperature increase suggests that the formation of micelle is attained by a exothermic enthalpy directed process.

Pentadentate Schiff base molybdenum(Ⅴ) complexes such as [Mo(Ⅴ)O(Sal-DET)(NCS)] and [Mo(Ⅴ)O(Sal-DPT)(NCS)] were synthesized by Sabat method. The structure of these complexes were identified by elemental analysis, spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis(T.G.A.). It was found that the mole ratio of Schiff base ligand to the complexes was found to be 1 : 1. The redox processes of the complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetric and differential pulse polarographic technique in nonaqueous solvent containing 0. 1 M tetraethyl ammonium perchlorate(TEAP) as supporting electrolyte at glassy carbon electrode. It was found that diffusion controlled reduction processes of four steps with one electron were 2Mo(Ⅴ)$\rightleftarrow^{e-}$ Mo(Ⅴ)Mo(Ⅳ) $\longrightarrow^{e-}$ 2Mo(Ⅳ), Mo(Ⅳ) $\longrightarrow^{e-}$ Mo(Ⅲ) $\longrightarrow^{e-}$ Mo(Ⅱ)
