  • A novel image completion method is proposed that uses the advantage of planar structural information to fill corrupted portions of an image. First, in estimating parameters of the projection plane, the image is divided into several planes, and their planar structural information is analyzed. Second, in calculating the a priori probability of patch and patch offset regularity, this information is converted into a constraint condition to guide the process of filling the hole. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is fast and effective, and ensures the structure continuity of the damaged region and smoothness of the texture.

  • The LRFD Specification defines two sets of limiting width-to-thickness ratios. On the basis of these limiting values, steel sections we subdivided into three categories: compact, noncompact, and slender sections. A compact section is capable of developing a fully plastic stress distribution (plastic moment), and can sustain rotations approximately three times beyond the yield before the possibility of local buckling arises. Noncompact sections can develop the yield stress before local buckling occurs. They may not, however, resist local buckling at the strain levels required to develop the fully plastic stress distribution. In this paper, 1-Type girders of a 2 span continuous steel bridge are divided into compact and non-compact sections and analyzed. In the design process, an optimization skill was adopted and ADS, a Fortran program for Automated Design Synthesis, was used.

The goal of sheet forming simulation is to embedded in the design engineering system which is consisted by the analysis and synthesis modules. This design simulation system predicts the slackness of sheet and estimate the formability, and search the optimum material/forming/structure conditions. This OVER-ALL OPTIMUM DESIGN can be classified as follow; 1. ANALYZING PROCEDURE: Numerical simulation based on nonlinear theories -geometry, material and friction nonlinearities- 2. OPTIMIZATION PROCEDURE: Optimum design based on mathematical programing and AI technologies, those are implemented in CAD/CAM/CAE System - Concurrent Engineering System-. • The aircraft engine is usually supported by rolling element bearings and has a small damping rate, which is vol y sensitive to external force. The high-performance requirement of the rotors leads to complex assembly designs and are more flexible. Squeeze film dampers (SFDs) are introduced to provide damping while crossing the critical speeds and stability to the rotor s :stem. Hence, the focus of the present investigation is on the decision of an optimal size of the flexible rotor system supported by the squeeze film dampers to minimize the maximum transmitted load and unbalance response over a range operating speeds. The enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA), which was developed by authors, is used in the optimization process. This algorithm is based on the synthesis of a modified genetic algorithm and simplex method. The results show significant benefits in using EGA when compared with nonlinear programming (NLP).

  • In this study, the human gait trajectories during normal walking were synthesized using the inverse kinematics and optimization techniques. The synthesis based on a lower extremity model consisting of a torso and two legs. Each leg has three segments: thigh, shank, foot, and is assumed to move with six degrees-of-freedom. In order to synthesize trajectiories of this redundant system, the sum of angular displacements of articulating joints was selected as an objective function to be minimized. The proposed algorithm in this study is very useful for the analysis of human gait. For the gait analysis, the trajectories of four points in each leg should be measured. However, by using the algorithm, measuring the trajectories of two points is sufficient, and thus the experimental set-up can be simplified. The predicted joint trajectories showed a good agreement with those obtained from the experiment. The statistical analysis and graphic simula- tions are also presented.

  • QFT(Quantitative Feedback Theory) is a very practical design technique that emphasizes the use of feedback for achieving the desired system performance tolerances in despite of plant uncertainty and disturbance. The fundamental concept of QFT is a loop shaping procedure that a suitable controller can be found by shaping a nominal loop transfer function. The loop shaping synthesis involves the identification of a structure and the specialization of parameter optimization of a desired system. This paper presents an improved loop shaping approach of QFT with model validation using GA(Genetic Algorithm). The method presented in this paper removes the problems of iterative operation, transformation error, and model validation in the conventional methods without consideration of frequency domain.

  • Switched-resonator converters are a new family of soft switching DC-DC converters where the energy is transferred via a resonator. This paper introduces some isolated topologies of this family. The achieved advantages include, load independent soft-switching, self short-circuit protection, and optimization capability due to topology variety. Compared to conventional series-resonant converters, outstanding advantages such as a smaller fewer number of switches and diodes, a smaller transformer, and lower current stresses are achieved. A general synthesis scheme, functional topologies, and essential relations are included. Experimental results from a laboratory prototype confirm the presented theoretical analysis.

  • New PM route via bulk mechanical alloying is developed to fabricate the solid solution semi-conductive materials with $Mg_2Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ and $Mg_2Si_{1-y}Sn_y$ for 0 < x, y < 1 and to investigate their thermoelectric materials. Since $Mg_2Si$ is n-type and both $Mg_2Ge$ and $Mg_2Sn$ are p-type, pn-transition takes place at the specified range of germanium content, x, and tin content, y. Through optimization of chemical composition, solid-solution type thermoelectric semi-conductive materials are designed both for n-and p-type materials.

  • High quality MCM-41 is prepared from a gel of molar composition SiO2:0.20 CTACl:0.18 TMAOH:25 H2O aged at 20 ℃ for 24 hours before crystallization lasting for 48 hours. The (110) and (200) peaks of XRD pattern of high quality MCM-41 are unusually well resolved and the FWHM (full-width-at-half-maximum) of the (100) peak is 0.13° for as-prepared MCM-41 and 0.21° for calcined one, which indicate well-developed crystals. The properties of the crystal depend on the source and concentration of the reactants and the gel aging time. There is no induction period in the course of the synthesis, which is conveniently monitored by pH measurement. Gel aging, during which a spatial distribution of silicate polyanions and micellar cations is established, is essential for preparing high quality MCM-41. Surfactants with the same cationic organic group but different counteranions change the crystallization behavior. Highly basic gel (pH=12.6) favours the lamellar product; the quality of MCM-41 is lower as insufficient TMAOH is available to dissolve the silica.
