  • In order to understand the mechanism of the synthesis of particles using a plasma torch, it is necessary to understand the reaction mechanisms using a computer simulation. In this study, we have developed a simulation method to combine the Lagrangian scheme to follow microparticles and a nodal method to treat nanoparticles categorized with different particle sizes. The Lagrangian scheme includes the Coulomb force which affects the dynamics of larger particles. In contrast, the nodal method is adequate for the nanoparticles because the charge effect is negligible for nanoparticles but the number of nanoparticles is much larger than that of microparticles. This method is helpful to understand the dynamics and growth mechanism of micro- and nano-powder mixture observed in the experiment.

  • $Al_2O_3$-TiC composites were prepared from aluminum, titanium oxide, and carbon fibers by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS). After the SHS reaction, the TiC phase in the sample was found either fibrous or non-fibrous shape. The fraction of the fibrous TiC phase varied with the amount of $Al_2O_3$ diluent addition. The optimum amount of diluent to make fibrous carbide was determined to be 30%. The fibers were hollow inside and made of multiple grains with a composition of titanium carbide. The hollow fiber formation mechanism was suggested and discussed. The synthesized powders were consolidated to dense composites by hot pressing at $1750^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa.

  • Silicon nanoparticles can be synthesized in a standard radio-frequency glow discharge system at low temperature (${\sim}200^{\circ}C$). Plasma synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, initially a side effect of powder formation, has become over the years an exciting field of research which has opened the way to new opportunities in the field of materials deposition and their application to optoelectronic devices. Hydrogenated polymorphous silicon (pm-Si:H) has a peculiar microstructure, namely a small volume fraction of plasma synthesized silicon nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous matrix, which originates from the unique deposition mechanism. Detailed discussion on plasma synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, growth mechanism and photovoltaic application of pm-Si:H will be presented.

  • Motion generation of a four-bar linkage is a type of mechanism synthesis that has a wide range of applications such as a pick-and-place operation in manufacturing. In this research, the use of meta-heuristics for motion generation of a four-bar linkage is demonstrated. Three problems of motion generation were posed as a constrained optimization probably using the weighted sum technique to handle two types of tracking errors. A simple penalty function technique was used to deal with design constraints while three meta-heuristics including differential evolution (DE), self-adaptive differential evolution (JADE) and teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) were employed to solve the problems. Comparative results and the effect of the constraint handling technique are illustrated and discussed.

  • Herein is reported a simple and efficient synthesis of isoflavones starting from various substituted phenacyl bromides and salicylaldehydes in presence of NHC. The mechanism involved domino catalysis type approach with consumption and regeneration of catalyst in two catalytic cycles. This method proved to be very lucrative and gives very good yield. The method described here represents an environmentally benign alternative to classical approach.

  • A qualitative study was made on the mechanism of dextran synthesis by dextransucrase. Enzymatic synthesis of dextran was experimentally studied with initial sucrose concentration from 50g/$\ell$ to 150g/$\ell$. The molecular weight distribution of synthesized dextran was measured by using on-line gel Permeation chromatographic system Sucrose was observed not to work as a primer within the range of concentration tested. At the initial sucrose concentration of 50g/$\ell$, dextran with molecular weight of medium range ($10^4-2{\times}10^6$) was synthesized due to the mass transfer limitation of sucrose. The amount of the dextran of medium range decreased with the initial sucrose concentration. Dextran was likely to be synthesized by radical chain polymerization mechanism since the dextran of medium range was not produced at higher sucrose concentrations.

  • In this study the formation mechanism of AlN synthesized by SHS(Self-propagating high-temperature Syn-thesis) was studied in order to obtain uniform AlN powder size and morphology. Based on the morphology of AlN synthesized and the calculation of the temperature of Al powder as a function AlN layer thickness the formation mechanism of AlN was proposed.

  • A computer aided design of a Stephenson type of Chained six-link mechanism with synthesis equations of the precision positions technigue to generate a required point path is presented. Analysis of this mechanism is carried out by the matrix method. The torque on the input link required to operate the mechanism was obtained by considering inertia and gravity forces of the coupler link.

  • HERBA SAURURI (HS) has been known to use antiinflammatory drug. To investigated the mechanism of HS-induced NO synthesis, I evaluated the ability of protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors such as staurosporine (STSN) or polyymyxin B to block HS-induced effects. HS alone had only a small effect, whereas in combination with $rIFN-{\gamma}$, markedly increased NO synthesis in a dose dependent manner. STSN and polymyxin B decreased NO synthesis, which had been induced by $rIFN-{\gamma}$, plus HS. Furthermore, prolonged incubation of the cells with phorbol ester, which down-regulates PKC activity abolished synergistic cooperative effect of HS with $rIFN-{\gamma}$ on NO synthesis. STSN and Polymyxin B potently inhibited HS-induced $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion by $rIFN-{\gamma}$ plus HS. However, $rIFN-{\gamma}$ plus $TNF-{\alpha}-induced$ NO synthesis was not blocked by STSN or polymyxin B. On the other hand, tyrosine kinase inhibitor, genistein, blocked the NO synthesis and $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion by $rIFN-{\gamma}$ plus HS. In conlusion, the present results strongly suggest that the capacity of HS to increase NO synthesis from $rIFN-{\gamma}-primed$ macrophages is the result of HS-induced $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion via the signal transduction pathway of PKC and tyrosine kinase.

  • Hypertriglyceridemia is one of the metabolic syndrome that is often observed as a result of lipid abnormalities. It is associated with other lipids, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease and liver disease. Korean red ginseng is known to affect obesity, dyslipidemia, liver disease and liver function, but the mechanism of its effect is not clear. This study examined the beneficial effects of hypertriglyceridemia and the mechanism of action of Jinan red ginseng extract (JRG) in hepatoma cells. To measure the levels of triglyceride accumulation, we studied the expression of proteins and mRNAs related to lipidogenesis in hepatoma cells (Huh7 and HepG2). JRG decreases the lipidogenic markers, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), CCAAT-enhancer-binding proteins α (C/EBPα) and C/EBPβ which are major regulators of triglyceride synthesis in hepatoma cells. We also found that JRG reduced sterol regulatory element binding proteins 1c (SREBP-1c), C/EBPα and C/EBPβ by regulating liver X receptor (LXR) and stearoyl CoA desaturase (SCD) expressions. In addition, the first-limited step of synthesis triglyceride (TG), glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) is decreased by JRG. These results suggest that the anti-hypertriglyceride effect of JRG in hepatoma cells could be accompanied with the inhibition of lipidogenic transcription factors by regulating LXR and SCD expression.
