Seasonal occurrences and dynamics on the freshwater algae were examined in the upstream of the Yongsan river system with the Kwangju service water area from 1993 to 1994. Three hundred and three taxi were totally collected and composed of 6 classes, 15 orders, 7 suborders, 31 families, 74 genera, 248 species, 48 varieties and 7 forma. Compositions in each algal class were divided in 136 taxi of Chlorophyceae(44.8% ), 109 taxi of Bacillariophyceae(36.0% ), 30 taxa of Cyanophyceae(10.1% ), 21 taxa of Euglenophyceae(6. 9% ),4 taxi of Chrysophyceae(1.3% ) and 3 taxa of Dinophyceae(1.0% ). The occurrence of taxa was a markedly decrease(-62) between summer and autumn, the critically increase(+43) between spring and summer. And also, it was indicated that the high frequency of taxa in summer, but the high standing biomass In winter in spite of low taxi. In general, it has much algal biomass in station 9 and 10, but low in station 4, 5 and 11, relatively. Through this survey, the major dominant taxa in algal biomass, Microcystis aeruginosa, Melosira varians, Synedra ulna and Navicula cryptocephala, they were all above 2.1×10$^{6}$ce11s/1, 13.2% of totals. There are about 10% of new emigrated taxa by season and they showed a remarkable succession. We may suggested that this system was well sustained for the habitat of freshwater algal community with low dominance and high diversity. Twenty three of nuisance algae including of Microcystis aeruginosa, Peridinium willei and Anabaena flos-aquae were distributed as if had low appearance. Of course, many of them were saprobiontic taxa, extraordinary growttung groups depend on organic loading in water system and also it was not showed severe algal blooming phenomenon.
The freshwater blooms mainly blue-green algal blooms occur frequently in the lower Naktong River in summer, which provoke many socio-economical problems; therefore, the early detection of bloom events are demanding through the quantitative and qualitative analyses of blue green algal species. The in vivo fluorescence properties of cultured strains of Microcystis aeruginosa, M. viridis, M. wesenbergii, M. ichthyoblabe, Anabaena cylindrica, A. flos-aquae, and Synedra sp. were investigated. Wild phytoplankton communities of the lower Naktong River were also monitored at four stations in terms of their standing stocks, biomass and fluorescence properties compared with its absorption spectram. The 77K fluorescence emission spectra of each cultured strains normalized at 620 nm was very specific and enabled to detect of blue green algal biomass qualitatively and quantitatively. The relative chlorophyll a concentration determined by chlorophyll fluorescence analysis method showed significant relationship with chlorophyll a concentration determined by solvent extraction method ($R^2$ = 0.906), and the blue-green algal cell number determined by microscopic observation ($R^2$ = 0.588), which gives insight into applications to early detection of blue green algal bloom.
To understand the relative immigration activities (RIA) of hibernal diatom community in Lake Ilgam (at the station with and without macrophyte) and River Han (at the station with different current and nutrient), a natural and artificial bed substrate was deposited from 15 to 29 January 2008. For the study period, both waters comprised huge biomass of diatom, over 75% of total abundance. Nutrients in water column, ash-free dry matter (AFDM) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in substrates were decreased with increasing of current in rivers, while in lakes the macrophyte largely affected the diatom community and water quality. Algal RIA in rivers was high at stations with high concentration of nutrient, AFDM and Chl-a, and in high nutrients and no macrophytes in lakes, respectively. The species showing a higher RIA was Nitzschia amphibia in rivers and Aulacoseira italica in lakes, while the dominant species were Navicula sp. in rivers and Syndera acus in lakes, suggesting no relationship between water algal biomass and its RIA. These results suggest that the RIA of stream diatom community depends exclusively on the current, while the planktonic diatom in lake was of the macrophyte.

The objective of this research was to review the correlation between microalgae and agricultural water quality. Although microalgae has been considered as an essential factor for control1ing of water ecosystem, little attention has been paid for evaluating of microalgae as an important factor for water quality management. But it can be use to make us know the water pollution state at saprobic system, LTSI (Lake Tropic State Index), DAIpo (Diatom Assemblage Index to Organic Pollution), and AGP (Algal growth potential). In saprobic system, it is used microalgae such as Actinastrum hantzschii var. fluviatile, Asterionella gracillima, Coelastrum microporum, Synedra acus, Dictyosphaerium pulchellum, Micractinium pusillum, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Microcystis aeruginosa, Scenedesmus quadricauda, and Nitzschia palea for assessment water quality. In addition, they have ecologically significant characteristics such as dominant species, cosmopolitan species, redtide causative species etc. Also, microalgae such as Botryococcus braunii, B. sp., Chlorella vulgaris, C. sp., Phormidium sp., Scenedesmus quadricauda, Selenastrum capricornutum, Spirulina maxima, and S. platensis have an effect on improvement of water quality.
The distribution and standing crop of phytoplankton were investigated at 12 stations of Songjiho, Ssangho, Maeho and Hyangho as of four lagoons in the east coast from May to November, 2001. It turned out to be total of 164 taxa, and classified as four phylums, four classes, 14 orders, 20 families, 59 genera, 139 species, 22 varieties, two forms and 1 unidentified species by Engler's classification system. Among 104 taxa, 16 taxa including Oscillatoria chlorina were identified as indicators of water pollution and only Cocconeis placentula was the indicator of the clean water. Standing crops of all stations investigated appeared to be relatively high values. Based on the present study upon the distribution and standing crop of phytoplankton, it is regarded as the state of the eutrophication in Songjiho, Ssangho, Maeho and Hyangho as of four lagoons in the east coast.
This research was to examine the physiochemical factors and the attached diatoms of ecological wetland in Paju from August 2010 to May 2011. As a result of physicohemical water quality assessment, the water temperature did not fluctuate much due to ample riparian vegetation and aquatic plants growing at the site. Due to the effect of Han River Estuary, site 4, 5 and 6 had high electricity conductivity. The BOD concentration was high at site 2, 3, and 4 caused by decrease in water quantity and inflow of polluted water. At all sites, T-N and T-P concentrations ranged from eutrophic to hypertrophic status. At the downstream, the T-N and T-P concentrations decreased by inhabiting aquatic plant. Total of 98 taxa of attached diatoms were found. As for dominant taxa, Achnanthes convergens, A. minutissima, Gomphonema gracile, G. parvulum, Melosira varians, Navicula seminulum, N. minima, N. pseudolanceolata, Nitzschia amphibia, N. palea, Surirella minuta and Synedra ulna var. fragilariodes appeared. The result of biological assessment of water quality rated the sites B(suboptimal)~D(poor) during seasons of low water temperature, Fall and Winter, with DAIpo ranging 24.1~68.2 and TDI of 48.4~85.6. During Spring and Summer, all sites were rated D(poor) with DAIpo lower than or equal to 40, and TDI above or equal to 70. The biological assessment of water quality at the research site showed inferior TDI result compared to that of DAIpo.
The community of periphyton was studied at high altitude streams of the Han-river System, including Buk-stream and Hangae-stream from October to November 2010. The study had special emphasis on the distribution of the cryophilic and mountain periphyton. In this research, 117 taxa of periphyton appeared and 80 taxa of diatom were included within these periphytons. Saproxenous taxa, such as Achnanthes convergens and Hannaea arcus var. subarcus were appeared in most sites, 7 sites were dominant by filamentous taxa in green and blue green algae. The DAIpo value was from 48.8 to 92.5 for the water system of this research. Most sites showed a good water quality, receiving a B class or above except the Woljeong-stream and the Daeki-stream. Cryophilic and mountain periphyton appeared 9 taxa which composed by diatoms Cymbella affinis, Cymbella tumida, Diatoma mesodon, Diatoma vulgare, Eunotia pectinalis, Hannaea arcus, Hannaea arcus var. subarcus and Synedra inaequalis and green algae Ulothrix zonata. Among these taxa, Hannaea arcus var. subarcus, found in 29 out of 33 sites, had the highest frequency of apperance. The relative frequency of Hannaea arcus var. subarcus was positively correlated with altitude($r^2$=0.539) and negatively correlated with water temperature($r^2$=0.338). As a result, Hannaea arcus var. subarcus showed the characteristics of cryophilic and mountain periphyton in the research site.
Spatio-temporal variations of phytoplankton abundance and nutrient concentrations were investigated in the Namdaechon estuary, Yangyang, from April to December, 2003. A total of 51 phytoplankton species were identified with 32 diatom species in the study area. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from 14 cells/mL to 3,798 cells/mL. Small sized benthic and pennate-type diatoms like Cymbella spp., Fragilaria spp., Navicula spp., Synedra spp. were dominant at throughout the whole study area. Various planktonic species like Chlamydomonas sp., Peridinium spp., Euglena spp., Cryptomonas spp. etc. were abundant especially at the estuary of the Namdaechon, from May to August. Phytoplankton bloom (>3,000 \;cells/mL) occurred from the late May to mid June. After September when the sandbank of estuary was broken by the typhoon 'Maemi', planktonic species disappeared. These planktonic species were followed by oceanic diatoms, Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros spp.. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and silicate were relatively high at the upstream in summer. In May, before phytoplankton bloom, high concentrations of phosphate $(>3.5\;{\mu}mol/L)$ were observed at all the study area. These results suggested that spatio-temporal variation of phytoplankton in the Namdaechon estuary was related to formation of sandbank at the mouth of the estuary, fluid speed affected by sandbank and nutrients supplied in spring. High correlation $(r^2=0.928)$ between chlorophyll a and biological oxygen demand (BOD) implies that BOD was related to phytoplankton abundance in the Namdaechon estuary.
This study was carried out to investigate distribution of epilithic algal and chemical contents of irrigation water influencing in the Seomjin River from March to October in 1996 and 1997. In the water quality of the Seomjin River, the monthly average contents of $NH^+\;_4-N,\;SO_4\;^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ showed the lowest peak in July and August while that of $NO_3-N$ showed the highest peak in June. The water quality of the Seomjin River was deteriorated by inflow of Yo-cheon and Sosi-cheon in the middle stream. The concentration of anions and cations of the Seomjin River was $Cl^->SO_4\;^{2-}>NO_3\;^->PO_4\;^{3-}\;and\;Ca^{2+}>Na^+>Mg^{2+}>K^+>NH_4\;^+$, respectively. The epilithic algal community identified 339 taxa consisting of 7 forma, 42 varieties and 290 species in 6 classes. In species composition, green algae and diatoms were heavily dominated which were evaluated 50.4% and 31.3% of total classification, respectively. In seasonal distribution, 219 species presented in summer but, 147 species were in winter. In this study, dominant species were Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta and Cosmarium furcatospermum in spering. Cyclotella meneghinasa and Synedra ulna, Scenedesmus ecornis in summer. Melosira varians, Achnathes minutissima in autumn and Gomphonema parvulum in winter were dominated. Finally, the dominant indices in this study have ranged 0.10-0.43.
