  • Currently, clearwing moths and peach fruit moths are considered economically important pests of jujube in Boeun, Chungbuk, Korea. However, until now, specific studies on occurrence of the major pests of jujube in Boeun area, which could be useful for pest control, have not been carried out. In this study, seasonal occurrence of three pest moths (Synanthedon bicingulata, S. haitangvora, and Carposina sasakii) in jujube orchards was monitored using sex pheromone traps. Synanthedon bicingulata and S. haitangvora were monitored from 2013 to 2015. Adults of both species were captured from May to October, with two peaks in their occurrence: mid-June and mid-September for S. bicingulata, and mid- to late-June and mid- to late-September for S. haitangvora. However, S. haitangvora occurred in lower numbers than S. bicingulata. Adults of C. sasakii were captured from 2014 to 2016. From May to October, two peaks were observed in their occurrence in mid-June and in late-August to mid-September and the second peak was lower than the first. Thus, the life histories of these pest moths of jujube should be studied in detail for an effective pest control.

Seasonal Occurrence Patterns of Synanthedon tenuis and S. bicingulata (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) in Sweet Persimmon Orchards in the Southern Part of Korea (남부지방 단감원에서 애기유리나방과 복숭아유리나방의 발생소장)

  • Seasonal occurrence patterns of Synanthedon tenuis and S. bicingulata (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) were monitored in sweet (non-astringent) persimmon orchards in the southern part of Korea from 2013 to 2105, using sex pheromone traps of the respective species. The two species occurred twice a year. Peak occurrences of the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ generations of S. tenuis were observed in late May nd mid to late September, respectively, while those of S. bicingulata were in early May to early June and mid to late September, respectively. Pooled catches of S. tenuis during the three years from the three locations showed that the $1^{st}$ generation was 1.9 times larger than the $2^{nd}$ generation. In contrast, pooled catches of S. bicingulata showed that the $2^{nd}$ generation was 1.3 fold larger than as the $1^{st}$ generation. However, it remains unclear whether S. bicingulata damages persimmon tree or not.

  • Clearwing moths (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) are economically important pests of fruit trees, such as apple, peach, and grape in Korea. Larvae feed on the phloem and cambium within tree branches of host plants. In this study, the seasonal fluctuation in male catches of four clearwing moths, Synanthedon haitangvora, S. bicingulata, Nokona regalis, and Glossosphecia romanovi, were monitored with the respective sex pheromone traps in Suwon for three years. In apple orchards, S. haitangvora males were captured from May to October, with two peaks in early June to middle June and late August to early September. Similarly, S. bicingulata males were trapped from May to October, with two peaks in late May and late August to middle September in peach orchards. In vineyards, N. regalis males were captured from late May to middle June with one peak in late May to early June, while G. romanovi males were trapped from early June to late July with one peak in late June to early July.

  • Semiochemicals including pheromone are chemicals used in chemical communication of insect. Semiochemicals have been widely used for population monitoring, mass trapping, and mating disruption of insect pest. In this review article, the current status of pheromone research of major forest insect pest in Korea such as Monochamus alternauts, M. saltuarius, Matsucoccus thunbergianae, Platypus koryoensis, Glyphodes perspectalis, Dioryctria abietella, Lymantria dispar, Synanthedon bicingulata, and Naxa seriaria was introduced, and the results were compared with those reported in other countries. Based on the analysis of current pheromone research of forest insect pests, future studies and development direction was suggested.
