A WIG(Wing-In-Ground effect) craft flies close to the water surface by utilizing a cushion of relatively high pressurized air between its wing and water surface. This implies that when one designs such craft it is important to have lightweight structures with adequate strength to resist external loads with some margins. To investigate this requirement, this paper deals with the structural analysis of the bottom plate of small WIG craft having a design landing weight of 1.2-ton. As building materials for the WIG craft, pre-preg carbon/epoxy composites are considered. The strength information of the bottom plate is obtained using the first-ply-failure analysis in conjunction with a mid-plane symmetric laminated plate theory. As a result, the first-ply-failure location, load and deflection of the bottom plate are obtained. The calculated strength information is compared with the water reaction load for the bottom plate of seaplanes considered when they land on the water surface -the same fluid-structure interaction mechanism as that of WIG craft. In the calculation of seaplane water reaction load information, the rules shown in FAR(Federal Aviation Regulations) Part 25 are used. Through the comparison, the structural integrity of the bottom plate for the WIG craft is checked.

Fiber-reinforced composite materials due to their high specific strength, high stiffness and light weight are becoming increasingly used in many engineering industry, especially in the aerospace, marin and civil, etc. In this paper, the buckling load and mode shapes of composite laminates with elliptical cross-section including transverse shear deformations are analyzed. For solving this problems, a versatile flat shell element has been developed by combining a membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and a plate bending element. Also, an improved shell element has been established by the combined use of the addition of enhanced assumed strain and the substitute shear strain fields. The combined influence of shell geometry and elliptical cross-sectional parameter, fiber angle, and lay-up on the buckling loads of elliptical cylinder is examined. The critical buckling loads and mode shapes analyzed here may serve as a benchmark for future investigations.

Following an internal column failure, adjacent double-span beams above the failed column will play a critical role in the load transfer and internal force redistribution within the remaining structure, and the span-to-depth ratios of double-span beams significantly influence the structural resistance capacity against progressive collapse. Most existing studies have focused on the collapse-resistant performances of single-story symmetric structures, whereas limited published works are available on the collapse resistances of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans. To this end, in this study, numerical models based on shell elements were employed to investigate the structural behavior of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans. The simulation models were validated using the previous experimental results obtained for single- and two-story steel frames, and the load-displacement responses and internal force development of unequal-span three-story steel frames under three cases were comprehensively analyzed. In addition, the specific contributions of the different mechanism resistances of unequal-span, double-span beams of each story were separated quantitatively using the energy equilibrium theory, with an aim to gain a deeper level of understanding of the load-resistance mechanisms in the unequal-span steel frames. The results showed that the axial and flexural mechanism resistances were determined by the span ratio and linear stiffness ratio of double-span beams, respectively.

In case of the conventional DC-AC inverter using two DC-DC converters with unipolar output capacitor voltages, for generating the AC output voltage, the output capacitor voltages of its each DC-DC converter must be higher than the DC input voltage. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single-phase DC-AC inverter using two embedded Z-source converters with bipolar output capacitor voltages. The proposed inverter is composed of two embedded Z-source converters with common DC source and output AC load. The AC output voltage is obtained by the difference of the output capacitor voltages of each converter. Though the output capacitor voltage of converter is relatively low compared to the conventional method, it can be obtained the same AC output voltage. Moreover, by controlling asymmetrically the output capacitor voltage, the AC output voltage of the proposed system is higher than the DC input voltage. To verify the validity of the proposed system, a DSP(TMS320F28335) based single-phase embedded Z-source DC-AC inverter was made and the PSIM simulation was performed under the condition of the DC source 38V. As controlled symmetrically and asymmetrically the output capacitor voltages of each converter, the proposed inverter could produce the AC output voltage with sinusoidal waveform. Particularly, in case of asymmetric control, a higher AC output voltage was obtained. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed system was measured as 95% and 97% respectively in case of symmetric and asymmetric control.
This study has two objectives: (1) to evaluate the degradation characteristics of symmetric unbraced steel frames by using analytical approach, and (2) to suggest equation which can approximately estimate the effect of degradation during the schematic design stage. For the analytical approach, the refined plastic hinge method with an arc length algorithm was adopted. The subject of analysis was one story one-bay, multistory one-bay, and multistory three-bay unbraced steel frames. The main parameters of the analytical approach include the stiffness ratio of column to beam and the axial force ratio. The study led to the following conclusions. The normalized stiffness of degradations is affected by both stiffness ratio of column to beam and the axial load ratio; however, the major influence on degradations is the axial force ratio. The equation, which can approximately estimate the effect of degradation, was suggested together with the research results.
A shear-flexible beam element is presented for the flexural analysis of laminated composite T-beams with arbitrary lay-ups. Based on the first-order shear deformable beam theory, the derived element takes into account warping shear deformation and all coupling coming from material anisotropy. Three different types of beam elements, namely, the two-noded, three-noded, and four-noded beam elements with seven degree-of-freedom per node are developed to solve governing equations. To demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the beam element formulated, numerical results are performed for symmetric and anti-symmetric angle-ply composite T-beams under the uniformly distributed and concentrated load. The effects of fiber angle and shear deformation are investigated for different laminated stacking sequence. The quadratic and cubic elements are shown to be applicable to the flexural analysis of composite T-beams.

This paper presents a quality enhancement of images by using a histogram equalization based on the symmetric logistic function. The histogram equalization is a simple and effective spatial processing method that it enhances the quality by adjusting the brightness of image. The logistic function that is a sigmoidal nonlinear transformation function, is applied to non-linearly enhance the brightness of the image according to its intensity level frequency. We propose a flexible and symmetrical logistic function by only using the intensity with maximum frequency in an histogram and the total number of pixels. The proposed function decreases the computation load of an exponential function in the traditional logistic function. The proposed method has been applied for equalizing 5 images with a different resolution and histogram distribution. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the superior enhancement performances compared with the source images and the traditional global histogram equalization, respectively.
In recent years the development of high modulus, high strength and low density boron and graphite fibers bonded together has brought renewed interestes in structural elements. When a plate with arbitrarily oriented layers and clamped boundary conditions is subjected to uniform loading, it is difficult to analyze and apply, compared with isotropic and orthotropic cases. Therefore the numerical methods, such as finite difference method or finite element method, should be emloyed to analyse such problems. In this study the finite difference technique is used to formulate the bending analysis of symmetric composite laminated skew plates. When this technique is used to solve the problem, it is desirable to reduce the order of the derivatives in order to minimize the number of the pivotal points involved in each equation. The 4th order partial differential equations of laminated skew plates are converted to an equivalent three of 2nd order partial differential equations with three dependant variables.

In the case of a circular shaft, it is expected that asymmetric loads should apply on the surface rather than symmetric loads due to geographical factors and the non-homogeneity of the jointed rock masses. In this study, discontinuous numerical analysis was carried in order to analyze the characteristics of asymmetric load distribution on the wall of the circular shaft due to anisotropy caused by heterogeneity of rock masses affected by the discontinuities like as a Joint. And it was also analyzed that the effect of the mechanical properties varied with the rock mass rating and horizontal stress with depth had influence in the asymmetric load on the wall of the shaft. In the case of considering the effect of the joint as variable, asymmetric load ratio $(R_p)$, which was defined as the ratio of the load subtracted minimum from maximum to minimum, was below 25% in the hard rock. As regarding the variation of the rock mass rating with depth as variable, the value of $R_p$ was below than 25% in the hard rock, and the value between 30% and 40% in the soft rock. On the other hand, the $R_p$ of fractures rock was between $45{\sim}50%$ which value was much higher than that in better rock mass rating.
The objective of this paper is the investigation of the statistical properties of Vickers hardness (HV) of friction welded parts in nickel based super resisting steel, alloy 718 steel. First, we examine the statistical properties on the case of as-welded parts. Several Virkers indentations were made under same nominal conditions. This was repeated for three different applied loads, 100, 200 and 300g with a duration time, 10 second. The arithmetic mean of Vickers hardness in base metal (BM) materials is larger than that of HAZ in all applied loads. The measure of dispersion, that is, the coefficient of variation (COV) for BM and HAZ is decreased by increasing with the applied load. The distribution of Vickers hardness was not found to be symmetric type. The probability distribution of Vickers hardness was well followed Weibull distribution. The shape parameter and the scale parameter (characteristic hardness) are increased by increasing with the applied load, as both BM and HAZ.
